Erika Miklósa - Der Hölle Rache (Queen of the Night) - Minkowski

- Hungarian coloratura soprano Erika Miklósa singing the famous Queen of the Night aria Der Hölle Rache Kocht In Meinem Herzen from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera Die Zauberflöte (K 620). This video is taken from a 07.09.2003. performance in Bochum which was conduced by Marc Minkowski. You can sence his style in the playing of the orchestra, although, considering the fact that this is Minko at work, I expected the whole thing to be at least a bit faster...

HER RUNNING AWAY AFTER SHOVING THE KNIFE IN THE DAUGHTER'S HANDS IS SO FUNNY
xDDDD 2:42
Yes xd
Pamina = my friend/sibling
The Queen = me.
The knife =
1) the answer booklet we 'borrowed' from the teacher,
2) candy from the supermarket,
3) the hardest part of the group assignment,
4) the package of cookies we stole from our parents,
5) the invalid train ticket,

Hahahahahaha
i love her voice and the crazy eyes
but the floating daughter just made me laugh the entire song
YEA HAHAHAHA
Me too HAAH
My mistake. I thought that floating individual was Papageno! 😂😂😂
Totally bizarre!
2:50 Was her daughter acting or feeling really dizzy after swinging in the air?
I love her voice and her psychopathic expressions. It's so good when the singer can sing and move and do facial expressions at the same time.
Also she looks like a fusion of the Joker and Raven from the Teen Titans.
Yes
A genius !
The fact that she looks like Raven is what made me watch this!
De de as de Gr fé
she is singing very fast, but it think it makes the song more 'scary'..
HAd the same opinion--very fast, but very unnerving at the same time.
Is my favourite version what I saw ever in net
she certainly terrifies me! 😳
why song its an aria
Maybe not more scary, but dynamic and impressive i think
This is my absolute favorite rendition. She actually looks threatening, and it makes the staccato seem like maniacal laughter which is the only way, to me, it makes sense.
Согласна. Самое идеальное исполнение этой арии!!! Брависсимо!!!
@@user-hd7fj2op7eDiana Damrau is also good
Yes it can't be anything but glee at her intent, can it
... when she puts the knife into Pamina's hand and flees like Batman hahahahah
Priceless :,)
She sings it very well though
Serving futuristic Morticia Addams in space realness
Edwin Benedict Yass gawd
I think she looks like Artemizia the Assassin from 300 🤔
ahhahahhaah good one
I love how she looks utterly psychopathic while singing this song. Works really well for the character.
The set and costumes look like they came out of the original Power Rangers series.
This is the scariest Queen of the Night I've heard. The frenzied, higher-than-usual tempo augments her well-acted insane mannerisms, and the makeup works so well! Also, it's amazing that she manages this velocity with aplomb. Brava!
a tradíció: ruclips.net/video/21c-pGjHb9k/видео.html
2:03 this part got me like, ok. The shape of mouth changed but she was able to maintain those notes with her own version using decrescendo. Maaan! It looks waaay more scary. And I like it.
Does anyone else get chills around 2:03 when she just grits her teeth and smiles while continuing to sing? I've seen a few of her performances of this now and it seems to be one of her favorite things to do. It's so deranged and it just makes me feel so afraid for my own life, it's so cool! It really captures the mood of the aria.
Singing was great, but the space suits were very distracting.
+Sally MJ hahahhahahahah................loool....too funny, you are right. the costume designer lost the plot a bit....lol
It’s supposed to be in the future. I don’t know why though.
What's distracting about space suits? Pamina swinging around like she has her parachute stuck in a tree is far more distracting!
She looks like a gay voldemort😂 Love the vocals though😂
Marilyn Manson of the Night
Marilyn Manson with tits! Of the night
But this is cool!!!
😂😂😂😂😂
@@minxstole93 Marilyn Manson with tits is just plain Marilyn Manson. Just sayin'.

She's hella talented, but I would like to have a word with whoever put this whole thing together.
Credit to the OG...Mozart
Oh, what a voice... 😍 And to sing it that fast makes it even harder.
But I'd love to know what the idea behind the presentation was.
So you can stab him in the back is my only guess!
Drugs.
Yeah me too. I love her expressions and her voice is truly amazing, but the set is like 😦 know what I mean?
@@outtabubblegum7034 That's the only plausible explanation. ^^
Cher on crack?
She is, without a doubt, the most insane queen of the night: with that horrible demented "smile", she will feed my next nightmare ! Simply Brilliant!
Such psychotic genius... an interesting contrast with Diana Damrau, whom I also love here.
I've been watching this non-stop for days now
it's certainly mesmerising
Good lord. I thought I was in the weirdest production of Magic Flute ever, but this takes the cake.
Absolutely wonderful rendition of an extremely difficult song to sing. Many have failed, but this woman nails it. Forget the costumes and listen to one of the most demanding roles in music.
Saw her live at the LA Opera. She's scary. As she should be.
Yeah. She's definitely scary here too, but I really think that the set is like 😣
I really don't get the hate this production gets. I accept that it's personal taste and all but to me it's all very well done. Minkowski's conducting fits, Miklosa's characterization, technique and acting is top level and the set design collaborates with the storyline of the aria. Pamina is simply helpless, swinging without direction, has no say whatsoever in this whole shabang her mother puts her through under the strict authority. I say it's a great visual representation and a much more than adequate modernization put together , which I find extremely rare in contemporary efforts to modernize an opera.
I loved how the daughter covered her ears. Erika's voice could shatter glass!
Every other version where the daughter does NOT cover her ears will seem weak and pathetic now. It's exactly what would happen in real life when the banshee queen starts shrieking at you like that! Great directing.
Great voice! As far as the production... well... Lilly Munster meets Mozart.
I'd say either Cher or Morticia Addams.
More like Liberace gone glam/goth 😉
Musically speaking, I'm all for a fresh, new, innovative approach which, in this particular case works miracles... But visually sometimes these "modern" productions can be completely pointless, unfortunately.
Oh, I disagree about the production style. To me it caught the feel of 'Metropolis', and other early (ironically, silent!) movies. Dealing with that level of obsession - anything works visually, and well at that!
Agree with 100%. Found all the hanging wires distracting and ugly
OMG -- Ms. Miklosa may be the best QOTN yet, vocally she nailed it, she's certainly convincing (not to mention scary). As for everything else, don't get me started.
The vibration in her voice was really amazing. Like, it was so damn fast yet on tune
This is hands down my favorite performance of this aria I have seen anywhere. She is head and shoulders above everyone else I've seen. No one else lands the "crazy", they sound too pretty and delicate. The speed she takes it at makes it clear those repeated Cs and As are her laughing/cackling. Not just some random incongruous coloratura that makes no sense when you consider what she is singing about in this scene.
the daughter dangling around really is unnecessary lol..
I think the scene is about the daughter...
Marionette! Love it!!
it represents her descent into madness.geese
It is as if they are making a satire to mock the opera. Quite ridiculous.
@Kasia Exactly. Plus, those not familiar with opera who look at this will watch with already formed negative ideas about opera, see this, and walk away with their negative perceptions confirmed. To them opera is an art for elites only. So these productions are not only disgusting for those who already like opera, but for newcomers too. These productions have the ability to kill opera. I wish directors would stop with the Regietheater garbage.
I'm hungarian too, i was born in Kiskunhalas like Erika Miklósa too! We are so proud that Erika is the first Queen of night on the world! Thanks for this video! :)
yes. I saw her Met production in English and German twice. She deserves that and is the trademark.
Welcome to the real world... for e.g. Ágay Karola sang it in the Met (NYC) not to speak of Márai Gyurkovics or Szilvia Geszty on the most famous stages of the world...
@@beehoney9357 Met is kind of UN. "modern" house with almost 4k seats.
Erika Miklósa is incredible in this perform!
I love her. And her trilles too!
Perfect voice! Thx
Erika Miklosa was a pentathlete as a teenager and sang a lot. When she was heard by a person that told her she should study opera. She has the power and control needed for this most difficult part is superb. The greatest Queen of the Night I've heard.
Unexpected tempo, but still one of the best performances I've heard for this piece!
I would have loved to see the full opera like that, despite the "strange" outfits...
This is definitely up there with Diana's performance, if not better. They're both the only ones that truly embody the creepy characterization.
If Erika had a similar production and a better audio setup like Diana's this would've been the best version by far.
Apparently she did perform as the Queen in the famous Covent Garden version which Diana sang in.
@@johnnybrown6050 really? Nice I'll look up that performance, cheers
@@HereWeJoe I have yet to find it. Her acting is so unlike anyone else, including Diana. Her singing and behavior is more like a laughing psychopathic mother than an angry mother screeching randomly.
Edda Moser imho is still the best on this aria, followed by Erika.
Fast tempo + Erika Miklosa = AWESOMENESS!!!
Great job maestro and Erika keep it up!
Without addressing the actual production the execution of vocals is SO ON POINT. I love how she makes it sound like worrying nagging instead of a pretty tune, but GODDAMN the control that takes.
Her vocal range and tempo are par excellence. Close your eyes you fool and travel to where you once were. This lady is just putting on a "demonstration" as to how truly incredible she really is. Do not hate, just enjoy the "spectacle" as Mozart originally intended. Amen.
Well.... the production is one thing, but that singing is in a class of its own. Crystal clear, virtuostic, fabulous tone and just stunning. I am in awe.
Knowing Mozart virtuosity this probably would be the closest version to wht the original would have been, amazing can t stop watching
She sing like the old style, I love it!!!!!
putting aside the ridiculousness of the show in general her vocals are seriously amazing, would love a studio recording of this.
I’m obsessed with this - what production is this? Erika is freaking perfect - so many talented women have sung this and they all deserve amazing credit but her acting and effortless way of hitting these notes takes the cake for me
Bravo Miklosa Erika
Erika's expressions and acting are AMAZING! Oh yeah, and her voice sounds pretty damn good too. What a performance.
2:04 she did that part seemingly so easy, she bearly open the mouth. In contrast with other singers, who often need different positions.
Brilliant voice and acting.
I LOVED IT! Erika's vocals were really impressive at that pace..... And the stage design was avant garde....... psychedelic, futuristic, surreal and frankly stunning...... I think it was all designed to drag the audience into the madness of it all................. Oh and I LOVED Erika running away at the end like Debbie Flintoff King lol lol x
Great voice. Awful production.
Many awful opera productions these days. No one writes great operas anymore, the last great one was written/performed in 1900 - Tosca. Opera companies keep performing the same ones over and over, so to continue to draw audiences they present new productions and try to "modernize" them. They usually fail.
the rest of the production is ok you can find it on youtube
... oui c’est à croire que les metteurs en scène sont vraiment frappés d’impuissance à respecter l’esprit d’un livret d’opéra !
why is the production so awful? i'm genuinely curious i'd be happy if someone could elaborate a little more, i've just recently gotten into musicals so yeah

I like her acting and the makeup
This is one of my favorite interpretation! For this powerful and kind of scary acting (which matches completly with the character), and at the same time a beautiful singing!
very weird representation. The daughter looks like a son and the queen is supposed to sing to her daugther. Hinging in the air???
Its german, they like to get their genders all mixed up and upside down to make it "edgy" and different.
^ no, apparently this version of the opera is supposed to be in the future
@@yep4924 Even though Star Wars is supposedly set "a long, long time ago", I was still disappointed to see her shove a normal dagger in her daughters' hand instead of a lightsaber one.

Wow, una de las dos mejores interpretaciones que he escuchado de esa Aria. Con un nivel de dramatismo y una técnica increíble. Una de mis piezas favoritas por la dificultad vocal y una hermosura inigualable. Gracias Mozart.
Amazing power... That woman can belt her drama right over the deep end...

One of the best performance ever of this aria. The mix of voice, acting and conduction is simply peerless! Great artist, absolutely great.
Definitely an avant-garde production! But her technique through those treacherous Coloratura passages was spot-on, in addition to fine acting!
This is incredibly good!
