Note; so the PTO clutch doesn't *have* to be removed, but I removed it and added Permatex nickel antiseize so if it ever needs to come off again, it'll slide right off. Also, this machine supposedly has 2 different drive belts, so this video may not help you if you have a the different model.
I just inherited a Z225 that needed a drive belt, and your video was very helpful in changing it . Thanks for your help with this.
Same!
So......My drive belt broke, and I searched the topic. Your video was the first I watched, and I dont need to watch any others. Very clear instructions, well done. Thank you for sharing this. I will definitely be subscribing and watching more of your content.
Thanks for watching David, I enjoy making these step by step tutorials.
They may not get as many views as other videos, but they definitely help out when someone is looking for that exact video!
Eliminator Performance Well it easy to see you enjoy this. When guys like me look for a video like you make we are looking for content that is clear and concise. No frills because we are genuinely looking for instruction because we have work that needs to be done. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the no frills instruction you give. Best site like this I have found yet. Thanks again for doing these.
Outstanding video presentation. I have seen a lot of very confusing instructions on the web - this tutorial is clear, concise,, and spot on! Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Very clear explanation, good job!, and thank you!
Excellent "how to" video. I have a new 2020 Z335e. Everything still looks the same. I book marked this for future reference. Thank you very much!
Was it the same
Thanks bro
Appreciate your time and effort 👍
This video helped a lot. Thank you!
Man that was one of the best tutorial videos ever. I was able to follow you clearly. Thank you and great job!
Thanks for another great, informative video!!!
Thanks Bruce!
Outstanding replacement!
Easy job now thanks to this video. Very clear on how to do it.
Thanks for watching!
great job and view, thanks so much
Good day Boy some of those belts are really packed in there. Good video, & Happy Canada day. Thanks
Thanks Don!
Good job, as always! Thank you Jake for your videos, they are precious references!
Thanks for watching!
Amazing info for my John deer z turn thank you
Thanks for watching!
Excellent video, good job 👏
Thank you very much 😏👍
Thanks for watching!
My spring broke on the tensioner, would this be same on a Z345M model? Thank you
Thanks, very nice video.
Thanks so much, great info.
Great video overall. Personally love how you point out that using anti-seize in the threads will change the torque specs and then proceeded to use an impact :-)
Tight is tight!
That was awesome. Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Very good job.
How do u keep the crank shaft from spinning?
it appears that your video is the only one i found closest to the 345m which is what i have thanks a lot.
Don't understand why anybody would give you a thumbs down great job thank you
Robert, simple. Those that can, do, those that can't criticize
Thank You’ll
Annually I remove my deck for cleaning, change oil etc. During this time I check the drive belt. One thing I can suggest that makes this job a breeze is to drain the oil, remove the battery, and then stand the mower on the rear bumper. Everything is much easier to see and reach! Just remember to remove the rear hitch first if you have one.
There are two belts depending on the vintage of a 245, mine takes the 107.244 length belt, not sure if the installation will be the same. Looking for a video for my Z245.
I guess it all depends on the serial code, thanks for watching!
Good information to have learned today thank you
Thanks for watching!
Thanks. Do you have anything on changing out the hydraulic fluid on JD Z445. Mine is contaminated and needs changed.
No sorry I do not!
Is z,355e is the same as 245e
I can’t get the pto clutch to break loose
What else should we consider if drive belt does not need replaced. Zero turn will only turn to the right. I was cutting then all of a sudden left handle will operate but mower will not turn to left side. Appreciate your insight
I would start with a transmission oil change!
What’s the part number for this belt
What does the drive belt do on a zero turn? I got a z255 that won't go left like the whole wheel locked up. Meanwhile the right side worked fine. It makes like a straining noise when you go left. Trying to figure out what is.
I obtained a used Z245 that was stored in a shed for a few years. I got it working again and replaced the MOWER DRIVE BELT, spark plugs, engine oil and filters (oil, fuel, air). I did not replace the DRIVE BELT because it looked to be in OK condition, it was hard to get to (AND I did not see this video at the time). After mowing for 3 weeks, it developed the same symptoms you described. In my case, it was an extremely worn DRIVE BELT and it resulted in collateral damage to the idler pulley, i.e. wobbling due to over-stretched belt caused the top section of the plastic idler pulley to rub against the frame. Both the worn belt and idler pulley had to be replaced. I followed the excellent video by Eliminator Performance, replaced both items and now my Z245 works great. If the drive belt is not in good condition, there is not enough tension from the idler pulley to drive the left hydrostatic transmission. The right-side is not affected as much. This is my first zero turn mower. The two transmissions make it more susceptible to worn drive belts. In the future, I will replace the belt more frequently using the Kevlar belt recommended by Eliminator Performance, which is 1/2 the price of the John Deere OEM drive belt.
Is this same for a 717a
I realize this is an old post, just wondering if you put a washer between the idler pulley lever and the body if that would keep the arm from rubbing against the body?
You could, I would use something like a Teflon Washer vs metal but it would work

Sir, thank you for your response. It's greatly appreciated. Have a wonderful week sir
How much should I pay for this service? / since it's way over my abilities and lack of tools that would make this possible/
Question: why did you drop the PTO if the belt went on the outside of the post? seems like the only thing in the way was the wire.
I think he said, so viewers could see more clearly.
I have a JD z425 with a 48 inch deck, but my drive belt is like 111 or 112 inches long. So that belt does not fit all JD Z425s.
Yes from reading the comments it appears there are 2 different designs of Z245, it's possible a different year uses a different belt
I did everything just like you and still have slack at the back and idk where i went wrong and it is the right size belt and everything. Is there away to adjust the tensioner?
Only the spring adjusts the tension, and should automatically adjust it.
@@EliminatorPerformance Oh okay well I don't know where I went wrong. I am left with that little bit of slack in the back that you showed towards the end of the video. It's driving me insane because I know it is simple. I also tried to start the mower out of curiosity and tried to move with that extra slack but it still didn't move. Any ideas what I did wrong? I also was wondering if it could be a bad tensiom spring although it looks good. By the way you did a great job man!
@@fftl1827 I have no idea man, sorry, it's hard for me to diagnose stuff without seeing it in person. And if I give the wrong info, you'd be wasting your time. If the transmissions aren't in freewheel, then it's hard to say why it wouldn't drive. The belt should always have tension on it. Read some other comments, I heard these machines have 2 different belts for the drive, as 1 model was designed slightly different for some unknown reason.
@@EliminatorPerformance So I just realized my idler arm is on the opposite side of where yours is. So instead of pulling to your right (top view) like yours is mine pulls all the way to the left. Is there a way to adjust that idler tension arm. Do they break ever also your model is the same as mine and I know the 2 belt situation. But yeah sorry for bothering you I was just curious about the tension idler arm and if it has to be set in a specific position.
@@fftl1827 I have no idea, you should pull up an illustrated parts diagram using your model number on Google and find some photos.
Could not be done any better
You don't have to remove the clutch. Just unplug the wiring harness for the clutch. The drive belt goes on the outside of the stabilizer rod.
I was thinking the same thing
I just replaced mine and realized I never took it apart and ran it outside the stabilizer rod and got worried I did it wrong. Glad someone commented and eased me worry. Thanks!
Yes you don't *have* to remove it, but I did and added some nickel antiseize so at least it'll be easy to remove if it ever needs to come off again.
Im trying to remove my bolt and it spins when i go to remove it. How do i prevent this?
Get someone to hold the flywheel on the top side of the engine!
hello mr. matt
You didn't show the hardest part, getting the idler spring hooked.
That was easy! Pair of pliers and just pull it to the outside. Thanks for watching!
fyi... i dont think this video applies to EVERY z245, it appears there is another variation which uses 5 pulleys plus idler. looking at the john deere online parts they list the other config as follows: Pulleys And Drive Belt (100001 - ) - ST551816. which calls out a MUCH longer belt
Correct, so you need to run the serial number after the model number and you should be able to pull up the proper parts and diagrams for your specific machine!
Great video
You just saved me 200 bucks !!
If you're ever im ohio, look me up.
I'll get the first 10 rounds
Haha
Cheers!
1:18 I take it ur Canadian A
Never use a impact wrench to tighten the clutch to the drive shaft. Only use a torque wrench. You will prematurely wear out the clutch bearing
Where's the link to your video?
That's the deck belt, not the drive belt.
nope
