it’s cause bastion is the only omnic who really had an actually knew of peace and knew torb couldve been his creator, plus theyre friendly with eachother
Some missed info (from a guy with an unhealthy interest in Overwatch lore): While Hammond did live a good life in Junkertown, his story first started on Horizon Lunar Colony, when Winston stole his rocket schematics and abandoned him. Hanzo had to carry the weight of an entire crime syndicate at an extremely young age, and ended up (almost) killing Genji. He didn't get kicked out, he left willingly, and also set down the blade in honour of Genji. Reinhardt joined Overwatch because he was keeping a promise to Balderich. He devoted his life to serving for Overwatch, becoming their shield, but when Overwatch disbanded, they literally kicked him out for being too old. He gave Overwatch everything, and they repaid him by removing him from the roster due to his age alone. Yes, Roadhog did help destroy the fusion core in Australia, but he doesn't suffer from that much pain, mainly due to Hogdrogen, which counteracts the effects of radiation. He gets his supply from Junkertown. Baptiste didn't quit Talon. He knew the only way anyone left talon is if they're dead, so he had to escape during a mission. He was caught by Mauga, but he let Baptiste go due to them being friends. Illari didn't just kill the sun people. She killed everyone. Every single person. She was singlehandedly responsible for the death of an entire civilization. That must be the biggest case of survivor's guilt ever recorded.
Reinhardt wasn’t kicked for his age. He was in charge of a hostage crisis in Paraguay that was done with mild reckless. Reinhardt prioritized saving as many hostages as possible, which did get almost everyone out alive. However, it lost a LOT of money for many big organizations, and since Overwatch was already in so much hot water at this point, they kicked Reinhardt to save face on the grounds of “forced retirement”
Plus symmetra doesn’t know the full story of vishkar. She just knows about some things of it being bad, but she is so manipulated on working for vishkar that she doesn’t care anymore
She actually could be going to his grave calling him a bunch of mean names for her successfully killing him lol, like: you’re nothing but a little ***** , you couldn’t even save me, you’re a failure. 😭
There may be a character who could (in theory) reverse moira's experiments on widow, our local monk, rammatra, you thought zenyatta didn't you? No, actually, if ram takes a brighter path he could help widow like zenyatta did with genji.
@@shroomyz5929yeah! She has a voice line in game like “I know that she’s still in there somewhere! If I could just run some tests…” when a Widow is on your team
Yea. He also mentions this to Winston in an interaction between them, and he definitely felt abandoned by his friend .Winston says that they were friends in horizon, Hammond, mentions the stolen rocket designs, but also asks if it was an accident when he left for Earth without him, in a sad tone.
@@buttercake-3215he didn't say it in a sad tone he said it like this: "Was it also an accident when you stole his (my) rocket design?" Meaning he is angry at winston
Ramattra's backstory has become something of a Greek Tragedy; he is a Dark Mirror of Zenyatta which is why there is so much Ying and Yang between them. What makes Ramattra's story so much sadder than Bastions is the fact that Bastion doesn't experience a quarter of the horrors Ramattra does, while Ramattra has experienced every horror Bastion has. The Ravagers were not just Omnic soldiers but Commanders on the battlefield made by Anubis. Although Ramattra once shunned this fact, he eventually comes around the liking it because it strikes fear into Humans that know of these "Squad Killers". After the Omnic War Ramattra had to flee and find refuge with Mondatta to escape the prosecution of his kind. Where Bastion units were destroyed and gotten rid of, Ravagers were alledgedly tortured and made to suffer at the hands of Humans due to their place during the war (Where they had no free will either). Because of this, Ramattra is also one of the last Ravagers in the world. He came to Mondata and the Shimbali looking for sanctuary as well as a place to help his fellow Omnics; he saw his kind suffering at the hands of Humans and with the omniums shut down there was no True way for Omnic-kind to reproduce; which means any casualty of an Omnic was irreplaceable and the population would forever decrease. Because of this fact, Ramattra turned against The Shimbali and his brother Zenyatta whom he loved deeply; all because of the fact the Shimbali sat on their hands and continued the slow attempt at peaceful integration all the while Ramattra watched omnics perish around him. He believed that he had to do something apprehensive in order to protect his entire race from being wiped out. So, Ramattra left and the next time we find him is when he is starting up what would become Null Sector. He met a group of like minded Omnics who shared his vision that he became very close to. They sought the freedom of Omnic Kind from Human savagery- planning to protect the omnics and rally them so they could stake their mark on the world. During the Null Sector Attack on London, they employed AI Robots (Not omnics, as Omnics are a different race in comparison to Robots) that were originally used in their assault. Ramattra had pushed the attack forward due to a lack of response to his cause by Omnics; believing that they needed to see that there was a chance at victory if they were to stand up. Against the wishes of the rest of the Null Sector leaders who wanted to improve the Robot forces that were by then dated, Ramattra initiated the assault on London which lead to the death of one of the Omnic Leaders and Null Sector being considered nothing more than terrorists. With the guilt of the fellow omnics death on his mind, Ramattra snapped here a bit. He took on the ideology that Omnics were so enthralled by humans and used to suffering that they now lacked the ability to even stand up for themselves. This wild ideology he had taken; morphed from years of hiding, disgruntlement, watching his fellow Omnics being oppressed and eradicated, and finally the death of a friend due to what he blamed to be the nature of Omnic Kind now, he deemed that he would have to be the one to fix it. He was abandoned by the rest of Null Sector that didn't agree with him. Now labelled a terrorist, too far gone to return to the Shimbali that openly opposed him and his group; his brother included, and with guilt weighing on his mind, he prepared to launch attacks across the world with plans of implementing mind probes into Omnics to force them to rise up. Ramattra, who was once a hopeful victim of war with compassion, empathy, and pain in his soul, went from a freedom fighter to enslaving those who he vowed to save. He's a Shakespearian Tagedy and I will die on that hill.
@@DestroyEvilCoTrust me man, I was suffering of inflammation with constant pain while others didnt care And feeling Constant pain makes you being angry, hateful and sad at all times. Some things you missed- -Torb does greive the people killed by the bastions -Hanzo had to deal with leading an entire crime organization -Not only did Mei have to deal with her colleagues deaths but struggling to survive in the Antarctic of all places -Tracer also had a few omnic friends and after the mondatta assassination one of her omnic friends was killed -Soilder also had to leave his bf and fake his death -Ana lost her husband, as well as finding out that widow (who was a good friend of hers) was brainwashed into being an assassin who killed Ana’s allies during the altercation that made her lose her eye. -Ball/Hammond was mistreated by the humans at the lunar colony along with his best friend (Winton) abandoning him while stealing his invention. -Speaking of Winton, he was clearly traumatized by the lunar colony incident and it’s indicated that he saw his handler get murdered
Has there been any indication of Hammond and Winston's relationship? I haven't really seen anything and now with role queue, having them on the same team together isn't common for in game interactions.
@@TegrresHammond seemingly has had alot of tweaks and possibly retcons for his story it’s kinda messy when you piece it together. Hammond and Winston were supposedly good friends on the colony which got confirmed during ow1 by outside sources and wasn’t referenced in game for years (unless you count a spray) until ow2 in a interaction were Hammond is bitter at Winston for apparently stealing his rocket design and leaving for earth without him, but like in his origin short he’s very clearly attaching himself to Winston’s escape pod and sneakily as well. Why not reveal himself to Winston if they were good friends? He’s also in plane sight, for Winston not to notice him they would have to not have interacted much. Also apparently Hammond’s identity as a hamster is common knowledge now? At least according to Junker Queen and her origin short where he’s just out in the open with Queen’s crew. I’m pretty sure they stressed back in the day that Hammond does NOT consider himself a junker and that no one knows of his true identity to keep in line with the idea that Hammond sees the Wrecking Ball identity as like a cool superhero alter ego. Yeah it didn’t make sense that a omnic hating society weren’t suspicious of a robot ball walking around and decimating everyone in the arena and refusing to reveal itself, but I still very much preferred the idea of Hammond keeping his identity secret
I don’t understand how Zenyatta could go in hopeful when one of his close friends became a genocidal monster and his mentor, who stood for everything the Omnic monks believed in, was assassinated.
Maybe it's because he seems to have found peace in-game. When he talks with Ramattra their interactions are mostly positive. I like the one where Zenyatta asks to share Ramattra's burden, and Ram says he already does.
Something important to keep in mind is that every current and former member of Overwatch has experienced war in some way and most likely have some form of ptsd, they have all either killed or watched people be killed with their own eyes
Mei easily deserves depressing. I think people get fooled by how sweet she is into thinking what she's gone through is less serious. But.. All of her friends are dead, she's stranded in the arctic and she realizes 9 years have passed. Everyone she knew has either forgotten her, barely remembers her, or has mourned her death and moved on. It's likely that none of them are even the same people she knew. If it weren't for her connections to Overwatch and Winston miraculously opening up the Overwatch channels again, she would've frozen to death after the remaining power died. But she's lucky enough to only have to trek through a frozen hell of -60°C for weeks to return to...what, exactly? Anything she owned would have been repossessed or in disrepair, she'd have to start her life over from absolutely nothing. Without her incredible luck, optimism, and determination, I can't imagine many people wouldn't have offed themselves. Though she's insanely lucky and amazing and just has to live with tons of trauma, mostly survivors guilt, having to rebuild her entire life while living in an age and culture mostly alien to her, and put in the middle of a world threatening war. I can't imagine that sort of stress.. She needs a hug, desperately.
You forgot the part where she probably CAN'T even start her life again from zero, if Null Sector didn't attack, she probably was gonna get back to society to immeadiately being arrested for her connections to Overwatch and her most likely desire to bring them back or carrying on the research they were doing before the disbanding. Even if she wasn't arrested, supposedly her research done in Antarctica "could save millions of lives" and she just may get withheld from that.
Some things to add because I like the lore too much lol: -Tracer had to live with the fact that Mondatta died because of HER. She even has a voiceline in the game about talking about how it should have been her. -Kiriko had her father kidnapped, the clan she grew up with destroyed, and her home taken over by the Hashimoto. Genji, a person she was very close with, is then rumoured to have died by the hands of another shimada brother she grew up with (Hanzo) and since she hasn’t seen either of them in the lore since childhood, she’s going have to find out the entire situation again (she’ll probably find out in the new short story book that’s coming out in march, where presumably hanzo and Kiriko meet each other fighting null sector in Tokyo) -Cassidy’s isn’t too depressing, but he was, like Genji, forced into blackwatch in exchange for something, in Cassidy’s case it was his criminal past. He was forced into an organization where killing was mandatory, he disagreed with a lot of overwatch’s decisions (Venice incident, “I’ll never forgive us for what we did in Hanamura” voiceline, etc.) so it’s a little more sad than usual I think. -Hanzo had to live with the fact that his brother was dead, then had to live with the fact that he didn’t die, but there was WAY more PTSD. His father was assassinated at a young age, then he had to immediately step in to lead the clan through a crisis, he had to grow up in a constant state of pressure, being the eldest son of a crime family, and he had to watch his family’s empire, and his father’s legacy crumble before him. And in the previously mentioned short story book coming in march, he may have to grapple with meeting Kiriko again, and explain where tf Genji is after all this time. These are just some points I made, but other than that great video!
Plus the thing about tracer is she could literally disappear out of time at any moment, plus since shes being held in the future timeline with her chrono accelerator, she will have to watch everyone else die while she doesnt even get a single wrinkle
Torbjorn did grieve about the fact that he helped create the bastion units (and other units, if i remember), there was a voice line in overwatch 1, where zarya constantly reminded him how much damage his creations caused to her country, and yeah he grieved about that
Torb just generally seems to be a "there are better things to do than be sad" character because I'm pretty sure when he was hospitalised he spent most of the time trying to get Rien to leave him alone and go help Overwatch to the point where he promised him the opportunity to name Brig
I was thinking the same thing. She had an interaction about it with another hero but I forgot who. She definitely feels remorse for not being able to stop widow.
For those who didn't know, I'm pretty sure it's mandatory for a vishkar architect to get a robotic arm Edit: Okay, turns out she's Just a amputee sorry that I got that wrong. If this is wrong, just know of got from the overwatch wiki
Important Mei more that I think everyone forgets, she made the cryofreeze devices. She blames herself for her friends’ deaths because she made the machines that killed them
Mei's kinda a hard one to place, she obviously grieved about her lost teammates, who she was very close with, and she also suffers from survivor's guilt, the idea that one did not deserve to survive where others died in the same way. and escaping from the run-down powerless station in Antarctica with only her drone for company is very stressful. regardless, she remains optimistic about her situation and uses these feelings as drive to complete the team's work. As for PTSD, it's an interesting case because while she does break down and cry when moira mentions the topic of cryostasis to her, she's also completely fine joking with mercy about how the secret to her youthful appearance is cryostasis. Also, she obviously utilizes cryostasis as her in-game shield ability, and expresses no distaste for doing so
That's what makes her so interesting her back story is basically would a set up for a villain like Mr. Freeze or someone who would be cold but would absolutely have a huge hatred for winter or anything to do with Ice, sort of line Simon from Adventure time after being the Ice king for so long. But Mei has that strength and will the take her problems and embrace them and make them her own. To me that's what a strong female character is, Not being the better than everyone but having the power to keep her inner demons in a tiny box.
Note: this comment is not meant to be mean, I’m just pointing a few things out: You missed a lot of key parts in hanzos backstory, that should have put him in depressing. He had to shoulder the weight of running a huge criminal organization by himself from a very young age. He then “killed” Genji and lived with that grief for years. He left the clan of his own accord (he wasn’t kicked out) and went to try and redeem himself. When he finally found out his brother was alive, that feeling probably was WORSE than grief. The person you dedicated your life to suddenly reappearing to you, and you realize everything you did for years was for nothing? It was horrible. Hanzo lost everything right after his dad died, and while trying to make up for it, he found out that he found out he didn’t lose everything, but that made him feel even emptier. Illari: she killed EVERYONE. Not just the sun people. Her entire civilization was wiped out because of her. I don’t need to say more. Top of depressed. Reinhardt: you missed a crucial thing that makes Reinhardt have the saddest backstory. You have to realize that because Reinhardt went in Balderich’s (his mentor) place, it was only because Balderich died. That made Reinhardt devote his life to Overwatch, to make up for the mistake he made when he was young in cocky. At the end of the first Overwatch, after everything he did for them in his years of service, they shunned him out. He gave everything, devoted his life, was the soul of it, and they just kicked him out bc he was old and things like that. Can you imagine dedicating your life to something just to be shunned out by everyone who was your friend? It’s horrible. He should easily be second of depressed, just above hanzo and right below illari.
When Soldier says part of himself died after the fight, he meant the part that considered himself a hero. He doesn’t consider himself a hero anymore, he’s just doing what he thinks is right without regard for himself or ethics.
Junkrat is genuinely depressing. He lost his parents, either in the omnic crisis or in the ensuing explosion of the Omnium. He grew up alone in Junkertown, with nothing but his fractured psyche and a growing obsession with explosives. He's injured himself with his own inventions, losing an arm and a leg, and managed to be exiled from his only home through little fault of his own. The only good thing he has is Roadhog, and I hope to the gods Overwatch chooses to expand upon their dynamic. Junkertown and its inhabitants have the least amount of lore and character buildup of any characters so far
There is even more to junkrat backstory, than what you said. First in ow2, we discover that he lost another finger. Also, we know that junkrat is actualy a really inteligent character, and he could have potentialy been a good engineer if he didn't grew up on the wastelands. He is mentally ill, but also pretty innocent in some sense, where he tries to be good to others and he kinda gets more hate than anything, which is kinda sad. We also know he has mommy issues, we don't know exactly what happened, but he has some lines referencing that. Also, in the junkbot skin, we see he has a jq sticker in a tire with a heart at its side, which could mean that he probably feels smth about her. Also, he is really protective of roadhog, since he is pretty much his only friend (he also calls him hoggie sometimes, as he said in one of his underworld voicelines). Tho, its not all bad, since it seems he has been getting a bit better with the transition to ow2. He has grown more hair, and he seems to be doing a little bit better that he used to. Still, poor junkrat man
I have a theory that Junkrat was just extremely affected by the wastelands to the point of memory loss and Roadhog was just a friend/family of his past and thats why he sticks around instead of leaving him.
Personally, I feel Echo should be moved up a little because her ability to mimic people carried over a lot of her creator’s, Mina Liao’s, traits due to her extensive time developing Echo. When her creator died, from Echo’s perspective it must’ve been like seeing herself die. Not to mention how she was effectively decommissioned after the fact for fear of her existence.
The thing about reapers chronic pain is that his cells are constantly decaying and regenerating at a rapid rate. So think about you kinda just sitting there and your flesh is rotting away then scabbing up constantly. Not like one after the other but just all at once all the time. Pretty wild stuff.
I would personally move Mercy a lot higher. Mercy invented her healing tech and she only wanted it to be used for good before people in Overwatch stole and changed her tech to take lives(Example: Ana’s sniper uses her tech and I think the same is with Moira). So just image loosing your parents and becoming orphaned, only wanting to help save the world you create this technology that seemingly can cure all wounds only for it to be stolen and used to kill idk how many people.
Yeah I'd argue that his story is sad, although less than other characters in perspective. He probably was orphaned/lost family to the Crisis (like many people tbf), had to work some physically demanding jobs to survive as he was barely a teen (I think he was around 15 when he joined the Deadlock Rebels), was played by and betrayed by a friend (Julian) which almost led to his death by an enemy gang (the Diamondbacks), then got recruited into the Deadlock Rebels by Ashe with the idea that it was just a 3-months long thing. But Ashe just loved the high of robbing stuff and continued on (on top of melting their gains to bail herself out of jail and make them start all over again). Point taken, he kept doing it until he got caught, but Ana says at some point that he felt "stuck" there and he just jumped to another forced choice (Blackwatch or jail). Most of his Blackwatch missions were failures, he barely escaped death and saw colleagues and friends die in the Olso facility bombing and Zurich HQ bombing and other attacks against Overwatch (Dr Mina Liao, Jack, Gabriel, Gérard Lacroix etc). He then went on to be a vigilante and an alcoholic, and Ana managed to recruit him back again for Overwatch 2.0 but he still expresses how it's just one of the least bad options for him in various voicelines, and he also expresses how he still feels like he doesn't belong in there. Cassidy's tragedy as a character is that it feels like everyone has made choices for him throughout his life, and he just gave up on making them for himself, and also he's put faith in the wrong people throughout his life.
just something to add to torb's lore, he didnt just help creating the bastion units, he also helped with creating the titans and does feel guilt about it i havent finished the video yet but it looks great so far gj on it dude👍
I think Reaper's is more depressing than you expressed as you made it seem like he could return to life again after killing 76, but this is not the case, because it is heavily implied that he suffered severe physical disfigurement from his battle in Switzerland as well as from the experiments that cause him to be immortal and to be in constant agony. He constantly references and states how he wants to die (though not as much as he wants 76 to die). And he cannot contact his family due to the disfigurement, assumption that he is dead, and the horrible things he's done since. There's even an interaction where he tells Widowmaker that his wife would likely try to kill him if she saw him again. This leads to him stalking his family in his free time and watching them build lives for themselves that he is forced to be absent from. I honestly think his story is on par with Widow's in most respects in terms of depressing.
Agreed, Reaper is a victim of many characters who practically possess some form of immortality or healing factor, Reaper is already in physical and emotional pain, playing the role of Death, him having one leg in the land of the living, and another in the land of the dead, the worse thing about suicide and wanting to die is that you are unable to die, not because you don’t have the will to do it, but because you lack the power to successfully do it, especially with immortality and shit.
im a little confused on mercys placement in relation to baptiste theyre very similar characters mercy was also orphaned in the crisis, overwatch went behind her back and unconsentually used her research and tech in weapons and developed ways to harm people with it even though she was very vocal about not wanting her tech to be put into bad use (anas rifle, and its hinted that moira took some of her research into her own, maybe soldiers thing too but im not entirely sure on that) after a campaign mission or two you also unlock her journal where its heavily hinted at that she has some form of depression from late night emergency shifts at hospitals and just everything in her life in general and has just essentially lost her spark for life, and she also talks about how out of place and "older" she feels to all the recall members including and "especially" reinhardt
I’d like to add Venture since they’re new to the roster: They go in hopeful. Literally nothing bad happened to them in their backstory, except maybe the fact that they saw artifacts be mishandled. Also, I would put Sigma in a tier all his own. Like a “Oh my god what the fu-“ tier. But that’s probably just me
Mei is really depressing, it isn't just survivors guilt, she created the cryo pods that killed everybody she worked with, and the one she got in just happened to work.
You missed a key part of Wrecking Ball's backstory Winston, his only friend with whom he grew up in Horizon together and who was like a brother to him, betrayed him. Winston stole Hammond's rocket designs and left Horizon for Earth without him, leaving Hammond behind. Hammond had his mech's prototype and managed to grapple the launchpod in which Winston took off but the claw broke in the atmosphere and Hammond landed in Junkertown, where as Winston landed at Watchpoint Gibraltar. Eventually Hammond would perfect his mech and become the Champion of Junkertown, but he still remembers that day Winston backstabbed him There's a voiceline interaction between the two and it's easily one of the saddest in the game, look up "overwatch sad voice interactions" This puts Wrecking Ball at least in "Very Sad" in my opinion
Another thing to mention who it Soldier is the fact that his career as an Overwatch Agent/Soldier in the military drove his then boyfriend off, something that clearly still hurts judging from Ana’s short story/comic. It’s not like major, but I still think it’s worth mentioning.
I can also tell you that Ramattra almost got killed and almost lost his brother Zenyatta due to humans. The humans almost killed them, there’s some facts for ya. It even talks a little bit about it in his comic lore :3
I would put Dva over echo bc in the cinematic it’s clear that Dva has ptsd and no one knows the real her as the news would lie that she wasn’t injuries, downplaying her struggles to raise morale. Also I’m in love with the Detroit become human music in the bg
Cassidy's is way sadder. He got coerced into joining a black ops division when he was a child (17), he had Mina Liao die on him, his friend who he watched be created (Echo) was put on ice, his home was torn apart by in-fighting and he left, he spend 5 years basically wandering around with no goal or attachments, and he lost his arm, plus all the shit he must have seen as part of Blackwatch.
I remember way back like around launch, Reaper and Soldier 76’s identities were supposed to be a mystery but then they got their past skins as pre order bonuses 😂
The thing that makes Cassidy’s story sad I’d say is that he got his arm ripped by bob as noted by Ashe as she threatened bob to rip off his other arm as his other arm has the deadlock gang tattoo probably as a sign of Ashe implicating he’s no longer of the gang Cassidy also had to deal with how the old members of overwatch got into an argument leading to the alleged deaths of 76 and reaper but instead of choosing a side he goes his own way being alone and since then before the recall by Winston he’s been on his own doing his own things and drinking in bars where even sombra would randomly appear Cassidy also regrets his life of being an agent as he got older realizing how much he missed being a farmer with his family currently in the present of overwatch Ana gave Cassidy the role of the new leader for overwatch as he didn’t choose a side and staying level headed while I can’t say that part of his story is sad what’s sad about him is that he basically lost his overwatch family until the new team came to be
Widowmaker: Was the Lily on Gerard's grave yours ? Solider: You known we were close.. Widowmaker: Not close enough to known he preferred roses. Widowmaker have by far the most depressing backstory, even if Reaper and Sigma's actual lifes are worse
"Nothing sad has happened to Mcree" *Meanwhile, cuts to Mcole Mcassidy with his whole arm missing. Trying to outperform Luke skywalker in the terms of robotic appendages*
"It's just a villain arc of 'someobody having a huge passion, finding what he loves, and going villain mode over it.'" Bro predicted Mauga lore before Mauga was out
Wait i just realized a fatal flaw in overwatches narrative, if the whole point of null sector and ramatra is to protect omnics because they cannot be made again.Hence him saying “finite numbers and my species cannot reproduce”…. What up with orisa?, she was made waaaaaaay later than the omnics that got conciusness spawned from aurura. Before this event robots were just that, emotionless robots. The rest of the omnic cast all existed at the time of the event, be it echo in a box and bastion rusting in a forest. But where there. Orisa by story logic shouldnt be like other omnics. Efi made her but the or-15s where not omnics, where just police robots. Orisa doesnt have “a soul” (which explains a lot lol) so either efi by a miracle found the way to make new omnics or orisa is just an emotionless machine made to act like it has feelings.
weird comment: but i really appreciate you using Kara's main theme from Detroit: Become Human. It's easily one of the greatest soundtrack pieces symbolizing the feelings of grief and trauma. I don't know if you or your editor picked it, but great choice whoever it was :)
Kiriko should be higher, her father got kidnapped, he lost probably her best friend Genji as she witnessed her clan fall and watched how his town go harrased by Hashimoto.
for ram -Last of kind -Studied peace for years just to show it wont work -had to leave his only friend(zen) to try and make piece -always being hunted down by the world being the leader of null sector -has to deal with, that even some omics don't like his methods -racism -Before null sector was big, he was protecting omics' from humans -not just build for war but was a war commander (ravagers where meant to be like omnic generals) - and is now fighting the world for robot rights due to traumatization :D
Torbjörn didnt want to make the robots AI so advanced, and tried to warn the people where it would lead but they didnt listen to him and he had to made them.
Orisa has very little memory of when she was destroyed. And when they were OR15s they had zero empathy and would ignore the injured or dying and go straight for the threat. Efi is the one that programmed her with empathy. Cassidy has been on the run since OW disbanded. Wrecking Ball was good friends with Winston and harbors resentment towards him for nearly leaving him on the lunar colony. Winston not only lost his father figure, but his love interest in the uprising. Torb knows his creations were used for evil. He doesn't trust Orisa right away because she was based on one of his models.
I'm still hoping to see a show like Arcane for OW, like no need to show all the characters, i think Widowmaker story and how she got captured by Talon and brainwashed her is enough to make a really good drama show.
I loved the video and I don't know why I felt the urge to comment this 'cause I've never commented something this long under a video but anyway, here's things I'd change or have to add: Tracer - Almost getting killed by Widowmaker wasn't the most depressing part of that for her. She failed in defending an omnic who was helping with the relationship between humans and omnics so she was heartbroken. [Still Kind of Sad] Lucio - Vishkar stole his dead dad's life work also they want to ruin his hometown to "make it better" [Up to Sad or Very Sad] Ana - Shouldn't be at the bottom of Very Sad because she regrets most of her life, basically. She's just jaded. She regrets killing people, she abandoned her family, which she regrets very much, her daughter is a soldier, which she doesn't like at all, because she doesn't want Pharah to end up like her (regretting her whole life), she sees her close friend pushing himself to his limit by fighting a lot (Reinhardt) and much more. She disagrees with the things she's doing, but she's doing it because the end goal is peace so it weighs more on her. Also, she's constantly talking about wanting to rest and go on vacation, but she's still fighting for what's right, which must drain her a lot. [Up to Depressing] Doomfist - Although I agree with your points, I don't think he should be that high up. I think he's on par with Zarya, maybe a bit sadder, but not as sad as Ana or Torb so far. [Down to Sad] Mercy - She's a war medic as well so that'd make her story sadder because she probably watched a lot of people die and probably blamed herself for it (Although that's just me speculating because idk it feels like something that happens to war medics), but I think her story is not as sad as some others on this list. [Down to Sad] Sombra - Losing her parents is sad, but I don't think "growing up with the wrong people" is tbf. 'Cause to her, it's not the wrong people. She kinda loves what she's doing and she mostly focuses on herself so I don't think she regrets anything, but idk. [Down to Sad] Ashe - Kinda similar to Sombra [Down to Sad] Mei & Genji - You basically said everything for them but our opinion on the severity of some situations is different so idk haha [Up to nonexistent tier between Very Sad and Depressing lol] Illari and Widowmaker - Imagine DIRECTLY killing all of the people you looked up to and wanted to join. They were literally her family and she killed them. And for Widow, she was ripped from the only things she loved in life and destroyed them directly too + got brainwashed. Those two deserve their own highest tier that should be called "Chronic uncurable clinical depression" 😭
something to note about mei, since juno is coming tomorrow we now know that on top of her losing 9yrs of her life and all her friends, she also lost her sister who is now suck on mars or dead
22:00 Although it may not seem like it, Sigma is absolutely broken inside. He seems to have developed some form of multiple personality disorder due to the gravitational accident and goes from being a nice, calm person to being completely aggressive. That's why in its trailer you can hear phrases like "Now with this experiment I can achieve *VIOLENCE* " and his normal, calm voice is interrupted by that sudden change and it's sad because you can see him having very normal conversations with the heroes of Overwatch. Usually the personality change comes when he hears melodies in his head. Even gameplay wise sometimes you can see that change in his personality. His head is so strange because in the black hole accident it seems, according to conversations with Zenyatta, it seems that he saw the goddess Iris. The most disturbing thing is that she is a being that cannot be "seen" as such because she is a god who is everywhere and can't be in an specific place... The fact that Sigma told Zenyatta as if nothing had happened that he met the Iris left him frankly a little surprised... We don't know if he genuinely saw the Iris or interacting with a black hole in such an extreme way made him believe that.
Hammond was abandoned by Winston, his best friend on Horizon. Never fully bonded with Winston again. But still just kinda sad but I just wanted to fill in.
torb does grief about the bastion units in an interaction with zarya symmetra is missing an arm as all vishkar architects ampute an arm to make way for a prosthetic capable of generating hardlight, lifeweaver has his right arm amputated.
I feel like junkrats is overlooked because he has no explored backstory, he has a lot of voicelines refering to his mom, wich apparently has passed away, wich is sad because I think the one in wich he sobs is from ow1, in wich he is 25, it also adds to the sadness the fact that he is a genious, he's extremely smart, and that is constantly shown, his life was screwed from the start and he never had a chance, but if he had, he could have been someone great
Extra info: according to his bio on the overwatch blizzard page, Roadhog lost his humanity (even though he is with Junkrat rn) so he's in a similar situation to Junkrat (unless it was a metaphor)
honestly zenyatta deserves his own tier of "mystery" we know so little of his backstory, we dont know where he came from, what did he do before shambali all we know is that he randomly met ramattra, joined shambali, helped genji and thats kinda it
yup. Seems like, once they reach a certain point in their time as an Employee, they have their arms replaced with cybernetics to improve their work. I guess the fully cybernetic arm is more effective than the glove Symmetra uses in her Vishkar skin. I cant say if that's truly the reason, but the fact that the only 2 playable characters connected to Vishkar are both missing an arm, and that arm does all the work when manipulating light, makes me believe that's the case.
I like the idea of the list but thinking “oh they are doing ok now” doesn’t mean the characters story isn’t tragic or depressing just doesn’t work for me. Sym’s story for example, having to abandon your family and to sell out to corporate greed to not starve to death sounds depressing to me.
torb is still chasing his old creation like we saw in the comics and they base is junkenstein version on this, he feels very guilty for what he has done, he joined overwatch just for that
I would bump Genji down to kind of sad because after his time in Blackwatch, he got picked up by Zenyatta and Zenyatta helped him through a lot and made him feel more human again.
4:14 You are excluding the things she must have witnessed while trapped in time, unable to do anything about any of the suffering that was happening and probably treated as an evil spirit
Torb definitely attempted to atone for his role in making the bastions and the titan robots. In the comics, he talks about the impact his creations had on the world, and in Declassified, it talks about how he was basically the only expert Overwatch had on the bastion and titan designs. He also lost a friend of his in the Ironclad Guild, and spoke about her publicly after her death, so he definitely mourned her. Also, I think losing an arm and basically being trauma bonded to your friend is quite tragic. As for Moira, I do think your assessment of her choosing her life and being happy with it is true. However, in her early career, if she hadn’t been picked up by Overwatch, she would’ve had nowhere to go. Her scientific paper, which got her put on a blacklist in the scientific community when it was supposed to jump-start her career, was probably a low point in her life. She was also rejected by Overwatch’s medical team, which had to at least sting, since she was abandoned by her place of employment. I do think a lot of people see Moira as psychopathic, but I don’t personally see her that way. She doesn’t do the things she does with the intention to hurt people (discounting in-game actions, and remembering that Blackwatch was killing by necessity only). She HAS hurt people, but it’s in the name of progress, and her own personal goals. It’s not because she wants to torture people for fun. At least, that’s not how I see it.
One in game detail I noticed is Bastion sometimes makes sad beeps if you kill a Torbjorn.
It sounds like he's actually crying
He'll do the same if he's killing Brig too

Some missed info (from a guy with an unhealthy interest in Overwatch lore):
While Hammond did live a good life in Junkertown, his story first started on Horizon Lunar Colony, when Winston stole his rocket schematics and abandoned him.
I'm curious about Baptiste and Mauga interactions
Didn’t roadhog have a daughter that died?
@@Jarubimba
Mauga and baptiste had a dispute and Baptiste almost killed mauga before escaping.
Widowmaker still has some emotion left in her, as seen in the comics where it's revealed that she visits her husband's grave every year.

She actually could be going to his grave calling him a bunch of mean names for her successfully killing him lol, like: you’re nothing but a little ***** , you couldn’t even save me, you’re a failure. 😭

Yea. He also mentions this to Winston in an interaction between them, and he definitely felt abandoned by his friend .Winston says that they were friends in horizon, Hammond, mentions the stolen rocket designs, but also asks if it was an accident when he left for Earth without him, in a sad tone.
@@buttercake-3215he didn't say it in a sad tone he said it like this: "Was it also an accident when you stole his (my) rocket design?" Meaning he is angry at winston
it's sad because they were friends and winston basically stole from him, betrayed their friendship and just abandonned him
Ramattra's backstory has become something of a Greek Tragedy; he is a Dark Mirror of Zenyatta which is why there is so much Ying and Yang between them.

Some things you missed-
-Torb does greive the people killed by the bastions
-Hanzo had to deal with leading an entire crime organization
-Not only did Mei have to deal with her colleagues deaths but struggling to survive in the Antarctic of all places
-Tracer also had a few omnic friends and after the mondatta assassination one of her omnic friends was killed
-Soilder also had to leave his bf and fake his death
-Ana lost her husband, as well as finding out that widow (who was a good friend of hers) was brainwashed into being an assassin who killed Ana’s allies during the altercation that made her lose her eye.
I haven't really seen anything and now with role queue, having them on the same team together isn't common for in game interactions.
im also pretty sure soldier has cybernetic legs

Relax, she's fictional 🫂
She was sleepy
Cool, I hope she suffers more
..... I wish she didn't
Some things to add because I like the lore too much lol:
-Tracer had to live with the fact that Mondatta died because of HER. She even has a voiceline in the game about talking about how it should have been her.
-Kiriko had her father kidnapped, the clan she grew up with destroyed, and her home taken over by the Hashimoto. Genji, a person she was very close with, is then rumoured to have died by the hands of another shimada brother she grew up with (Hanzo) and since she hasn’t seen either of them in the lore since childhood, she’s going have to find out the entire situation again (she’ll probably find out in the new short story book that’s coming out in march, where presumably hanzo and Kiriko meet each other fighting null sector in Tokyo)
-Cassidy’s isn’t too depressing, but he was, like Genji, forced into blackwatch in exchange for something, in Cassidy’s case it was his criminal past.
"being held in the future timeline" what does that mean? @@travioliraviolicanoli
Torbjorn did grieve about the fact that he helped create the bastion units (and other units, if i remember), there was a voice line in overwatch 1, where zarya constantly reminded him how much damage his creations caused to her country, and yeah he grieved about that
Exactly a problem i have with this dudes channel is that he doesn't take the time to do basic research

Torb just generally seems to be a "there are better things to do than be sad" character because I'm pretty sure when he was hospitalised he spent most of the time trying to get Rien to leave him alone and go help Overwatch to the point where he promised him the opportunity to name Brig
Tracer should IMO be higher since she blames herself (somewhat correctly) for the assassination of Mondatta.

No, I'm pretty sure in one of the lore pieces for Sym, it says she CHOSE to get the arm removed and replaced with a robotic one.
Zens backstory also includes being forced to slaughter humans against his will and his mentor dying.
Note: this comment is not meant to be mean, I’m just pointing a few things out:
You missed a lot of key parts in hanzos backstory, that should have put him in depressing.
Im not reading all that!

You connecting with sojourn warmed my heart it was sweet🤧
Cassidy is either sad or kinda sad bc the one person he protected got assassinated
I'm pretty sure in the novel Deadlock Rebels, cree is presumed to be an orphan because of the crisis
@subtoadphe is bing chilling?
Cassidy's tragedy as a character is that it feels like everyone has made choices for him throughout his life, and he just gave up on making them for himself, and also he's put faith in the wrong people throughout his life.
just something to add to torb's lore, he didnt just help creating the bastion units, he also helped with creating the titans and does feel guilt about it
i havent finished the video yet but it looks great so far gj on it dude👍
Winton sitting alone in Gibraltar making recall videos and thinking nobody will respond is pretty sad, dawg
Im pretty sure Kiriko's dad was kidnapped when she was young
I think Sigma should be higher on the list, but otherwise I think you did an amazing job on this tier list and I hope to see more in the future
im a little confused on mercys placement in relation to baptiste
theyre very similar characters
mercy was also orphaned in the crisis, overwatch went behind her back and unconsentually used her research and tech in weapons and developed ways to harm people with it even though she was very vocal about not wanting her tech to be put into bad use (anas rifle, and its hinted that moira took some of her research into her own, maybe soldiers thing too but im not entirely sure on that)
after a campaign mission or two you also unlock her journal where its heavily hinted at that she has some form of depression from late night emergency shifts at hospitals and just everything in her life in general and has just essentially lost her spark for life, and she also talks about how out of place and "older" she feels to all the recall members including and "especially" reinhardt
i think he ranked it cause bap was younger
“Brainwashed to feel nothing unless she is killing.”
Butcher’s Nails: BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD
I’d like to add Venture since they’re new to the roster:
They go in hopeful. Literally nothing bad happened to them in their backstory, except maybe the fact that they saw artifacts be mishandled.
Also, I would put Sigma in a tier all his own. Like a “Oh my god what the fu-“ tier. But that’s probably just me
I just realised Efi was the second person to create a sentient omnic
Mei is really depressing, it isn't just survivors guilt, she created the cryo pods that killed everybody she worked with, and the one she got in just happened to work.
Caught me off guard with the "She nuked a lot of people" xD
You missed a key part of Wrecking Ball's backstory
Winston, his only friend with whom he grew up in Horizon together and who was like a brother to him, betrayed him. Eventually Hammond would perfect his mech and become the Champion of Junkertown, but he still remembers that day Winston backstabbed him
There's a voiceline interaction between the two and it's easily one of the saddest in the game, look up "overwatch sad voice interactions"
This puts Wrecking Ball at least in "Very Sad" in my opinion
Another thing to mention who it Soldier is the fact that his career as an Overwatch Agent/Soldier in the military drove his then boyfriend off, something that clearly still hurts judging from Ana’s short story/comic. It’s not like major, but I still think it’s worth mentioning.
11:38 "Mercy was an orphan, haha!"💀
All the Omnics were slaves--first to humanity, then to Anubis. THAT'S depressing.
Putting rein , Hanso , gengi and soldier below junkrat and hog is a crime . Those 2 are insane but all of these people lost someone very dear to them
The thing that makes Cassidy’s story sad I’d say is that he got his arm ripped by bob as noted by Ashe as she threatened bob to rip off his other arm as his other arm has the deadlock gang tattoo probably as a sign of Ashe implicating he’s no longer of the gang Cassidy also had to deal with how the old members of overwatch got into an argument leading to the alleged deaths of 76 and reaper but instead of choosing a side he goes his own way being alone and since then before the recall by Winston he’s been on his own doing his own things and drinking in bars where even sombra would randomly appear Cassidy also regrets his life of being an agent as he got older realizing how much he missed being a farmer with his family currently in the present of overwatch Ana gave Cassidy the role of the new leader for overwatch as he didn’t choose a side and staying level headed while I can’t say that part of his story is sad what’s sad about him is that he basically lost his overwatch family until the new team came to be
13:00 Symmetras arm was ampuated in vishkar, just like lifeweavers
One thing to note about Tracer is that she blames herself for Mondatta’s death and wishes she got shot instead. Which i’d say is pretty sad
Widowmaker: Was the Lily on Gerard's grave yours ?
Solider: You known we were close..
Widowmaker: Not close enough to known he preferred roses.
Widowmaker have by far the most depressing backstory, even if Reaper and Sigma's actual lifes are worse
MEI LITRALLY LOST ALL HER COLEEGES AND HAS TO LIVE WITH SURVIVORS GUILT BECUSE OF IT… LIKE SHE LOST HER FAMILY…. AND LOST 9 YEARS OF HER LIFE….
At 3:50 are we goin to talk about how he life gripped bastion through the wall?
Wait what the fuck
HOW!? 💀
There was a veeery small gap. You can see bastion go AROUND the wall if you look a little closer.
Caught me off guard at first 😂
"Nothing sad has happened to Mcree"
*Meanwhile, cuts to Mcole Mcassidy with his whole arm missing.
"Mercy: This is not what I intended for you, Reyes. Reaper: You knew exactly what you were doing."
weird comment: but i really appreciate you using Kara's main theme from Detroit: Become Human.
Moira doesn't have a depressing backstory. She MAKES depressing backstories!
On Moira's case to be a saddening note. She infected herself with whatever she experiments with, so she is slowly dying
for ram
-Last of kind
-Studied peace for years just to show it wont work
-had to leave his only friend(zen) to try and make piece
-always being hunted down by the world being the leader of null sector
-has to deal with, that even some omics don't like his methods
-racism
-Before null sector was big, he was protecting omics' from humans
-not just build for war but was a war commander (ravagers where meant to be like omnic generals)
- and is now fighting the world for robot rights due to traumatization :D
Wrecking Ball has a slightly more sad backstory than you let on. Some of his voice lines talk about how the experiments on him were very painful
He had a short story recently where he flashbacks to him watching the treatments fail on his family, killing them
Torbjörn didnt want to make the robots AI so advanced, and tried to warn the people where it would lead but they didnt listen to him and he had to made them.
u can tell u put alot of effort and research into this, even though I didn't agree much but I also haven't read as much as you so good video
Roadhog also cares about the lowering number of good people too, as seen in the comic where he meets junk
Man i forgot how depressing this lore is
Orisa has very little memory of when she was destroyed.
I love how in the overwatch world Australia is just like that
Wrecking ball is not the Queen's bodyguard he's the gladiatorial champion
how come nothing happened to cass? are we not considering the blackwatct incident
I think soldier 76 is reffering to whatever they "pumped into him". Its in a certain character interaction voiceline which i dont remember
I could stop laughing at 12:15 because u just see Hammonds body drop from the sky on the floor
I loved the video and I don't know why I felt the urge to comment this 'cause I've never commented something this long under a video but anyway, here's things I'd change or have to add:
Tracer - Almost getting killed by Widowmaker wasn't the most depressing part of that for her. She failed in defending an omnic who was helping with the relationship between humans and omnics so she was heartbroken. [Still Kind of Sad]
Lucio - Vishkar stole his dead dad's life work also they want to ruin his hometown to "make it better" [Up to Sad or Very Sad]
Ana - Shouldn't be at the bottom of Very Sad because she regrets most of her life, basically. [Up to Depressing]
Doomfist - Although I agree with your points, I don't think he should be that high up. I think he's on par with Zarya, maybe a bit sadder, but not as sad as Ana or Torb so far. [Down to Sad]
Mercy - She's a war medic as well so that'd make her story sadder because she probably watched a lot of people die and probably blamed herself for it (Although that's just me speculating because idk it feels like something that happens to war medics), but I think her story is not as sad as some others on this list. [Down to Sad]
Sombra - Losing her parents is sad, but I don't think "growing up with the wrong people" is tbf. 'Cause to her, it's not the wrong people. She kinda loves what she's doing and she mostly focuses on herself so I don't think she regrets anything, but idk. [Down to Sad]
Ashe - Kinda similar to Sombra [Down to Sad]
Mei & Genji - You basically said everything for them but our opinion on the severity of some situations is different so idk haha [Up to nonexistent tier between Very Sad and Depressing lol]
Illari and Widowmaker - Imagine DIRECTLY killing all of the people you looked up to and wanted to join.
22:00
Although it may not seem like it, Sigma is absolutely broken inside.
Hamond got left behind by his only friend who mind you stole his blueprints for an escape ship
torb does grief about the bastion units in an interaction with zarya
symmetra is missing an arm as all vishkar architects ampute an arm to make way for a prosthetic capable of generating hardlight, lifeweaver has his right arm amputated.
As an Australian I can confirm, growing up was depressing
Ball did say to mercy his experiment was painful and they didn't care for him so yeah thats very sad asf
I feel like junkrats is overlooked because he has no explored backstory, he has a lot of voicelines refering to his mom, wich apparently has passed away, wich is sad because I think the one in wich he sobs is from ow1, in wich he is 25, it also adds to the sadness the fact that he is a genious, he's extremely smart, and that is constantly shown, his life was screwed from the start and he never had a chance, but if he had, he could have been someone great
Extra info: according to his bio on the overwatch blizzard page, Roadhog lost his humanity (even though he is with Junkrat rn) so he's in a similar situation to Junkrat (unless it was a metaphor)
honestly zenyatta deserves his own tier of "mystery"
we know so little of his backstory, we dont know where he came from, what did he do before shambali
all we know is that he randomly met ramattra, joined shambali, helped genji and thats kinda it
I haven't played OW2 in months out of necessity. Still I love the lore, and try to keep up with it. Now that's depressing.
Lifeweaver and Sym both have robotic arms because it's a thing they have to do in vishkar, right?
In OW1, there were voice lines of Torb regretting for what he did. There’s even a voice line where torb tells bastión to fuck off.
12:25 Symmetra most likely had her arm amputated at Vishkar in order to get her light-bending prosthetic. It’s the same for life-weaver.
From what I remember, the thing on Symmetra's left arm is actually a glove.
What are you saying my guy? Mei is easily a depressing. She literally aged 9 years. I wish I couldnt 😭😭
Hammond was left behind by winston, which hammond was probably sad about it
4:14 You are excluding the things she must have witnessed while trapped in time, unable to do anything about any of the suffering that was happening and probably treated as an evil spirit
Reinhardt also lost a number of friends at Eichenwalde. I believe in fact that he's the only crusader who made it out alive
Ah yes, Overwatch, the game and universe about being a hero who brings hope to the world.
