    Craig Douglas of Shivworks ECQC stuff is amazing when it comes to this. Extremely realistic and down to earth. I train his stuff a lot with firearms and edged weapons as well as carry one of his Clinch Picks. Also using a thumb pectoral index with your firearm will minimize almost all self inflicted wounds when deploying your firearm in a grapple because it keeps the firearm high and angles it down.

    First; amazing video and very much appreciated. Second, I think I remember Mike being a former LE and that just might be affecting his training here. As an outsider, looking at this scenario, what we have is two men fighting, when one suddenly escalates the situation by using lethal force. Maybe lethal force justification is assumed here. And I am certainly not a lawyer. but using a weapon as a LE officer might be justified; not so sure if it was two civilians in a street fight. This is not a criticism, just an observation, and a legitimate question. Thanks again for the information.

    • @hard2hurt
      @hard2hurt  3 года назад +9

      Yeah the justification is a separate issue. There are a bunch of variables, and it's true they are different for LE or non-LE. I probably should have at least given a little lip service to the "assuming we are justified in lethal force" idea.

    8:05 this is a good point, a lot of people think having the headlock means youre winning but if you watch a lot of footage of real fights you see that the person in the headlock almost always dumps the other guy on the ground and wrecks him
    If someone tries to headlock you like that (and you have your closest leg behind theirs) then you are actually the one in the superior position

  • @theheretic3764
    @theheretic3764 3 года назад

    Yesssssss.
    Far too many people have no idea how important knowing when to transition to your weapon and when not to is...
    To use wrestling in a “punny” way... sometimes you can just shoot right off the bat. Sometimes you have to strike a little first and then shoot. You have to know when your opponent has stifled your attempt to shoot... and how to not get so committed to shooting or in a bad situation as a result of being determined to shoot that you get knocked out or choked out...
    It is like any other technique in your arsenal. Sometimes you have to recognize when it’s the wrong time to go for it. Went to abandon it after you’ve gone for it. And how to set it up.
    This can be predicated on your environment how much for them to move you have and so on.

    This is an EXTREMELY important concept, I am usually armed, but started taking a martial art "to survive until I can get to the gun" unfortunately the one that I chose was Kung Fu (a local school that's very good for Kung Fu, but absolute trash at something like self-defense or grappling in a real world sense, none of the 'self-defense' classes had any resistance at all, it was always full compliance.) The problem that a weapon poses both for the attacker and victim is something that you alluded to @5:15, and Bas Rutten specifically stated, you said "we're fighting, it's a fight" as in it's not going to always go as planned so learn to think. Bas Rutten put it more directly but I can't remember the exact wording so paraphrasing 'if you choose to fight, you have to be ready for the reality that sometimes you will lose.' I think it's important to think before going for the weapon, once you escalate your threat to that level you can expect your attacker to fight harder and pull tricks just as you are attempting to. So I think it would be best to attempt to make your attacker relax a bit before going for the weapon rather than attempting to get to it while they're in full attack mode.

      Shuai Jiao is real shit, and I've competed against it (I'm a wrestler& judoka) but you got to admit calling it or sanda "kung fu" is a huge stretch. Y'all compete, have open sparring, do resisted training and everything else 90% of kung fu schools _don't_do.
      Y'all are Chinese -wrestlers- much more than Kung Fu practitioners.
      Still. It's cool stuff.

    Now I don’t carry or anything, looking to start here soon so videos like yours are really helpful for a fella like me yeah lol. This may sound stupid, but I’ve heard people say they don’t keep their gun loaded when carrying. You might not have time to load the gun in a scramble, so shouldn’t it already be loaded? The second you leave ya house. Might be something good to bring up in future videos to for those that don’t

    I really like the approach and I've found it really important to know when and where the draw takes place as well as to be able to defend the attack first until there's space and opportunity for a change. My only comment on the shooting your own arm thing is this - sure, in the actual situation, it's not going to hold high priority. But the benefit of training is that you can make those things a priority during that exercise. If you can work out effective ways that greatly mitigate the threat of you shooting your own arm... then train those. Why wouldn't you? I just don't think it's making best use of the training if you're dismissing or ignoring that as a factor from the get go. With that said I'm sure you don't train in a way that completely disregards it as a factor.

    Smart stuff. We always say that we don't want a gunfight to be a draw. When you're wrestling for a gun you don't even know if it's going to be a draw yet. Go for the gun and try to get a good shot on center mass and a head--Even if your arm is in the background.

    This is very much an armchair perspective, since I've never practised this, but I think there's a middle ground to be found re. shooting your own arm. I think it's a valid concern, since the point of practising self-defence is to get hurt as little as possible, but it's also one that's very easily addressed, because it's the kind of thing that you should notice in training. If you're seriously practising using a handgun in close quarters, it seems to me that the spatial awareness to know that you're not gonna poke holes in your forearm should be reasonably simple, though probably not easy, to develop. It's not the same, but my HEMA club teaches a single-handed sword system that uses a lot of grappling, and it's really not too difficult to learn not to take your free hand off with the sword.

    Some guys think a gun trumps everything. I can see using a gun for home defense but even then you have to think about line if fire, if you shoot and miss what wall will it go through, is it your kids bedroom or a guest room, if you shoot into your kitchen and miss could it go out a window and hit your neighbors house? I live in a small ranch style home with bedrooms on both sides of the house. It would be dangerous to use a firearm and risk hitting my sons room or my guest room. People don’t think about these things. Also if you conceal carry, on the street you can’t pull a gun unless it’s warranted, ie someone pulls a gun on you or a knife etc. but what if someone pulls a gun on you, are you going to reach for your weapon? If you do chances are you will be shot. People also say if someone pulls a knife, then shoot him, well if you have never seen a knife attack go down you may think this works, well it won’t. Knife attacks are very fast and the attacker often times is not threatening and gets close enough to you before pulling a knife. It happens so fast you won’t see it and by the time you get your gun out of the holster, you will be stabbed 5 times. People do not realize these things. A gun is not the answer to all things. I’m all for having a gun for protection but people need to use their heads. There are very few circumstances where you can use a firearm and not end up in prison.

  • @cyruskhalvati
    @cyruskhalvati 3 года назад

    I always noticed how people jerk when they are about to pull out a weapon, and have learned to pull the knife slowly and calmly. Working my hand down to my thigh. If you have a belt knife, even better because you can easily fake a takedown and reach for your knife when you shift your weight back again.
    Though again if you cant even resist the takedown and just get slammed into concrete theres a good chance your already dead.

Long story short he has a much deeper respect for learning hand to hand combat for personal protection in addition to concealed carry. Guns can be a great tool for self protection but like all other tools its useless if you dont train to use it. Nice vid.

    IMO, if you can get a front headlock, keep the front headlock. Look at the '84 Olympics at the Schultz brothers. They used to use that move to separate the guy's head from his shoulders and choke him out so much that they had to add an extra ref just to watch for it.

    I've always called this "Creating a Pause Point" Learning how to access and deploy your weapon is one of the most under trained part of weapons training. Think of it this way, if you're in a fight where you cannot access your weapon; then you are unarmed. If I've got an overhook, I like a couple of hard whizzers. If I've got the underhook, I wrapped my arm up and around the shoulder and cross face them away.
    BTS... The text to speech first came up with, "I like a couple of hard wizards."
