The guy introducing them is named Tony Wilson. He was a TV personality who was one of the first people to put punk rock on TV in northern England (or anywhere, for that matter). There's a movie about him called 24 Hour Party People.
This is one of most influential bands which started all post punk and gothic rock movement. Legend. Check transmission live and she's lost control live from the same time, you feel their raw post punk energy and sinister atmosphere
Joy Division. A wonderful post-punk, Goth, darkwave band. Very influential band. For future alt rock, goth rock, dakrwave, and post-punk bands. Who later on became New Order after the death of Ian. Check out "Transmission" next .

Salford - very important difference 😄 Tony went to De La Salle, Weaste Lane, Salford, as did I, though it was a 6th form by the time I went. Amazing to see reactions to stuff like this. What the internet was made for 😎
This is great hearing the the live Granada TV version of this song. I hadn't heard this version before. This studio version is much more polished as you heard. The first album they used digital drum rather than live analog drum kit which gives it a very different sound. The essence of "post-punk" is that it took the spirit of punk but went off in various different directions on the form. So as "hard-core punk" stayed with loud, fast, simplistic, aggressive, mohawks, etc. there were various post-punk groups forming goth, industrial, and "alternative" in general. Then that sort of blends in with the generic "new wave" of the 80s which was a more commercial advancing of what started with punk but much more pop palatable and emphasizing synthesizers. Anyway you look I'd say punk was the dividing line between two generations of music (boomer and gen X) culminating with punk inspired Nirvana that upended the mainstream 14 years after punk first hit.
Good post and true. 👏. Ya, post punk is like the cool artsy cousin of punk rock. My friend would say this. Punk rock=the world is broken... Im angry and want to change it. Emo punk=.the world is broken....Im sad and whiney. Post punk, new wave = the world is broken...Im jammin and dancin. Goth, darkwave, industrial=The world is broken..but I find beauty in the darkness, lets chill and dance. Ska punk=.the world is broken....I have a 🎺 trumpet, lets jam and dance.. 😆
44 years since Ian Curtis ended his life and left us on the eve of their first US tour, what might have been eh, anyhow the remains of the band became New Order and ultimately legends, Ceremony was one of the last Joy Division songs and one of the first by New Order, Ceremony was released on single by Joy Division/New Order and its B side In a Lonely Place was perhaps an indication of the tortured state of IC.
So, Ian Curtis is probably the greatest poster child for the crippling effects of depression. After he hung himself, the remaining members of the band formed New Order. Another great band to be sure. That riff that you mentioned is actually the bass played by Peter Hook. He was known for picking his bass almost like a guitar. The song Blue Monday by New Order is a great example of that. Btw, Blue Monday is still the highest selling 12" vinyl ever sold in the UK. Cool song choice.
The rawness, honesty & passion remind me of P J Harvey. Trying to communicate is all that matters. Emotionally stripped naked. I think my favourite of theirs is Dead Souls: ruclips.net/video/MhEm4S-4v_U/видео.html
This is my favorite Joy Division song. The band's name is a reference to groups of women that the Nazis used sexually in countries they invaded. You should also listen to "I.C. Water" by Psychic TV which is a tribute song to Ian Curtis, Joy Division's singer.
Tony Wilson was one of the founders of Factory Records, but Rob was the one who signed Joy Division. Tony signed a Certain Ratio. Factory Records is a lesson on how not to run a successful record label. Wax Trax is a similar lesson.
React to more JD. Then New Order. Things sound raw because back then they didn't abuse limiters and compressors. The real feel is aloud to be present. Old shows sound great. Please react to JD song "Transmission".
It's absolutely my favourite Joy Division song. Along with Decades. They live rent free in my head.

Yeah, in that film are also episodes with Joy Division played by actors. Awesome and bizarre movie👍
Yeah we know mate

Joy division is truly the best ever so much emotion from all the instruments vibe everything RIP Ian Curtis

Transmission 'live' is fantastic, Ian losing himself in the music is jaw-dropping

Stephen Morris is a beast of a drummer and a pioneer in creating digital drum beats.
out of all their great songs this is the best. Great band.
That performance is historic.

Great reaction, to a great song!
Peter Hook's bass is all over the F#%!n pentagram! Awesome

Brilliant, can't watch this too often. And thanks for leaving some thoughts on the lyricism.
Joy Division forever!
Joy Divison were pretty revolutionary back then. I recomment you the cover version of this song by 'the killers'.
Same song, but different vibe.
Great choice and influential band.

Depends on how you measure success. Financially, maybe not, but artistically and with integrity, definitely so.
Brad gets Joy Division. Not surprised.
I saw that back then.
Thanks, Brad!
Bob?
Heart and Soul, you can almost hear Curtis stringing the rope up and positioning the chair.
Earworm 💦

I believe he has.
by the way the bands sound was completely changed by their producer so the live band and studio versions are a bit different
Bob Grieves, I remember watching this
Great job they started in 1076 with other bands great live performances
The true sound of Manchester.
Aw I was hoping to see Brad do the Ian Curtis dance.
That would be something!
New order were so bloody talented ❤
Check "Insight"...one of their most hidden treasures...
Granada reports. Its grim up north. Only kidding.
Nice
Keep going
Bernard Sumner does not get the credit he deserves.
joy division has a nicer ring to it,,,, hahahhhahah. until you know what it actually means.
