We called the "rob the bank" it the "elbow cam" and Dave said Bobo Olsen and Archie Moore would refer to these types of maneuvers as cams, rather than blocks because the intention was to create an angle with your elbow, allowing your opponents glove to slide off your arm while protecting your face. It was common to return a straight punch or cross after elbow cam was used. I was happy to come across your video, as this style of boxing is almost extinct. Keep it alive and keep teaching.Thank you!
52 blocks a tried and true street fighting art under Lyte Burly. Great defense against wrestlers as taking their hands away through limb destructions (aka defanging the snake) using 52 block techniques would render them less harmful as street conditions are hazardous for ground fighting such as sharp objects, sharp scaffold edges, cement, etc...the footwork also quite rooted and mobile for any terrain with the use of kickstand balance (great to supplement this kind of footwork with linear low kicks such as in Savate which is a good way to stop someone from reaching you as opposed to Muay Thai round kicks to the legs which would easily get scooped up by a resilient wrestler as if it were a missed low sidekick) . Good level changes also permits rapid low blows or take downs to finish an opponent. This guy is a legend who deserves worldwide recognition and 52 blocks needs to be more known!
I began training with Dave several years ago after being introduced to him by James Williams, founder of Nami-Ryu Aiki Heiho, a classical Japanese jujutsu school. When dave first began teaching me, he would reference all of his old and teachers and mentors that taught him the true "classical" boxing. One teacher he referenced much was Archie Moore. He then instructed me in the "rob the bank" block after my first week learning.
I’m from Brazil, I practice Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and I’m very interested in that art 52 Blocks. It is very interesting and functional. I’m trying to adapt, and using, some of the movements in my trainings. Thank you for the videos.
52blocksinfo, Thank you for uploading this video. I want to first compliment on your historically accurate and efficient "rob the bank" block. I am a boxer living in Southern California. My teacher, Dave Slocumbe, retired professional undefeated heavyweight got into the boxing scene in the 1960's when the "old school" pugilist-based boxing started merging into the "new school" boxing. Yo thx. Seen it before but overlooked it, thanx for shedding a new light on it, I like the adaptability and freedom of the movement plus the elbow can be easily used as weapon as well, will add it to my repertoire. Salute
i have never seen a book on 52blocks,when 52blocks was at its peak it was about your hand skills, back then kicking was looked at as something girls would do an when you started wrestling they stood you back up,you could add kicks, but it is mainly striking
I myself in Kenpo JKD Taekwondo boxing and San Soo guy I love this style of fighting I love the way this guy is teaching this is not just something you could do in the ring but you can also incorporate in the street and you can use it in all other forms of martial arts and it's something you can slip under the radar and any type of style and they'll just think that it's an advanced form of what they're already teaching my goodness my goodness you guys have thumbs up all the way from me I'm adding it to everything else I'm training with at the gym and at home
While living in the bay area during this time, he had the privilege of being trained by the old school boxers Carl "bobo" Olsen, who learned, trained, and boxed "The Mongoose" Archie Moore and Jersey Joe Wilcott. Dave also learned from Frank Scalercio, American kickboxing champion, and Bruce Lee, who would frequent Scalercio's Bay Area boxing gym on the weekends. During the peak of his career, Dave, my teacher, also became George Foreman's main boxing partner here in San Diego. -Continue-
SIMPLY BRILLIANT! Burly excellent study material how the greats used it before, might I add that rob the bank is good defense for when you are tired yes this is must know defensive technique.
I don't mean to blow you up with how-to's, but what would be the best method to block overhands if you can't evade them? Technical boxing overhands as well as sloppy, powerful looping overhands (primarily thrown by wrestlers and overall MMA fighters). Would it be a 'closed door' technique or a lateral skull and bones?
what up brot i fund out tha this type of boxing is efectives iam learning same blocking moves i was wondering what kind of push ups and work out i shuold do please info
not at all...i like answering those type of questions...we have a block called the crown that is good for that.. and close door both sides depending of the angle you take
After having followed your videos for a while and having trained in Filipino Martial Arts (Doce Pares style), I see alot of similarities between some 52 blocks and empty handed FMA techniques (which also borrow from dirty boxing) and philosophies, particularly usage of the elbows to break or disrupt punches (skull and bones), getting in close to jam punches and the triangular footwork used to get your head offline and gain an angle on your opponent. I'm a little curious as to the whether the connections are just coincidence or if there's some other reason why the two arts have these similarities.
Coming from a Kali, Wing Chun, and Boxing background here. Really interested in the similarities between 52 and panantukan; especially the destructions. Also, Skull & crossbones is structurally similar to the bong sao/wu sao structure in Wing Chun, and similar in principle to kali empty hands. Destroy the limbs, defang the snake.
52blocksinfo Eric is right, I am a kali/silat man with with elbow shields.. I was inspired by Lytes skull and crossbones as a defense/ limb destructions. It works against boxers. just tested last week.
Ok i got a book it a jail house rock book and explains it's from jail. but i when do the search online it lead me to 52block which i don't understand. ok if you doing "Rob the bank" tech the timing for the attack could easily use to throw kicks or knee to ribs being the legs are stronger then the arms and hands if not condition. which if you try to grab a karate/kickboxing/MT kicks with your fingers. well you might break them.
I saw Wing Chun teacher Randy Williams use the elbow the same way. In fact. he'd tuck his face behind his elbow..Only his eye'd show. The punch would get killed on the elbow or the forehead!!!
I'm not too familiar with this system it definitely looks interesting. I think this technique basically gives the opponent your whole left side open for a cross or hook to the body.
na rob the bank is a move used by archie moore...52 blocks was created through boxing there are some moves that could be used to throw off kicks, but its mainly for the hands
there go showing how much you know about boxing the statement i made was it wasn't something george did..IN the beginning of his career this style was not used when he fought ali,and frazier..he was taught that cross arm defense by archie moore who came into the game with that style of defense besides that guess who was george foreman trainer(DRUMROLL)ARCHIE MOORE..so that is what i meant...of course george did it i got the video up that you watched that shows that...AND names are way people
I never knew Gerry Cooney fought George Foreman, but I see they were no longer young men when they finally met. But any way I might have to watch that whole fight.
So basically what you saying 52Block is mainly striking and elbows/close quarters fighting and no kicks? Cause i have books about jail house rock book and i see the knee and elbows. as far what i seen in your videos is not in the book. And another thing Why the name was changed?
the guy in the video is not retreating when you attack, thats what i mean by fighting is attacking and retreating you dont let a man attack you and you just sit there while hes attacking you and trust me ,i know enough to gaurantee that if a guy gets in the ring with me doing that jail house up rock mess i spank him
