I love the idea of the Pink Panthers trying to organize a crime through Zoom. "Alright, now I'm going to try and share the blueprints. Borko, can you see the screen? Borko? Borko, you're muted."
Also the wig hides your true hair. What if the dude was bald or something. Instead of a witness saying “one of them was a bald guy” its “one of them was a guy in a weird wig”. It helps to hide your identity.
Okay but the fact the Pink Panthers are still around means that they could totally end up watching this video and cackling at the wild theories, idk I like to speculate
For the postmortem: I think the wigs were a good move. If you’re describing the bandits to a sketch artist, and all you can remember about them is the funky wig they were wearing, or the silly shirt they were wearing, they’re going to be a lot harder to identify
Shane makes a good point about the wig being a disctraction. My mom used to work at a bank and they warned against robbers wearing specific things to distract from their face. Like there was a case with a guy that wore a bandaid under his eye. Nobody could remember anything about his physical features, just that he was wearing a bandaid. :)
That's what I was thinking! Forever ago I read that those who want to disguise themselves should wear something ridiculously ostentatious because in the end unless you have something very noticeable about your body (missing limb, unique tattoo/scar, etc.) everyone you encounter will automatically focus on the most pronounced things about you, even if they're fake. And it definitely seems proven in this case. We didn't hear anything about what the people actually looked like in the episode, it was all about things like the wigs and when the duo dressed as women. It's very cool to hear that they actually train at risk employees about that!
there was a robber in my hometown nicknamed the bald/bad hair bandit because he was bald but would wear crazy wigs to commit his robberies. turned out he lived near my parents
The only reason they probably didn't steal from low-middle class people is because their goods were probably less valuable. Not cus they had some noble agenda. In my opinion stealing is nothing to respect regardless of who its from.

Considering over here in Germany a thief recently couldn't be identified because their outfit was so bizarre that no one was able to remember their face, the pompadour was perhaps simply not daring _enough_
Post Mortem: A big heist you forgot to mention is one in Greece, where 3 members (if I recall correctly) were captured and sentenced to prison. One of them was a former professional basketball player Olivera Cirkovic, who spent 7 years in a high security Greek prison before managing to escape. She wrote a book called "Ja, Pink Panter" (I, Pink Panther) and has done numerous interviewes - on both press and tv about her time spent in the group, the heists, her time in prison and so on. If you'd like more information on this, I highly recommend checking that out

My mom was robbed by a ring of thieves who stole only diamonds in Houston, TX. They hit about 60 women in the metro area. Very professional, if despicable since they were targeting women in grocery stores alone for their wedding rings.

@@letmecatchyouslippin2425 it's not really that it's gonna happen in the future that they can't figure it out, it's that with high scale heists and even small serial heists there's usually a pattern or specific piece cops can use to anticipate where the thieves will go next. the fact there's no pattern and no tangible goals is what makes their next hit a mystery

However it is not the same as a nation like the US where people are generally not dying from starvation daily. Regardless of your personal believes as to why the disparity occurred it morally does not give you the right to take from others. when various crimes happen that have a lot of similarities, detectives tend to always connect them to eachother as a serial crime spree. they do this so that it makes other crimes easier to identify, the perpetrators easier to identify and it often helps predict future crimes. there is definitely a chance that some of these crimes were stand alone groups but because of the similarities they will always naturally be lumped together by any good detective
it seems that at least some of them were involved in multiple ones, but yeah if there are copycats or just weird coincidences then they could be associated with the group incorrectly. but that's not necessarily a bad thing, if someone gets arrested and thought to be part of the group when they actually aren't, it might just become a false lead, which seems like a potentially useful thing

However it is not the same as a nation like the US where people are generally not dying from starvation daily. Postmortem: How do we know all of these heists were committed by the same group of people? What is the common thread?
Just wigs?
Yeah good point, maybe other heists got mixed up with this one.
when various crimes happen that have a lot of similarities, detectives tend to always connect them to eachother as a serial crime spree. they do this so that it makes other crimes easier to identify, the perpetrators easier to identify and it often helps predict future crimes. there is definitely a chance that some of these crimes were stand alone groups but because of the similarities they will always naturally be lumped together by any good detective
that said, some could’ve been committed by impersonator groups who mimicked the crimes of the pink panthers so they would be detected less easily
it seems that at least some of them were involved in multiple ones, but yeah if there are copycats or just weird coincidences then they could be associated with the group incorrectly. but that's not necessarily a bad thing, if someone gets arrested and thought to be part of the group when they actually aren't, it might just become a false lead, which seems like a potentially useful thing
Yeah. If I was a jewelry robber and aware of this panther group, I'd just wear wigs every time too.
