I’ll add a few more tips to think about when designing clothing; for non humans consider how tails, wings, horns etc, effect the clothings lay on the form and how it is talon off or put on. Think about how it is put in and taken off. What techniques are known? (Such as clasps, buttons and zippers, types of stitch etc) What fabrics are available? What colours/dyes and textures are available (some times/places have limits) What laws are there? Modesty, nobility/class, job etc. in some time/places it may even be punishable by death to wear a certian outfit/colour etc. such as in modern us it’s years in prison for impersonating a police officer! Or how Tyrian purple was nice only worn by kings/emperor eras and if anyone else wore it they would be excecuted. As well as modesty laws in an area; can women/men show bare chests? Can they show bare legs? Bare shoulders etc? Religious beliefs and modesty of the individual. Wealth and access to clothing options of the character. Maybe I’d love to wear expensive silk dresses… but can I personally afford that? Disability/comfort and illness. I have IBS I try to avoid any pressure or tightness on my belly and am therefore extremely likely to wear dresses and jumpsuits. If the character is sensitive to itchy or tight clothes they won’t wear them, etc. Events; what clothing is appropriate for an event or location. Is the character trying to make a particular impression? Even if that ‘impression’ is blending in. Job; what clothing is enforced/legal and/or practical for a job. If they are a warrior ensure clothing can logically be fought in, allow an acrobat to be acrobatic, what is the rule for a job? Is there a uniform? How much can a uniform be ‘legally’ altered or accessorized to show individuality? Etc. Skill of personals crafting and/or local tailors and crafters plus availability. Maybe the character wants a custom outfit but who can and will make it? Is there a local tailor who can? Can the character afford their fees? Is there a waiting list or are they free to work now? Etc. Knowledge availability; hew were spoiled with the internet now but how available was education and books/knowlegde in the time/place of your story. Can the character and/or skilled trailers easily learn the techniques to make and press clothing and accessories? Is there a school? Workshops? Internet? Can they apprentice at an atelier? Etc. Is there easily available affordable clear instructional books? Is the user of said books able to easily use and learn from them? Or a combination of in life practical learning AND books? Etc. How durable is the clothing? Is it more of a costume , fast fashion or built to last? Tailored; is it adjusted to fit the character exactly or a bit off sized such as loo large. Was it ‘off the rack?’ Or has it been tailored to fit? Was it hastily stolen from a random pile at a used clothing tent in the bazar? If yes it probably shouldn’t fit the character perfectly! Etc. Is it malicious? I’ll explain; Bridesmaids dresses are for example often malicious. Intentionally designed to be ridiculous unflattering and ugly so as to make someone else look better. I’d also categorize 1/3 of uniforms as ‘malicious’ such as fast food restaurants. It’s ugly and noticeable and doesn’t get confused with a ‘regular non employee person’. So that a customer knows who the ‘servant’ is. I personally dislike this practice but it may be important to the story sometimes to consider/include this. Is it built to impress? From the malicious side of the super wealthy nobles dressing to show their wealth and ‘superiority’ to the positive side of a dedicated cosplayer making the best possible costume to make everyone around them and themselves full of awe, joy and true happiness. Some clothing becomes more of a costume built to impress! Anyways here’s what I thought of, hope it helps someone!
