      @@FloridaManRacer It isn't lengthening a course by 300 or 500 yards that increase the cost in water dramatically. Most of the time it's only building 8 or 10 back tees, not changing the existing course like for example lengthening the fairway (mowing it closer to the front tee). ;)
      I think Chambers Bay is a great course but it's just not a course that can be played in tournament conditions in June after an exceptional heat period.

    Player is nuts! The course may be 7900 yards but it was hard as a rock, like a British Open course, so it didn't play that long. The greens may have been a problem but you cant argue with the incredible last round and all the drama that was there. Maybe they should let the rough grow 7 inches so that you cant play out of it like they do at most US Open courses, which by the way are mostly Country Club courses that you and I cant play, that is really fun golf. I wont play at Chambers Bay mostly because they are charging over $200 a round, not because he doesn't like how much water the course needs because the world has a water shortage. He probably has a case of sour grapes since he didn't get the bid to design the course.

If you take the 60's from here and add 2 then you can give me that stat.

    Some players were complaining about the greens. I thought it was great to see how they faired on greens the average player plays on every day in regards to condition. I have played a Robert Trent Jones, Jr. designed course and it was very challenging. The Dunes style course design is not his typical type of course design. It looks like a wonderful design and I think it will improve once it matures.

      Ill file this comment under "things that didn't happen". Greens fees at Chambers for residents of WA are still 150+ per round. Non residents are nearly double. Learning to play there is probably the most illogical thing you can imagine. Imagine learning to ski at an expensive resort with only black diamond runs. The challenge of the course would be lost on the fact that you are still learning how to play. You could learn to play for free at a local park in an unused soccer field and learn more than playing Chambers Bay.

She grew up in the same road as Gary and indeed Sol Kerzner of Sun City fame had houses. As a young child she would trot down to Gary's house to play with his kids. I've been golfing since 1975. Courses have become like conveyor belts in a production line. Get ' em in, and get 'em out as fast as possible. I've been on a public course where our group was told to skip a hole to promote faster play. This after we paid $180 per person, so thats $720 our group paid to play 18 holes. Slow or not, you pay, you play.. all the holes you pay for.
    I remember walking courses and enjoying the round. Now carts are mandatory. Courses are designed easier with the mindset of getting players off the course asap instead of the mindset of creating an enjoyable challenging course.

    Gary Player is completely right. Those people saying "Well, someone won (Spieth at -5), so all the complainers are just whining" don't get it. Of course SOMEONE has to come out on top...on top of an entire field that was disgusted with the greens and the course of Chambers Bay. Without a doubt, it is a poorly designed course with incredibly unfair layouts to both the players and the FANS. The fans were so far away from the players, unable to even see the players on some holes. And to claim that this course was built "for the U.S. Open"??? Ridiculous! It is a horrible course. Just because Jordan Spieth didn't really say anything publicly doesn't mean he liked the course. I'm sure if you were close to him and asked him how he truly felt about the course, he'd tell you how poor the greens were and how bad of a golf course it was. There is no denying it: Chambers Bay is a bad golf course for all golf, and the USGA should never go back.

    • @marinersebay
      @marinersebay 9 лет назад +3

      MrElculver2424 You obviously never played Chambers Bay and don't know anything about golf. US open layout suppose to be tough. USGA made it tough for the US Open but it's actually very easy golf course to play for amateurs. They have tees ranging from 5000 yards to 7100 yards. It was voted one of easiest golf course for women. 2015 US Open had most rounds in 60's and if you look at one-putt percentage, it was one of the highest in US Open history. These was only one hole where fans couldn't get close to players, number 8. In fact, my 6 year old niece got golf balls from few of the players on Saturday. If you ever been to big golf tournaments, you can't follow one group because of crowd size.
      You can agree with this senile idiot all you want but it just makes you sound like an ignorant senile fool. Gary Player's bid to design Chambers Bay was rejected 9 years ago because his design called for boring unimaginative golf course.
      What an old bitter fool.

      There's a difference between "tough" and "impossible". I don't mean that it's impossible to play, but if perfect shots don't work, then the course is crap. Period. If you don't see it, you need your head checked.
      To be sure, I'm not entirely on Gary Player's side, either. I don't have a problem with high bunkers. Bunkers are a hazard and should be penalizing. I also think these greens would have been bearable if they were at least in decent shape.

  • @QMPhilosophe
    @QMPhilosophe 9 лет назад +19

    A course should reward accurate shots and penalize bad ones, but over and over again shots that were right on the money ended up rolling 50-60 yards or more off target. Yes, every player has to play the same course, but tricking up courses like the USGA likes to do for the Opens takes a lot of the skill out of the game. Two people could hit virtually identical shots towards a pin and one could be 5 ft while the other is 50 yards. Highly nonlinear!

    • @marinersebay
      @marinersebay 9 лет назад +2

      Paul Dirac You obviously don't know what accurate shots look like. I've played Chambers Bay numerous times and it has the widest fairways and largest greens. That's the beauty of this golf course. It' invites you to think and execute high percentage shots because dangers are every where in plain sight.
      Listen to Spieth's discussion with caddy and interview about the last hole.
      It's perfect illustration of strategy golf at Chambers Bay. On his second shot, his caddy advises him not to be left on 18th green and Speith says that he pushed it to right side of the green and that it's okay because it's the right side to miss. His ball ended up 12 ft below the hole for easy 2-putt. On the other hand, Dustin aims right at the flag and ends up left of flag. The exact spot Spieth tried to avoid. Oh and Dustin 3-putted to lose the US Open.
      Just because you don't understand something, that doesn't mean it's unfair.
      Respect the people that know what they are doing. People at the USGA know what they are doing.

    • @mpreiss7780
      @mpreiss7780 8 лет назад

      +James Ogletree exactly! just like jordans shot on #15 on Sunday, he knew you cant hit it 3 yards short of the flag as it would roll back 20 feet, but he did hit it there(made a great par though) so its his fault and not the course designer. it rewarded great shots and it was one of the greatest final rounds in history! bring it back!

    Ok, Yes this is a public golf course, but unfortunately this isn’t a course for your average weekend golf game. The expensive green fees (over $200) put it in a different category. Did you even check Gary? This course is unaffordable for most people. Are you forgetting that? You seem to be comparing this course to your average municipal course, but that’s comparing apples and oranges. And back to what I said about the challenge of the course. It’s the same when I go skiing. I can choose to go to the easy ski area near Seattle, called Snoqualmie summit that’s perfect for beginners learning to ski or snowboard, or I can go to an area with extreme slopes, advanced terrain, that’s 3000 feet higher, on the boundary of Mt. Rainier, called Crystal Mountain, for example. (Which by the way also has higher rates)

    Gary Player is absolutely right on the money with everything he said coming from a person who works in Golf Course Maintanice and design and being an assistant superintendent for the last 5 years for a course that does more remodels every year then any other course in the state of Florida I too give the architect the blame on that course I loved when he said "the man who designed this course had one leg shorter then the other" meaning Robert Trent Jones Jr I work for his brother Rees Jones who is the designer of Redstick the course I work for most people don't know that Rees and his brother are rivals they don't get along if you look at Rees Jones's course none of them are even close to the track that his brother designed at Chambers Bay

    He is right about the equipment. I remember numerous Major tournaments won by 1 o 2 under par in the past. It would be interesting to see how today's player would fair with equipment from the past. Equipment that doesn't assist your shot or distance. How would they fair against Arnie, Jack or Harry Vardon?

    during the 2015 U.S. Open I lived 20 minutes from ChambersBay Golf Course. Before the U.S. Open, I didn't know where Chambers Bay was . I love golfing, I golf as much as I can. For a public course, it's a little too expensive for me. I believe it's around$195.00 a round.

    Player is absolutely 100% correct.. This place was not a US Open course. The guys were hitting 34 irons from th deepest rough (if you want to call it that. They were driving the ball 380 yards! It was a links cooourse so the public was denied watching the US Open this year We had 3 majors on links courses, (The PGA was at Whistling Straits...) horrible decision to have it here...

    I've played chambers in 2018, 2022, and 2023. All three times it was super fun and very fair, i really enjoyed having to get creative around the greens by playing the side and back slopes. I'm a 5.7 handicap so its not like I'm a scratch or a + handicap. All three times I played from about 6900 yards and shot 78, 83, 81 respectively. Gary ego maniac Player as usually trying to remain relevant at his old age. and Gary, it rains in the PNW 10 months out of the year, other than like July and August the course doesn't use sprinkler water, mother nature does the work because it rains six days a week

    When you are one of 5 players to win the Career Grand Slam and to do it during the PEAK Nicklaus years you have every insight to how the US Open should play. I thought the greens were a joke. I wonder how Winged Foot is going to play when they go back, as well as Oakmont. I know that Winged Foot will be Savage if they set it up correct. If they are saying players are hitting it too far, the last 2 course set-ups have been terrible. US Open should have gouge-out rough and concrete but receptive greens.

    11 handicapper and shot 88 and had a wonderful time... beautiful course and incredible experience. Pretty easy to see that Gary has a personal dislike for Robert Trent Jones II who is the course architect, perhaps Gary should have mentioned a disclaimer -- it shows as Gary's rant tends toward emotion rather than facts -- Gary is trying to heap all of golf's problems on this one course. 12 holes is what Gary wants -- what a joke. Was a fun US Open in 2015 and hope it can host another major. A course that takes too much water? Tacoma averages 39" of rain each year. Gary, in this video you look like a grumpy old man.

    I have tremendous respect for Gary Player, his accomplishments and his lifetime of contributions to the game in many ways. That said, sometimes he can be a true bullshit artist. However, in this case, regarding modern courses generally and Chambers Bay in particular, he is right on. Avid players may like the opportunity to play a course which once hosted a major championship, but they would not want to play it every week simply because it's too tough, takes too long and costs too much money.

    I agree the ball is going to far. I graduated HS in 1981, that fall I was averaging 275-280 off the tee. Today at 53, I'm averaging 290 off the tee. It ain't me! It is the equipment and especially the ball. But I disagree with having one ball for the Pro's and one for the amateur. I want to play what equipment the pro's play to give myself a good measuring stick.

    While I may agree with his comments relative to the long-term future of golf I do not agree with his criticism of Chambers Bay or the architect. I played this course two years ago and was there to see two practice days. I love the course and hope it survives the criticism being thrown at it - sure it may need some reseeding of the greens - but few players complained about the course tee to green. Re the water used - they don't water this course that much - it's links-style. I loved seeing the imagination required to navigate around this course. It is a wonderful challenge for the better player. And my wife who is a 36 handicap loved the roll she got on the fairways - she felt she played really well from the ladies tees. They have so many tee boxes that you can challenge yourself as much as you want. This rant is laughable and I lost a lot of respect for the black knight because of his self-serving comments.

    Player's point is well taken when he criticizes the construction of an exceptionally difficult, if unfair, public layout at a time when the golf population is dropping and golfers need the chance to play a course where they have some chance of satisfaction. Chambers Bay is not your typical layout nor will it ever be. But we need public courses that are playable to the average golfer or eventually we will lose the game.

    I'm glad there are opportunities to play US Open venues if uve got $. But not all public courses are built the same.. CB, PB & BP are in rare category of their own.. people camp out to play them and the locals are super proud of them. People campout in the parking lot to get a tee time.. The world average score is 108.. 2 over par per hole. Bogey golf is scatch for the weekend golfer. Sir Gary, please use ur considerable wealth & expertise to design these vanilla public courses people can play for $20 or less with ur stamp of approval.. golf is meant to be challenging, I joke that aerated greens don't matter if u were going to 3 putt anyway.. we need these works of art as well as the fun ones.. if the amateur was educated in golf etiquette he would pick up his pace or play 9. It's a double edge sword. If it's too cheap golf courses turn into community bowling alleys.. Top Golf is cool, but also pricey but fun

    So far none of the arguments about it being so bad - from penalizing good shots, poor putting surfaces, how much water it needs or how the fans were screwed - hold much with me. I still would love to play it and enjoyed watching it. I've played Bethpage and being able to play an Open course is fantastic. I wouldn't not want it easier so I can get home to my family quicker. didn't do his home work again: He said: The world is suffering from a shortage of water…. imagine the water this course will take…
    Opps, Gary, you didn’t check did you. Not only is Chambers bay is environmentally green on so many levels, but It has its own water source, a deep underground well that goes deeper than sea level, with water rights from the old sand and gravel mine that preceded it, plus it uses reclaimed water from the nearby sewage treatment plant. Water that after treatment is so clean you can drink it. This course isn’t dependent on municipal water sources.
    In fact, even the adjacent towns of Lakewood and Steilacoom also get their water from 30 wells and they are not under any water restrictions or water shortage, as they are not affected by the low snow pack level from this past year. Snow packs feed reservoirs, but wells come from aquifers.
