As some who has done time in Rikers Island, I learned 52 Blocks, I stopped using 52 Block and used boxing because when I fought other inmates who using 52 Blocks,I would always drop them like a bad habit with liver punches because it’s always wide open, and also I would always punch them in the wrists taking out their ability to punch.
I was wondering about the liver as they do seem to keep higher guards. I'd heard 52 was meant to be used in tight spaces so protecting the head is important...but if you fought in jail & still got liver shots in it seems that protecting the liver may need to get addressed within the system. This is the first video in which I believe someone actually knows, and understands, 52 Blocks. And to get a tutorial on long gun retention at the end is icing on the cake/gravy on the steak.
Starting at 5:00 he exactly explained the essence of the fighting style.. it's a free flowing art from based on the fighters personal rythym..it more like a defensive offensive at the same time skill. It's very strategic as well which makes it very effective in intense situations like being out number or against a weapon. If done correctly it definitely decreases the damage taken from opponent!! Love this form.. basically all styles can be used under this overall technique
This is beautiful! I'm not only talking about 52 blocks as a style, but this video - two martial artists respecting each other's styles and learning from each other.
My friend has been practicing this for about a year now and I was the first one to think it was complete bullshido. BUT after some research I’ve come to respect it as a very practical fighting style. If you notice many of these block styles are used in modern mma. It makes a lot of sense. It’s derived from street fighting so account for most ways you can be attacked in mma which is combat in its purest form. I will definitely keep looking into this style.
Yeah, I was thinking that if it wasn't seen much in the various combat sports then its likely to be some kind of bullshido, but after observing it closely and testing it out with some peeps of mine, I think this might genuinely be a hidden goldmine. It just makes sense and I'm impressed with its versatility. Trying it out i felt like it fills some gaps that in my game that I didn't even realize I had.
I think where a lot of good martial arts end up falling short and getting overlooked is the practitioners aren't ready for combat, but I like how he showed with the windshield wiper if you do happen to hit them with it you'll be ready and he put a lot more force than he probably would in a real fight into the bag work so he would be perfectly fine if he connected in a real fight because he is use to hitting much harder. 52 has some real legit foundation, you guys gotta get some schools down here in Southern Cali
The concept of "attack the sword" sounds a lot like "defang the snake" in Filipino Martial Arts. You're attacking the limb that you're being attacked with in an effort to neutralize their offense.

Excellent info! I've always know about 52 blocks and have seen the style used a lot growing up but I always thought it was just that.... style.. I didn't know what the practical use for fighting that way was. Since watching your video the first time a few months back and practicing the technique, the opportunity just arose the other day to put it to use. Fight broke out at some local spot, I tried to stay out of it as usual but a drink spilled all over my wife and sure enough it popped off. A blade was pulled out and most people scattered which is what I would have done if I wasn't so unlucky to be kind of cornered. I started using the blocks and firing back in between a few slices to my forearms and I can tell I was hurting him. I finally landed a really solid punch that dropped him and I was able to get passed him. This is when I saw my friend on the ground getting kicked. I walked into the crowd knowing if I leaned over to get him I would certainly be taking a kick or two too and maybe getting KO'd as I was already super dizzy from losing so much blood with the cuts to my forearms. Anyways I walk over to the crowd and work my way in, I lean over and grab my buddy, no kicks yet which was a good thing. All of the sudden I felt like I got poked in the eye by a finger or something, it was hard and super painful. Finished getting my boy up and started walking when I was feeling REALLY DIZZY at this point and was getting ready to drop any second... I could just feel it... my field of vision was rapidly closing and I could see the absolute terror in the eyes of the people I was passing.... and then .... BLACKNESS..... I woke up in the hospital. When I came to I found out that "eye poke" was precisely that but it was an eye poke with the same item I was getting cut with from the same guy I had just dropped. He came up from behind me and caught me in the eye. The prognosis is "promising" supposedly and if I'm lucky I will be able to see again out of that eye. Wearing a patch for now while I heal but it could have been worse hat I not been practicing for just the occasion.
Damn this is good and makes sense! The usual guards show your openings while this style keep shifting the openings so the attacker can never figure out where to hit!
The Bird definitely foundational from Kemetic Hands. Style of chained hands fighting from one of the African Martial Arts systems I've learned from..Kupigana.
