Hello mr. I have a Macbookpro A1708. Some days it shows blinking folder icon, some days it starts. To me it seems like a loose connection or something, since the problems comes and goes. What are your thoughts? Best regards

Most likely, the hard drive is failing. Back up your data asap!

Great video I'm dealing with the same problem! I have a 2017 Macbook Pro 13in Non Touchbar 2 thunderbolt port 128gb A1708 that I bought in October of 2017. I tried to see if I was eligible for that service progam and I was denied on the website and at the Apple Store! I asked them why I didn't qualify and they said that they did not know. Later they told me that the service program only gave free service to update the firmware on the ssd and not on replacement or repair coverage. They were going to charge $400 to replace the 128 ssd, I said no and bought a replacement off ebay that is 1TB for $200. I am so pissed that I found out that you could replace the ssd on this model because I always thought it was soldered on. I would of replaced it years ago for a 1tb.
Now its interesting that you can see the ssd on your clients laptop, because mine does not appear at all on disk utility, no internal drive shows on the device only the Apple disk image media drive of 2gb. At Apple they updated the ssd firmware and ran diagnostic tests and they reported that my ssd was working perfectly normal, but it did not appear on disk utility at all. They started my laptop in targeted disk mode (a mode where you can use the laptop as a hard drive on another computer) and nothing showed up. It was a weird phenomenon. They had my laptop for 4 days because they were going to talk to engineers at headquarters to see what the problem was and if they could fix it without having to replace the drive. Ultimately the last decision was to replace the drive. I am pissed that a problem that apple's software created is something that I have to pay for.
Now I am just waiting for my replacement ssd to come in the mail and I can give an update after installation if anyone is interested.

Same here, the interval SSD shows on disk utility occasionally. So is it in terminal. It works after i replaced a new SSD.

Same problem here. I would oftentimes do multiple restart and until login becomes successful (meaning ssd was read). But recently the ssd couldn’t be read and the question mark folder pops up every log in. Would also appreciate a follow-up from your case?

    • @lapfix

The late 2016/2017 a1708 models do. But it is a special apple ssd like the one we showed in the video. I highly wouldn't recommend replacing it with a 3rd party ssd as you may encounter more issues down the road

It can be, yes. Especially if it is a 2017 a1708 model. Also check if you can go through their warranty program as there is for select serial numbers

I wonder what keeps people buying stuff from a company that fleeces them right at the first step when they buy a machine that is priced more than double of what the same configuration would cost from a different brand, tells them to choose the ram and ssd capacity as it cannot be changed later, because the sobs soldered the ram as well as the ssd to the main mainboard thus they can give you a higher capacity drive and ram at purchase not after that.
This means the service life of the machine has been restricted even though the machine could have lasted 2 times of what it's current life is if you had a standard laptop where you could add more ram and increased the ssd capacity.
A company making huge profits can surely make concessions for loyal customers, for example if your hard drive or ram is shot and it is a soldered type drive and ram, they could replace the whole board but charge you only the price of the ssd or the ram instead of the whole board because they can very well change the ssd or ram at their end and sell the board again.
But why should they when there are so many people who will keep telling themselves and others that apple is the best even after being rogered by them and apple will make tons of money by selling you overpriced systems.

So the issue is with the SSD drive, and not the firmare? Or is it more complicated, i.e. some combination of both?
