The video is an homage by Anton Corbjin (the video director) to Joy Division. Corbjin started off in the business as a photographer and took the photos of Joy Division in 1979 that were featured in the video. He always felt a great connection to the band and ultimately ended up directing the movie biopic, "Control"- the story of Ian Curtis and Joy Division. I believe the dark and light robes symbolizes grief and burial shrouds-- and perhaps the +/ - symbolizes the balance of life.

Their last album closer is almost hard to listen to because the lyrics are so sad honest and full of existential crisis leading up to his suicide that songs are like confessions or a suicide note

I totally agree with you. As much as I love that album, it is difficult to listen to at times because Ian really taps into the darkness and sadness in his own heart. There have been times when I have been listening when I will just cry because there is something so heartbreaking to listen to a person writing his eulogy.

In America the pointed hood is a represent as negative or malicious still on par with the KKK or other evil organization.
But in Europe and Asia, the pointed hoods represent a spiritual search for something good in the universe, just like druids over 1000 years ago.
