    Great info Mike! DPR will also regrind cams. They also stock reground Engle 90, 100, 110 and 120 clones in three bolt and 4 rivet. And they do the lifters too.

      little secret....I think they get them from performance ha ha. I talked to them they can do just about any grind up to a certain amount. no more than 110 off of a stock core. but if you have an oversized core they can make whatever you want. Great resource.

    John karsey built a more square engine with a freeway flier transmission. He said the front air dam made the best improvement in his mpg testing.

    Karcey followed olds design: a higher toque cam with a heavy rotating crank assembly and a taller transmission. They kept the bigger engine lugging at idle speeds. This lower engine speed lowered the engine and transmission internal friction. The heavy rotating element lowered the requirements for stepping on the gas on the hills.
    Was done for carb. Today’s engine computer controller auto adjusts to compensate which allows them to use a lighter crank assembly

    I have a 57 oval window with a 36hp with the Wolfsburg West Okrasa kit. I'm running a syncro transmission and Auburn radial tires. I drive to try to impeed traffic as little as possible, but it is an old slow bug. I can do 65 but generally do 55-60 on the freeway. I get 17.5 mpg around town. 20 mpg on the freeway. 22.5 is the best I have done. I only have about 3000 mile on the motor. I keep track of every tank of gas.

  • @bunning63
    @bunning63 13 дней назад +2

    I could just about touch 30mpg. Could lose 5mpg on a windy week.
    Agree with your views on the 36hp, it did seem to have slightly better torque. Mine went real well, then the crank broke. Taking it apart, the crank was 20 under. We drove it about 30 plus miles with the broken crank.
    Good times... Not!

      I think they actually ran those to 40 under. I would not do that though ha ha.

    Hi, Mike! Could you make a video in this style for power and efficiency with a bigger motor? Cam specs with crank specs, porting, compressions. Budget builds with higher end builds. Single carbs and dual carbs? I’ve come across a 58’ that I want to drive across the United States. A boy can dream, right? I want to put a 1904 in it. Love the content. Especially these last few uploads. Super helpful, keep cruisin’ ✌️ love from California.

      a long time ago....My buddy built a motor with dual carbs. and the average mileages for going across the US was 32 mpg. I wish I knew the combination. was a 2l engine too. with 3.88. gears. dont know what 4th. probably .89. instead of the .91 some had. Custom built motor and trans. My buddy thinks it was 42mpg but I dont think it was. Definitely was in the 30s. maybe even 36. He had a Rostra cruise control. too. Probably small cam. smaller than a 100. I would try web 86 specs and ad ratio rockers if you need more power.

      @@Mikefngarage sounds good. Did you ever discuss dimension limits for an early bug? 1904/1968 seems about the limit for what I think I can shove in there. No need to go so much bigger. I’m not that insecure. Ha!

    Hey Mike ! with the J.C. Whitney kit motor Rambus went from Southeast side of San Antonio to Baton Rouge on a tank of gas at 60 mph on gasahol ? 468 miles . 34 pict 3 carb !!

    @nathanzamzow 9 дней назад

    Cruising about 60-65, we’ve got a 1776 that gets 27.5 mpg and our 2110 gets about 27 mpg as well. 2176 in a bus fully loaded down with camping stuff among other things gets about 22 mpg

    I made my version based upon karsey 76 x 88.5 ported intake
    Stock flywheel and heavy bottom belt pulley. Experimtal valves and higher power/tourque cam.
    I have a bus house freeway flier with the weddle taller ring and pinion.

      3.88 .77 4th....with a larger engine works great.

    Thanks for the video. I figured with the light weight of these bugs, fuel economy would be a bigger issue for people. You had some good ideas.

    I am building a 69 x 82 40 hp with demolo counterbalanced crank. The tranny i kept the 437 but added the 82 bus 4th. Do you do your own split case builds. I paid a vw tranny guy to build my solid case it was hard to work on the solid case style case. Hope he got it right. Are the split case boxes strong or more for 36 hp size. I have built a few trannys but the vw i chickened out lol

    The 437 in my baja matches up ok i think with the 235 tires in the back. 24 mpg with an 1968cc and a single 44IDF. That milage is with me just driving around without my foot in it. That gives me 19 to 20.5 depending on mountain driving or flat out along the river.

      those tall tires really help out baja engine RPM.

    With computer modeling tech these days it would be awesome if someone had an online engine calculator / sim that you could enter all different combinations and get a readout of the mileage, HP, torque, etc. Anything out there like this now?

  • @VWJawbreaker

    Sorry man, there’s plenty that I disagree with.
    Especially about you can’t get good milage with dual carbs. If the engine is built properly and the carbs are jetted properly, you can get great milage.
    Example:
    My 2054cc with large valve CB heads, fk8 cam, 1.4 rockers, 9.75:1 compression and dual 44 IDF’s. I had no problem cruising at 60-65 and getting 24-26mpg in the bug with stock, non freeway flier trans.

    Mike is a 3.88 what we call the freeway flyer?😮

    • @vayabroder729
      @vayabroder729 13 дней назад

      That’s one way; another widely used way is 4:12 differential with a taller 4th like an 82, but then there’s a noticeable spread between 3rd and 4th.

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage  13 дней назад +1

      Some trans shops call a 3.88. 89 a freeway flier....(they are the best option imo) some do a 4 12 82 as a freeway flier. So you need to know what your paying for. the 388 cost more to do.

    run a cold plug or hoter plug for M.P.G.//small vales build more torque . BIG vales build H.P.
