I owned a Rock Island 1911 that I fired over 1,500 rounds through and it went bang every time I pulled the trigger. I got rid of it because it proved hard to carry concealed, and it had a weird situation where I could take it on a long day hike in sunny weather and when I got home it would have a layer of rust on it like I just carried it for 5 days in a rain forest.

I carried a commander size 1911 with surplus mags before Bill Wilson was a household name (in the homes of shooters, anyway). As mag manufacturers improved their products, I found some to be better, but, still finicky. For instance, less than one millimeter difference in the overall length of a round (brand-to-brand or reload-to-reload) could take a mag from pretty good to totally disfunctional. Thankfully, I am much better educated now and Wilson Combat has made my guns much more reliable. BTW, you two are about the best sources of info in this business.

Good stuff. Wilson combat is the way to go. I carry a 1911 45. I also compete with the same set up in IDPA matches. I don't win often, but I know how long it takes to get the gun on target and if I can make a shot. I think those are two key things to know.
I do have some sentimental reasons to run the 45. It's the first pistol the Army trained me to use. Of course the Army didn't focus much on pistol training for infantry. It was my sidearm when I carried an M60. So it was only there to keep us alive while we got the main gun running

I bought a brand new full size Ruger SR1911. Took it to the range for the first time with Norma 230 grain FMJ. Out of 100 rounds I had 6 or 7 malfunctions. It appeared that the ammo was underpowered or something. One of the rounds actually got past the extractor but was fully seated in the barrel chamber. The Range Safety Officer had to tap it out for me. Fast-forward, came back the following week with Federal 230 grain FMJ, ZERO malfunctions out of 100 rounds.

The grip prints a bit when I bend over, but I wear patterned shirts to help with concealment.

My brother, a former cop, switched because I convinced him to start shooting more (PD only required 30rds a month in practice) and we did 500rds on a single day and he had 5 stovepipes with 3 GLOCK RECOMMENDED ammunitions. My Para had zero malfs. That's $600 1911!

The real question I'd like to hear is how small can you go for compact/subcompact and be effective? I could probably shoot better at 20+ yards with a full size, but I'm not lugging M9A3 around in case I need to headshot a guy with carbine across the parking lot. Me personally- .380 pockets are out. I like my 13 round 9MM sub for carry-ability and concealment, even though the full size lends to better grouping at longer range.

A 1911 in 9mm or .38 Super would be one of my top choices for states with anti-gun legislature (magazine restrictions, ammo restrictions, etc). The only other pistol I've seen fill that niche as well as the 1911 does is the Glock 48.
Now, on the topic of ammo, because 1911s are notoriously finicky with ammo... Wilson Combat loads the XTP which I really like in a variety of calibers, it cycles 1911s very well. I've also had great luck with Speer Gold Dot which super 1911 friendly ammo and the Hornady Zombie bullets due to their rounded shape feed better than Critical Duty does in a 1911.

    • @MattH-wg7ou
      @MattH-wg7ou 2 года назад

Just wondering, if youre limited to 8-ish rounds anyway why would you chose 9mm over .45? When the capacity advantage of 9mm gets taken away, and all else is equal, Id personally rather have bigger bullets and bigger holes. Capacity sways me to a 15-20rd 9mm for EDC, but if I could have the same number of bullets but make them bigger Id do that.
But I generally shoot .45 as well as 9mm. If you shoot one better than the other then that makes perfect sense to chose it.
Please dont percieve this as a "muh stopping power, 45 rah rah" type of post! In general I dont believe there is much difference in terminal performance between well designed moderm JHP in common handgun calibers.
But still, if truly ceteris paribus, I would chose a bigger bullet.

Also, the DW magazines have been performing flawlessly. Don't believe the big gun marketing scheme, that you have to have a striker, double stack magazine, because John Wick does. Statistics show that you are well served with a single stack magazine, in the average gunfight. P.S. A single stack Kahr P9 is a good carry gun too.

When I as young I didn't have much extra cash. So I bought an Auto Ordinance 1911. It was around $200. I soon found it wasn't reliable so I began reading everything I could find on the 1911. I had plenty of time and not much money so anything cheap I could do, I did. I polished that thing until the internals were like a mirror. I got good recoil springs. Then I searched for mags. I could find the Chip McCormick Shooting Star mags ( now classic 8 round) for under $10 on sale. I got a pile, some blue, some stainless. Then over time I replaced all the internals. During this time I also got everything to reload. I could reload for under 4 cents a round if I watched for deals. Back then you could find really good prices at gun shows. And I shot it all I could. I had it running great. I bought one Wilson mag because of the hype. It worked except it would not lock the slide open when empty. The stars still work great. I carried it almost all the time. Over the years I've had other guns most were good. Now I've quit shooting it because my arthritis makes it hurt like a bastard. I'm thinking specifically about the knife attacker on today's ASP episode (mental or high???). If I've got a violent individual behaving in a manner that makes me think he's so high he can't feel his face- what's the probability his nervous system is not going to care about OC spray. What is interesting is that a 1911 is desirable to compete with because it has a great trigger and is so shootable. Hmmmm seems like that would be an advantage in a gunfight. I do not see reliability issues mine. Good ones work! Capacity is the biggest negative for me and the polymer double stacks are not miss machines. I can shoot them just as well with a little more focus. Nothing brings me more joy in a pistol though than a 1911. I love them.

Quality of ammo plays a huge roll in my experience. When I got my colt around 12 years ago, it ran fine but every once in a while it would stove pipe. I heard people say the usual things: 1911's are unreliable, they need better magazines, they need to be broken in, squeaky clean etc. Not saying that some of those statements dont hold water, but not my personal experience. Long story short after testing different ammo, I found that Winchester white box was the problem...it would fail at least 1 one round out of a box of 50 and I'm being generous...it was more. Stopped using that ammo some years back and have had zero failures since be it clean, a little dirty, stock mags and still not broken in as some would say.

You can tell in the first 100-200 rounds whether or not your 1911 is reliable enough for SD purposes. For those of us who have to buy our own ammo (and are not so paranoid) the following procedure seems to work well: 100 rounds of ball through your NEW gun, if everything seems fine, clean and lube it then shoot another 50 to 75 rounds of practice to re-verify functionality. Clean and lube again, then, using your duty magazines, verify cycling with duty ammo as follows: load a round of practice ammo into the chamber insert a magazine with one round of duty ammo on top and one round of duty ammo on the bottom of the magazine (in between rounds are practice ammo). Run through the entire magazine. If you have a failure it will most likely occur, whilst cycling duty ammo, when the spring pressure is greatest and least. Do this a few times till you feel the love. After that, you're good to go. If you have problems, you either need to repeat this procedure as the gun breaks in or send it off to a competent gunsmith for reliability work.

Look our biggest problem is the ammo shortage and ammo price. When the pri e of ammo is 20% up and difficult to obtain this discourages gun ownership and weakens protection of our 2A rights. I still do not like Glocks because once you shoot a 1911 with that great single action trigger it just isn't the same anymore. I shoot the 45 only because it is what I am familiar with and was able to get lots of it when I could not buy one 9mm round.
Capacity is always great, but I have always been able to .45ACP round when I cannot buy one 9mm round 7-9 is better than 0.
