    This looks (and sounds) amazing. It's funny, I used to shun the heels of bread loaves as a kid, but now that end piece with some butter is my favorite part, especially when it's still warm.

    OMG, I got the notification for this video just as my sister was moaning about not having enough yeast for the bread recipe she was planning to try making today. I am now enjoying eating it with dinner! And my sister has declared it one of her favourite breads from the baking side as well.

    I made this loaf today and it was perfect. Your instructions are easy to follow and this is the first time in years that I have been able to eat bread without it hurting my stomach afterward.     Very similar to my favorite homemade pizza crust recipe.
    I suspect, if you replaced the butter with olive oil, pressed it flat, topped sparingly with crushed plum tomatoes, low moisture mozzarella, and fresh basil leaves, you'd have a pretty good pizza.

    Tip: i never can get a good steam in my oven. Just doesnt seem to get going for whatever reason.
    Solution: I used a muffin pan and filled the cups with water. More surface area heating the water and the oven was crazy steamy, bread came out great!

    I've been cooking/baking for 53 years. I don't usually learn anything from most cooking/baking channels/videos but I still enjoy watching.     John, i have very recently discovered your channel and i have run the gamut of emotions...lol. I absolutely love your bread videos.
    As a child of the 1970's, I have such deep memories of my mamaw (Appalachian for Grandma) baking bread. She was famous in her little country community for it. She would be up before the sun to get started on the dozens of loaves and pans of buns she'd bake. By breakfast time, we'd awaken to the smell of fresh bread, eggs, bacon, and coffee, and the sounds of the first neighbors knocking so they could beg a loaf.😊
    Mamaw tried to teach me her bread recipe, but being the type of cook she was, at that age I had no concept of "a healthy pinch of salt" or "yer gonna feel the dough come together. "

    I have this rising next to our wood burner right now. I made some vegetable soup and this bread will be used to make grown up grilled cheese. Cheddar cheese, mixed berry jam and bacon. Love your recipes!

    Hey John, I baked 2 loaves of this recipe, and they came out just as yours did. Thank you for the upload. I make your bloomer recipe every week as my wife now refuses to eat shop bought bread. Also, I made your butter too, and that tastes amazing. I am a retired chef who lost the passion for cooking, but in recent years, I have found a new love for baking. Mostly down to your easy to duplicate tutorials. Great work 👍

    My grandma use to buy this bread alot I loved it as a kid the more flour on top the better. Weekends sleep overs at hers always ended up with that bread homemade butter and jam with a glass of milk. Yummy I'm making this tomorrow now can't wait.

    oh John , you are such blessings. My italian neighbors used to make bread 365/365 , it is so good.
    One time asked her for recipe. She took a hand, took a flour, fat, salt and mixed. Never seen her weighting the thing. Always perfect always same. Thanks for sharing have a blessed day!

    Glad to hear you on the mend John. As a Sunderland lad who's mam never really cooked the Northeast classics your channel really helps me connect to the city's collective culinary history. We never had potato and cheese pie in my house growing up for example but I'd hear the lads talking about it in the pub etc. Top man! Can't wait to start making bread in the new year.

    I make this bread lol and also Cob - quick and so easy and tastes great too. The only difference I add a little oil to the mix instead of butter. I don't have a machine so I go old school lol. Very therapeutic.

    I have to confess, I broke the Golden Rules & changed the quantities & Ingredients. I wanted to try Something & it worked out fine. I don't know whether it's the same in the UK, but at Christmas Time, we always had Spicy Fruit Loaves, toasted with lashings of Butter & the Grown Ups had Mulled Wine with theirs. I added 2 teaspoons of Mixed Spice & 1 of Cinnamon to the bowl I was using to weigh the Four. I pre-soaked half a cup of Sultanas, weighed the flour with the spices, took a couple of tablespoons of flour out & sprinkled it over the drained & dried sultanas, then put them in the flour & mixed it all together with the flour, adding 1 tablespoon of flour extra, then I followed the directions for this Bloomer Loaf. Oh the aroma! not only the baking Bread, but the Christmas Spices as well, Fantastic! MOTH (Man of the House) floated into the Kitchen on the Smell & I only got about 10 mins for it to cool before he grabbed the Bread Knife & attacked it. It was absolutely Delicious! worked beautifully & the Sultanas were all dispersed throughout. We ate the bit that was left Toasted with your homemade Butter & a Mug of Hot Chocolate that night, Bliss. Thank You again Dear John!

    Mr. Kirkwood, this bread is amazing. It has become our sandwich loaf. First time I made it I could not believe the actual size. I envisioned it blowing the door off my oven. Super great bread. I also have perfected your rye bread using pickle juice, my go to loaf. One every 10 days I make. Just got your book as well and am throwing out my "Not JK" bread recipes.
