- Political power may grow out of the barrel of a gun but it is an idea that compels someone to pull the trigger, to raise an army, to start a war.
In an essay for The Australian's 60th anniversary, Chris Uhlmann discusses how the balance of power has seen it's most dramatic shift in human history, propelled entirely by ideas.
He writes, "Australia is an idea. It’s a good idea. The future is what we make it, good or bad. Like many democratic societies we are fracturing because we seem incapable of defining a common purpose."

So well said. Australia at risk
There is no force for change more powerful than an idea. I discovered this quite some time ago now, after viewing an exhibition at the NLA. It contained Einstein's first written expression of the relationship between energy and mass. There were 99 other exhibits including an excerpt from Cooks log and Mathew Flinders' log of his circumnavigation of Australia. Stunning stuff that changed my view of the chimera that is reality.
I came away with the notion that the purpose of life is the formation of ideas. But then reality is what you believe it is.
Right now we live in a tower of babel accosted by a blizzard of ideas.

We are starting to follow the American trend, but let us hope Australia eventually sees the folly of that.Trump is the most divisive human being on earth, yet he has many followers in Sky News so called "Commentators". Chris can bring a change to that and may be admit that every Labor policy is not an idea from hell.

We can never have certainty and that is the defining characteristic of possibility.
We DO give up certainty when we consider endless non granulated possibility.
