Talking to ATC

- *NOTAM* - This is a digitally remastered video of a previous video. In this version I have dramatised the ATC coms. Turns out, if I kept my previous video online, I could get myself in a hefty pile of Papa Oscar Oscar. I prefer to fly in clean and clear air. But I reckon this version's better anyway. What do you reckon? 😎
Air Traffic Controllers!
If you ever need advice on how to put a shoe on a horse, you should ask a farrier. If you ever need advice on talking to Air Traffic Controllers, you probably shouldn't ask an Ag pilot!
Today I'll try and give some tips anyway 😁
On a positioning flight taking an Air Tractor AT-502 from New Zealand's South island to the North island. Aside from the slow start due to poor weather, she was a pleasant flight.
Our ATC fam out there do a great job at keeping us safe in the skies, and speaking to them is something to look forward to. It's great having an extra set of eyes looking for traffic, and peace of mind knowing there's someone there ready to help you at an instant, if required.
You fine folk out there pushing tin, thanks for the effort you put in to keep us safe, it's very much appreciated!
Aircraft: AT-502B
Rego: ZK-SXM

As a nervous radio user this is great to watch
Nice video! Lots of us amateurs love NZ examples of radio talking...
I don't think you can get in a big pile of papa oscar oscar for rebroadcasting ATC. The reason is, it's only an offence to rebroadcast communications **that weren't intended for you**. As ATC is talking to you explicitly, and you're meant to be receiving it, there's no law that you're breaking. I checked with a lawyer, and his opinion was the same (although note this is not official legal advice at all).
I would also argue it's the same on a general broadcast channel e.g. an MBZ. As it's intended for you along with others.
The law was designed to stop people intercepting radio that wasn't for them. e.g. media rebroadcasting emergency services radio. Here's the legislation, it is quite clear about the intended recipient:
legislation.govt.nz/act/public/1989/0148/latest/DLM197387.html
I've never had any trouble sharing ATC in my videos. Keep it up!
Yeah I agree with all of this. I was discussing it with the minister of communications and he basically said I'd need someone with the legal eyes to go over it to be certain. I'll do that when I win lotto, in the meantime I said I'll just err on the side of caution remove the old, replaced with this one, and keep doing the rest like this too 🤠
Thanks for the info @pureglide …
@jimbo, loved your approach to including the comms from atc, while actually not
Thanks for sharing your (lawyer’s) opinion Tim! NZ broadcast law is even more rare on RUclips than NZ ATC content
I live in otaki ive always wanted to fly but as a young maori male growing up in this town ... It's like yeah Right mate ...out the ears straight away + could never afford any type of direction into flying a bird.. 32 now way too late now
Great stuff. Pity some ah most instructors couldn’t talk to us like that. Might learn and retain faster.
The audio from that ATC has to be one of the most articulate and understood from the many 100's if not 1000's I've listened to on many RUclips channels. Often they are a jumble of seemingly white noise. Perhaps it was the way you recorded it. 👍
Jimbo
When I'm down this vid reminds me pull ya s$it in.
Thanks.
Nice one Jimbo. Mate, 7000 VFR. Almost time for a space suit for you guys.
@Adrian Williams : Then you remember his two and a half years flying in the Himalayas... if I recall right, Jimbo said the runway at Lukla is at 9000 ft. 😵💫 🥴
Keep them coming Jimbo, love ya videos
The controller didn’t sound Kiwi and it sounded more like a robot voice
Awesome video as always!
yeh a kiwi pilot!!! awesome mate, subbed!!
Cheers mate 🍻
Quick catch up.
Haha, classic! I saw the original of this video and loved the super relaxed Kiwi farmer meets professional pilot. I'm not complaining about having it show up again as a low papa Oscar Oscar variant!
One day, the caa will tell us we can publish the comms, until then, this is a really nice way to capture it!
Well done.
@Zane Trevarton : It's just as well the FAA aren't so restricting... all those hundreds of hours of Oshkosh Airventure videos would be only half as good without the ATC content.
In fact, that's a good place to get a feel for traffic flows... the radio comms is one way only though; pilots listen but generally no-talkie unless asked.
A great RUclips channel to listen to a "Non-professional" pilot who is completely at ease with her comms patter is Stevie Triesenberg. ruclips.net/video/TKASMw9b9B4/видео.html
I worked in the Air New Zealand Airport Ops Centre at Wellington. We monitored the tower frequency as a way of keeping track of landing aircraft, so loading, catering, engineering etc. could plan where to be next. After thirty-plus years, I learned what to listen for... in busy times, when Wellington's notorious bad weather arrived, you could hear a pin drop in our office if one of the really good controllers was working his/her radio magic. It could certainly make or break our day! 👍
Nice there young fella . Not too long between these two last videos. Keep up the good work 😅👍👌
Jeeze Jimbo, you’d better be careful- if you keep making well thought out practical content like this the men in black vans might abduct you and force you to write for the vector magazine!
Haha!
How come you seem to always land on the grass when there is a sealed runway available? Is it a tail dragger thing?
It dampens my wobbly landings 😉
From one human to another, another great video.
jimbo = besto
You flew over my place I'm about 10km south SE of Lake wairarapa. I'm learning microlight out of hood your atc chat was brilliant gives me much confidence.. cheers jimbo we did alot of top dressing on our old place. Nice flying
ATC is the one thing that stopped me from ever pursuing a pilot licence. I have been watching aviation videos since youtube began and it's still all just gibberish to me.
Good video and message Jimbo. We just did the same trip from CH to MS in our Jabiru at 7000' controlled VFR. If cloud allows its a no brainer and ATC are normally very accommodating. Enjoy seeing SXM operating out of here.
Great video Jimbo! I’m about to sit my NZ FRTO exam as part of my glider pilot license. Ever little bit of NZ ATC content helps! 😀
Watched it twice. Thanks for posting.
Another great video Jimbo - thanks for sharing!
03:10 Lol, "worse could happen; they say vacate the airspace and they don't talk to you..." ;) ATC is just too nice and kind to do even that down there :)
Edit: I've listened them working some incapacitated pilots or novice students quite professionally and patiently, they always sounded like caretakers:)
Yes, very kind and professional people. They do a fantastic job. Cheers for your message 👍
Woohoo that's home!! I'll be there soon. Nice.
Great video, you have an amazing job.
Hey mate how's it going.. your videos always push me to want to finish my ppl.. I got as far as my first cross country solo and couldn't finish due my finial situation.. awesome work keep it up cheers
Can you not get restricted license first?
One of your coolest yet Jim. ATC talk is so cool :)
Another entertaining video! Do you happen to know the top dressing pilot requirements?
Cheers Jimbo
Every country is different, some don't have any. Your local civil aviation rules and regulations will have the exact numbers for your region 👍
Great video as always Jimbo!
Cool video! I’m not a pilot but if I were ever to fly a plane it would be a small one like this, seems super fun. BTW, is it a one-seater? How would you train in one of those? Where would the teacher sit?
Got plenty of grunt that plane…..
This isn’t a small plane by any means, you gotta take a look at it up close and you’ll know the size haha. Planes like Diamond, Cessna are much smaller compared to this.
Edit: I think there is a trainer version of these air tractors where you/your teacher gets to sit behind. If you wanna start getting into one of these, you can right away get yourself to a school where they have these air tractors and train pilots. Also I’m not 100% sure but I think this is a turbo propeller engine but there are variants/modified with piston engines.
@@mountains_beaches98 cool, still seems like a fun plane 😁
Most of these are self ratings. Have an instructor show you what's what on the ground, then go do it by yourself 🚀
Jimbo
Catch up old vids
Still loving them.
