    In this video, we explore the recent volcanic eruption near Grindavík, Iceland, that has dramatically impacted the town. This event is the fifth eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula in two years and the second in a short span, leading to fires in residential areas. We discuss the opening of two new fissures following increased seismic activity, prompting evacuations. We also cover the residents' reactions to the surreal and distressing scenes of their town engulfed in lava and smoke. The video includes insights into the national response, with President Guðni Jóhannesson addressing the nation and the Icelandic Meteorological Office commenting on the volcano's unpredictability. The heightened alert level by the civil protection agency and concerns over the nearby geothermal plant are highlighted. Additionally, we touch on the challenges faced by the local livestock and the suspension of a search for a missing individual. The video concludes by contrasting the current eruptions with the disruptive 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption, emphasizing the unique geological position of Iceland. Join us as we delve into this significant natural event and its implications for the people of Grindavík and beyond.

    That’s not a way anyone would choose to end… falling into a volcanic fissure. We are so lucky we live on a geologically stable continent.

      Agreed, it's a terrifying way to go...

      If you're talking about the US, there earthquakes been happening in Texas, Oklahoma and Yellowstond Park. The Geyser system is showing signs of potential volcanic eruption. California Andreas fault is building up some kind of activity. Not too stable, it seems.

      @@sharonwells9593 No. I’m talking about Australia. As I said, “Continent”. The “U.S.” is not a continent.

      The only active volcanoes on the Australian tectonics plate are located 4000 kilometres off the coast of Australia, in the Australian Antarctic Territory: Heard Island and the nearby McDonald Islands.
      The last eruptions in Australia were around 5000 years ago at Mount Schank and Mount Gambier, and those volcanoes are no longer active.

    Do fissure eruptions happen anywhere else in the world?

    • @OzGeologyOfficial
      @OzGeologyOfficial  8 месяцев назад +1

      They sure do. They occur in places where basaltic eruptions are common like Hawaii.

    Wait wait wait, someone fell?? Into an open fissure??? Was it intentional or accidental?????? Is that even a known recorded case of someone falling in or just something recent
