This seems to be a long legal hit by NHL standards, but really unnecessary. The idea of finishing checks when the puck is gone has always bothered me. This one is a pretty tight time frame, puck was not long gone, but every game has a ton of what I consider late hits that they should take out of the game. Let’s hope everyone remains heathy this season as Iove the game.
You see this sort of play all the time where the opponent brings the knee in behind on hits. Its partly for balance and partly to ensure the hit puts the player down. It’s kind of amazing we don’t see concussions more often from that sort of thing. Going over backwards like that makes you pretty defenceless, and being a big tall guy makes it worse.
This is the right take. I've previously commented here that this was a slew foot, but my earlier comment wasn't quite right... It's similar to a slew foot. Something needs to be done to get rid of using a leg to take a player down like that on a hit. Not sure *how* honestly, since it's hard to see in real time, but it's just far too dangerous to not do anything. This time it was a concussion, but the next time it might be a broken neck that paralyzes someone.
@@dooodooo3474 it's the fact that he used his leg to take Branny's legs out from under him. That is what makes slew footing so dangerous and the same thing happened here. Lots of slew foots don't involve contact with the actual skate (watch any slew footing compilation). The key difference here is that the initial primary contact was the hit on the upper body and the contact from the leg came after the initial contact.
Frankly these hits need to be removed from the game. Players have all this gear on and they feel they can just hit people as hard as they can. They are wearing knives on their feet that we have seen kill other players.

@@tomaszgrzesik3916 Why not just hit shoulder to shoulder instead of doing this push with hands from the front and sweep with legs from behind. Clearly just intended for the player to fall hard. The league should look into that and make some rule changes.
@@callmesceptical9114 Absolutely. Decades of experience one the ice, in the stands and on the sofa. Your guesswork is on par. Broke someone's collarbone on a clean hit when they were trying to carry the puck up ice at their own blue line. I've also been hit cleanly behind my own net out of the blue by a checker. Didn't break anything but I did suffer a minor shoulder injury. Our goalie managed to give me a heads up a split second before impact, so I manged to at least partially brace myself from the incoming train that I did not see coming. Not gonna say it’s dirty but I’ve played hockey my whole life and clutterbuck knew exactly what he was doing. He tried dumping him after the hit, just not on his head.
Unfortunate on a routine play. Bizarre how it happens. Happened to me, separated my shoulder. Absolutely nothing out of the ordinary on the hit, the same as every other..

@@davrion I'm not saying Clutterbuck is dirty or anything like that. I don't recall him ever being suspended for anything. All I'm saying is the puck was well away when contact was made. Sucks a great career in the NHL might be over for it.
@PowerSysPsyOps what was the frame count, since that's how they measure "late"? You have a window of time to finish your check where it is NOT considered late

Hit wasn't too late imo, but it was an absolutely textbook slew foot. Didn't look intentionally dirty or malicious, but there's no question that back leg is what caused him to flip.
@@MrTedMcForehead that proves my point. with his experience he obviously knows beforehand how someone is going to fall, so if he trips them and also traps their hand so the only way they can fall is backwards without the possibility of bracing that fall, what does that tell you? I hope he ´s okay 😰❤
Wondering if he had a seizure….Looked like it. Terrible to see. And clutterbuck is a tough but fair player.
I think he did. I saw him shaking violently and uncontrollably for a few seconds.
Looks like a fencing response to a concussion.
Very common with a brain injury. I had seizures when I had a brain injury. Hope he doesn’t rush getting back on the ice.
That was a hard watch Hope he has a fast recovery
@@andrewclarke8163how is it similar to a slew foot? Clutterbucks skate didn’t even touch Branny’s.
Normal hockey body check and Branmstrom goes down..? Ah well, at least he got himself a standard hockey wag.
prayer for bran
The news is saying he died from a skate to his neck when after watching it appears he hit his head on the ice damn never want to see this rip 🙏
That was for a player in the EIHL Adam Johnson. He played for the Nottingham Panthers which is the team I support here in the UK.
Hope he gets well quick.
Difficult to grasp that not to long ago it was considered weak to play with a helmet.
I mean if 40+ years is “not to long ago” then I guess yes
@@Max_m how old is hockey?
I was at the match! I see it
Frankly these hits need to be removed from the game. Players have all this gear on and they feel they can just hit people as hard as they can. They are wearing knives on their feet that we have seen kill other players.
Seizures are a bane. I had 4 in a row 2 weeks ago. Fell into the wall and got a concussion. Spent 3 days in the hospital. I feel for him.
He kinda got slew-footed on that. Very unfortunate. I wish him a speedy and full recovery.
Not to mention the charge. The guy took 5-6 strides directly in to the check. Then used his knee to slew foot him.
@@BigHouse907no he didn't use his knee, his knee was there if he used his knee there would way more movement with it.
Show podkolzin injury yesterday
Clean hit. The difference in strength led to the awkward fall.
Yup, this guy is an authority on “clean hits” I’m guessing cumbent has dished out and taken the best from men of different “strengths”…
I don’t know for me it’s a clean but way late.
what is your highest level of hockey played, and provide proof if its a relatively high level. until you do this, you are a house league player (which you 99% most likely are) and therefore have absolutely zero clue as to what you are talking about. youre less of an authority than anything. the hit was a common, clean hit. stop talking, stop watching the sport.@@callmesceptical9114
You learn something new every day.
Not gonna say it’s dirty but I’ve played hockey my whole life and clutterbuck knew exactly what he was doing. He tried dumping him after the hit, just not on his head.
Exactly. He literally trips him and you can very clearly tell on the way he moves that it's all done with maximum malicious intent.
repeating it time and time again doesn't make it a dirty hit. It was an accident and just momentum. Get over it Esmerelda@@miranda92051
Hopefully he's ok....unfortunate freak accident. I hate the islanders, but it was a clean hit.
Slew foot
@@YeYe-db6urnot a slew foot
@@YeYe-db6ur apparently you know nothing about hockey

The silence in the building speaks volumes. Seeing something like that changes you
Landing on ice is definitely comfortable… said no one ever
Unfortunate on a routine play. Bizarre how it happens. Happened to me, separated my shoulder. Absolutely nothing out of the ordinary on the hit, the same as every other..
U can see clutterbuck lift his left leg and basically slew foots him
@@johnnyversaci7091 Its a clean hit , clearly you never played hockey.
@@jakecarroll5 yea lifting your leg and tripping the opponent is squeaky clean
As an ex roller hockey player, just playing on wooden boards, but with the same kit as ice hockey players, body armour and same helmets, I can tell you I have fallen heavily, just like that, landing on my back and head, and it is jolting to say the least. I remember clearly seeing stars , and could'nt play again for months! Smacking your head on ice is another story, no give in it at all! Hope he recovers soon!
😞😒🙏🤝
Hockey, American football is so dangerous games!!!
Clean hit, hopefully he’s ok
Lmfao sure it was. A wee bit late and the road him into the boards.
@@heathclark318 a a bit late and into the boards? That’s a hit
Slew-foot action. We've seen it many times before when someone does the little extra to control someone at the boards, they often fall without them being able to brace themselves because of it.
Yep, Sens fan -clean hit but it fucking sucks.
No call, so therefore: "Clean". lmao what a dipshit who thinks this way
Definity a late hit. He watched the puck come off the stick. Hope he recovers OK.
Didn't look that late to me. If it was late (measured by frame count), it was marginally so. Not "definitely"....
@@davrion I'm not saying Clutterbuck is dirty or anything like that. I don't recall him ever being suspended for anything. All I'm saying is the puck was well away when contact was made. Both players could have done better there. Clutterbuck was late, and the young Brannstrom needed to keep his head up and do a hockey stop to avoid a hit. Sucks a great career in the NHL might be over for it.
@PowerSysPsyOps what was the frame count, since that's how they measure "late"? You have a window of time to finish your check where it is NOT considered late
Man, I hate to see that. Glad he was okay after this. Blessings.
The puck is long gone. I'm so tired of these hits where they lift the opponent up and into the glass. Stop doing this shit. It's so fucking dangerous.
Those are my favorite hits but indeed its dangerous
Such a statement merely proves that you know nothing about hockey as the location of the puck is completely irrelevant.
There have been goals scored prior to clean hits, nothing strange about it.
I suggest you start watching football instead, your kind of sport full of gamesmanship. Leave hockey to people that actually know the game.
trust me when i say, we are much more tired of house league gen z fans like yourself whining about physicality in the sport. the game is a shell of what it once was, viewership reflects this, and it's almost entirely on you.
@@MrTedMcForehead I’ve played hockey longer than you’ve been alive, you brain dead internet troll. I’m fine with physicality but there’s zero reason to lift a player up on the boards and slam them on their head. It happened with Elias Petterson as well. Stop talking about the game being a “shell” of its former self. The league has developed into a much more skill based game. You wouldn’t know that though because you’re a fat casual that’s ever touched the ice
@@incumbentvinyl9291 oh look. Another internet troll that doesn’t understand the basic rules of interference in a sport they’ve never played. Guaranteed you are a 400 pound hillbilly that started watching hockey after discovering Shoresy on Hulu one night after you engorged yourself with Oreos and Cheetos
Legal hit. 15 blue lifted his left leg under a bit. White never saw him coming. Hope for a good recovery. Crazy landing definitely rung his bell
Prayers to EB and family.
Anybody else think it was a late hit ? The puck was way gone
It happened to Vasily podkulzin when he got hit to board with a body slam and then he hit his head on the ice during a AHL hockey game
How is that a clean hit? He didn't have the puck and you can see the islander pushing him into the boards 1:32.
go play soccer you twat
Plus look at Clitterbucks back leg. Is there contact with Branstrom’s legs?
ya there's a bit of a slew foot there for sure. @@CommonClowns
This is how you can tell who the real hockey fans are. It was 100% a clean hit. He had the puck when Clutterbuck went at him. You are legally allowed to finish your check even if the player releases the puck. Secondly it wasn't a slew foot at all. He was coming at him from the side and bracing for impact. There was absolutely nothing dirty or malicious about this play. Just like when you lay a great hip check on someone it can send them flying, that's all this is. Definitely unfortunate, but one of the many risks of being a professional hockey player. Hope he makes a full recovery.
@@RoughRaiders13 dude clutterbuck loaded up for the hit 2 seconds after the puck was gone... you're allowed to finish your check. He hadn't fucking started his check. Are you blind?
Awkward, dangerous landing, on the back and head. These players deserve every penny they get, hoping for a full recovery
I looked at this closely and it definitely looks like Cal is a psychopath. The way he intentionally lifts his knee and pushes it under Erik's legs to trip him while simultaneously trapping the arm that would help him break the fall speaks of a high degree of malicious and psychopathic intent. That man should never play hockey again. I'd gladly watch him serve a long sentence for this behavior.
you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.
Watch soccer. Or the NBA. You’d enjoy that. Clean. Grapes for PM. Keep your head up.
Late hit, there needs to be a suspension. This is the type of hit we don't need in the NHL for obvious reasons. 8 game suspension or more people will get hurt.
There won't be a suspension
Hitting is part of the game so injuries are too
Wasn't a dirty hit. A freak accident. People forget how hard the ice is. There's certainly no give.
that was pretty late after he dumped the puck
less than a second after he release the puck, with zero spacial awareness at all. theres no excuse for not preparing yourself for a hit there@@Sshooter444
Freak accident…sure. It was a simple puck dump and he was pasted several strides after release.
I am not a Don Cherry person, but I did like him describing Cal as "ButterCup" when he fought with his visor on.
Ever since, Ive called Clutterbuck, ButterCup.
Are we going to pretend Clutterbuck didn't intentionally bring his leg to the board to sweep Brannstroms legs out from under him?
Clear as day slewfoot.
I watched this is .25 speed, no slewfoot but still a very late hit
@@lightningfan My dude, clean your glasses 1:41
@@Pottan23 still no slewfoot
No slew foot here, he widened his legs to brace for making the hit and just happened to get his leg around him, he didnt purposely slew foot him, not even a bad hit, just an unlucky result
Interesting, how a perpetrator allways skates away as if nothing happened and as if he has absolutely nothing to do with it
Hit wasn't too late imo, but it was an absolutely textbook slew foot.
Didn't look intentionally dirty or malicious, but there's no question that back leg is what caused him to flip.
Sens fan? No slew foot at all.
he basically shoved him and then tripped him and forced a backward fall. what kind of psycho does that to another player?
tell me you never played a sport competitively without telling me... as im writing this i realize you name is miranda.. go figure@@miranda92051
That's a slew job all day
@@MrTedMcForehead that proves my point. with his experience he obviously knows beforehand how someone is going to fall, so if he trips them and also traps their hand so the only way they can fall is backwards without the possibility of bracing that fall, what does that tell you? Obvious malicious intent is what I see here. Clear as day. You don't "accidentally" make another player go airborne AND trip them AND trap their hand and make them fall like that. He's clearly a psycho who who should be out of the sport asap!
**** man that's hard to watch, everything fine one second the next you're on a stretcher, I hope he recovers fully
Hoping for a speedy recovery. Sending healing 🙏 Pls pls I'm begging the NHL to put on or help organize free camps to show kids in minor hockey how to take a hit and give a hit to try to prevent freak accidents like this!!! For the love of the game.🏒
His own fault. Nothing play. Branstrom had plenty of time to prepare for the mellow hit. He decided to watch his own dump in instead.
its incredible how he didnt even attempt to protect himself or brace in any way
Clean hit not even too hard guy just looked like he fell really hard on that shoulder neck area glad to hear he is doing ok. It's always scary! When sime just gets hit wrong or falls wrong especially in a sport as fast and hard as hockey.
His leg hit Brannstroms legs taking them out. Otherwise the hit would have been perfect. But Brannstrom had no chance of protecting himself.
Honestly think it is very questionable how much contact you should be able to make with one’s leg with plays like these
Looked like a malicious and intentional trip to me. He forced him to fall defenselessly backwards and hit his head on the ice
That's his career ending hit
clutterbuck never passed up a borderline or late hit for his entire miserable career
It was completely clean.
you're a sissy fan
Remember when Don Cherry called him buttercup.
1000+ NHL games, $40,000,000 in earnings and the record for the most recorded hits in NHL history is a miserable hockey career?
jesperi kotkaniemi while a habs got hit exactly the same way. going down body twisting, fells on back of neck-head-top of shoulders than head spans in a odd way.
the back was the last thing hitting the ice. back of neck took everything. that is brain contusion and twitching like a bacon. I also was hit like that when younger and the kid was smaller but I dont remember shit and have not got up to 100? ever...
