  • My choice of guitar picks has evolved over the years. I'm taking a look at where I started and the path that has led me to the picks I use now.

I'm all about 2.0 thickness. Used Andy James flo & gator grip Dunlop's for a while. But now Dunlop Ultex jazz 3 is life! The pointyness of the these picks just improved the consistency & accuracy of my picking attack! Highly recommend them! 🍻

Yes! That's really good advice. I've heard many people through the years say " I don't like change" but I learned in the real world many times a change of things can help us along this Rocky road of life. Lord knows I need all the help I can get when it comes to guitar tips. Thanks 👍 for another great video.

'Slightly Annoyed Mike Guitar' is a mouthful, it's good you got Grumpy. Good topic! When young I used to like flexible picks but with age related issues I am using stiffer picks, and I find they are better for shaping tone as I can vary the position I hold it more easily and quickly. My wallet still has an expendable Dunlop .60, but I prefer the Dava (nice grip) or even stiffer local store branded (no gauge) picks. Upvote for finger picking skills.

"If you haven't tried it, you just don't know" well said Grumpy Mike! Still a beginning guitar player but I have noticed that my perception of what I thought something would be and what it is can be very different. I will go through my variety pick box and try them all tonight. Thanks for posting!

Best pick video I’ve ever watched. I use a .060 Dunlop nylon pick for acoustic and a dava pick for electric but I’ll have to give some thick picks a chance. Thanks for the video.

    Mike,
I have two favourites but still not happy and after dropping one a few months ago I’ve started playing with my thumb and finger closed like I’m still holding a pick.
It’s a learning curve but enjoying it.
I started off as a drummer in the early 60s and had to pack it in in the early 90s .

My favorite is my Gravity 1.5mm pick. I bought it simply because the transparent florescent neon green looked cool. But now I can't play with thinner picks.
The other picks I use are the Dunlop ultex 1mm. They are like a natural yellow color with a rhino on them. They feel good and sound good.

Gottasay I'm picky, too. When I started last December, a friend who has played for about 50 years suggested a Fender Heavy, but I knew it wasn't thick enough to be comfortable. Then, I added the rubber texture covers and it makes the pick 3mm thick. Real happy with them, but I want to try the thicker Chicken Picks I've seen.

I like trying out different types of picks but I keep coming back to Tortex 1:14mm (purple ones)
But different picks can affect your playing-so it’s a great idea to experiment & see what picks work best for your playing style
But I will keep trying different ones
    I also love stone picks

I call those thin picks, "clackers". The sound they make when hitting the strings
Kind of like using baseball cards on the spokes of a bike.

Oh man the pick debacle… I’m always switching picks and trying this and that and even been playing with different pick grips too.. I’m currently using Dunlop Flows .73.. just enough flex and just enough stiffness and also has raised gripping surface. I can’t use anything thats 1 mm and over because it’s too stiff and anything under .60 is almost too bendy.. .73 is kinda my jam lately.. it’ll probably change in another month or two. I have over 100 of all sorts of different shapes, sizes & thickness.. lol

@@grumpymikeguitar for all playing? Really? You're an experienced player, do you think this may apply to beginners also? Usual recommendation is thinner pick, really thin for strumming chords.

    • @grumpymikeguitar
      @grumpymikeguitar  3 года назад

I never recommend things like lighter guage strings or in this case, a thinner pick for beginners. The process of learning is all about becoming familiar and comfortable with instrument. Why get used to something you will outgrow then have to spend time getting used to something else. It just takes a little patience and effort up front but pays off on the back end.
As for using different picks for strumming and picking, what are you gonna do when your playing a song the requires both? Knowing what I know now, I truly regret how long I clung to the thin pick. The process of getting used to thicker pick was well worth the effort.

Maybe not anymore. The last few times I went, they didn't have picks laying out which is fine with me. I always have a pick or 2 on me.
