This is the third Ridge Racer for PSX and albeit aesthetically inspired by Rave Racer, this is a 100% original game. Sometimes it's considered the best in the series gameplay wise, but I guess that the graphics and music couldn't meet the expectations even if they are quite good, and the game didn't sell too well. It's structured in 5 classes where you have to all the courses to pass to the next one, after that you have to do all the way again with the reverse circuits, and finally you'll arrive the last class where special cars and madness are waiting for you. Each time you win a race (1-3 positions) you will get some money to buy or upgrade the car, so that's the way of advancing in this game.
I'll have to apologize for how bad recorded the 6th class' Over Pass City and Lakeside gate are, but the insane difficulty prevented me from repeating the miracle for correcting the recording error in one (I hope you guys can get used to the choppyness after the first lap or so) and in the other one I just couldn't arrive first even with savestates, so I left it like that. And notice also how edited this longplay is. The CGs for example come after beating a class, not after each race.
I tried to keep some of the game's rpg/evolution elements in the first 5 classes, but seeing it now, I could probably have done better job at that. What I usually did was to upgrade the original car for the second class and in the third buy the cars with best grip (Age) and speed (Assoluto) upgrade them until the end. For the 6th class I mostly used the (Lizard) as drifting with the Age was super punishing.

One of the few racing games where you can hear the wind rushing off the walls at high speeds when you get really close. Still one of my favorite racing games with a stellar OST!

and yet is was the best console i ever played.
There is a reason: drifting becomes crazy hard. It becomes much harder to judge your point of exit in third person view, and you usually end up smacking into a wall. I remember struggling like crazy with R4 until just using the default first person view. The games were simply designed around it -- the original Ridge Racer in the arcade doesn't even have third person as an option.
Best feature...loading your own music CD after the game has loaded so you'd be driving to your own music. My favourite at the time was LTJ Bukem Earth 1 & 2 at the time. What a blast it was.

There was this kid next door to my mom's condo who didn't have a PS1, but had this game, and he always invited himself over to come play it on my system. He loved the game so damn much... I don't blame him! :)
And that voice actress, well, makes me sexually excited.

For me Rage Racer is better than RR Type 4. Both have great track and musics but there something special that Rage Racer has over RR Type 4. The speed in this game is crazy. For example,when you drive the Devil Car(Assoluto Dragone) on the Oval Extreme at maximum speed, it feels like your actually driving backward. It is ridiculous.
4:45, taking over the car, jump from the tunnel, music intensifies as the hardest corner comes up, a fantastic drift followed by YEAH!!! from the soundtrack. I have no words. Good job man :D
I like how the emulator's audio plugin makes the menu music sound like dubstep.
remember me and my mates used to drool over graphics... and only when we got to metal gear solid did we shout "WOW ROUND WHEELS!"

@Martin Brichta 8 years ago i posted this damn. sadly nothing much has changed, the industry has worsened and become toxic overall, lootboxes, gambling mechanics, fake advertising and so on. And now kids think that fortnite and season passes are gold standard in gaming.
I went back and re-played FF8 and FF9 recently. Absolute classics.
@Martin Brichta tried FFX again the voice acting destroyed it for me, managed when I was 15 but now it's just far too cringe LOL
@Martin Brichta FF8 is the only one I've played of the series, but I absolutely adored it as a teen (now 33) though haven't played it since; couldn't get enough of the music score in particular.
I miss this kind of arcade racer. Just cleverly designed tracks and lots of controlled drifting - no excessive explosions, constant replays or having to eliminate opponents. This took a lot of practice, but man was it ever rewarding, once you got the skills to handle the cars. I know the Ridge/Rage Racer games were notorious for the unforgiving "invisible" walls, but you learned to manage. So awesome!
Oh, and this also reminds me of the most epic controller, I've ever used for racing games, the neGcon. I don't think I've ever achieved the same level of precision handling on a modern joypad. The neGcon with any of the Ridge Racer or WipEout games was just pure gaming bliss!

Oh my god! No one ever knew what eager racer was when I talked about this game to other racer players. This game was the shit when it came out I wish nameco would remake this game for this years game systems. I'd play the HELL out of it!!

I love this race game. This is how all race games should be. You gain money and you can upgrade. The other race games have upgrades as well i'm aware of that, but it's not the same way that Rage Racer has. I love this game and it's one of the few i like out there. Still waiting for a true follow up
Saw this in a second hand shop on ps1, didnt care how much it cost i had to buy it. Flipped it over to see a 50p sicker on it. I was so happy lol
i like this way more than R4. It has great graphics and the colorful feel of the earlier Ridge Racer games that R4 completely lacks in favour of more realistic enviroments.

Ah Rage Racer, the first game I got for the Playstation. A pure joy to play with the NeGcon controller.

Haha! oh the memories... I remember one time as a kid, i was having sleepover at my friends house and i bought this game that i had with me. We were playing this game the whole night. The game needed so intense concentration that we both had button marks on our thumbs for pressing the button so hard! :D :D

That was my first game on the Playstation. I loved the game. The last class was very difficult for me as a child, but at the end I had 1 gold and the rest bronze. But I was only 10-11 years old at the time

@Toksyuryel There isn't any official info about it, but I'd say that Rave Racer is indeed the third RR, as it was out even before Ridge Racer Revolution, which would be a spinoff just as this one.

Damn you nostalgia! Other than Gran Turismo 2, this was hands down the best racer I played.
Still playing this in 2020...
Setup: Modified 9000 series PS1, along with the American NTSC game version (red disc) and the NeGcon (NPC-101) controller (full twist option and the 'H' setting) - full grip driving, automatic, half BGM, and first person view.
I first got the gold screen last year, and I tried for days to get class six boxed off. I worked really hard for it. What a feeling to have finally done it, and to see a gold title screen. It may seem like a small reward, but it's a reminder that brings a smile every time you load up the memory card.
Some of you may have noticed that the trophy screen goes into double digits for each class... Well, I'm aiming to see what will happen when they each get to 99 - 100.
Who knows what will happen? :D

I think you're better off just braking and not losing your grip with in class 1-3 with the grey car, but what the hey... you didn't lose much, at least.

Hot damn I loved Rage Racer. I liked Ridge Racer, but Rage Racer? Now that was something special. I just absolutely frekain' loved it.

I fucking hated trying to drift in this game, it drove me nuts. RR Type 4, no problem. Outrun 2006, no problem. But this? It made want to snap the disc.

The "car selection" music on my copy sounds slightly different. This version sounds like it's missing elements

A few mistakes on first track round 1, but your drifting on the main bend was excellant, i brake drive it rather than drift u did it faster than me. Love rage racer classic game!

Love this game to death. It is my favorite racing game of all time. The sheer speed and excitement this game brings is something i truly cherish the most. That being said I like the MUSIC and the track location from the rest of the Ridge Racer series because it has a very European atmosphere like Arc de Triumph,Greek shorelines and ruins. Am i right ppl that this has that kind of atmoshpere ? ;p

We are rapidly approaching the 30th anniversary of Ridge Racer, it’s just next month.
Definitely more tracks should have been added to beef up replay value. -A two player mode would have been nice...again, it would add to the replay value.

@FooAllStars Foo, I saw your videos while I was recording this, and you must be one of the best Rage Racer players out there, probably the best in youtube. But remember that longplays aren't about doing infinite combos or beating the best records, it's more about showing as much content as posible. I tried really hard to be the first one in that race but in the end, it was being third or cancelling the longplay.
The draw distance is pretty amazing for an early Playstation game!

@rookie1405 It's Ridge Racer 3 (like how Ridge Racer Revolution was Ridge Racer 2). They didn't start giving them actual numbers until R:4, though this game was the first appearance of the "mascot girl".

God... this video brings all my memory back and so touched. I was spend over 500 hours in this game. And I love the music. How can I get those songs?
