What a knockout! This song is so deceptively simple and seeing how it's played here really makes you have appreciation for something Allan, the band and Ron Richards deemed a throwaway album cut!
Here are the lyrics: Saturday night I was downtown Working for the FBI Sittin' in a nest of bad men Whiskey bottles piling high Bootlegging boozer on the west side Full of people who are doing wrong Just about to call up the DA man When I heard this woman sing a song A pair of 45's made me open my eyes My temperature started to rise She was a long cool woman in a black dress Just-a 5'9, beautiful, tall With just one look I was a bad mess 'Cause that long cool woman had it I saw her heading to the table Like a tall walking big black cat When Charlie said I hope that you're able boy 'Cause I'm telling you she knows where it's at Then suddenly we heard the sirens And everybody started to run A-jumping out of doors and tables When I heard somebody shootin' a gun Well the DA was pumping my left hand And a-she was a-holding my right Well I told her don't get scared 'Cause you're gonna be spared I've gotta be forgivin' if I wanna spend my living With a long cool woman in a black dress Just a 5'9 beautiful tall Yeah, with just one look I was a bad mess 'Cause that long cool woman had it all Had it all Had it all
I think actually you’re pretty close on the tone here. I like it. But I have always thought that maybe he used flat wound strings on that song? Can anyone confirm? It just has that campy 1960’s sort of dirty tone that flat wound can give.
According to Allan he played heavy gauge strings on a Telecaster, the heavy gauge is probably what you’re hearing, I doubt he would have had flats on a Telecaster in 1971
I have a Fender Bass VI too. Sounds like Jazz Bass in some ocasions and Hofner In a other. That Guild guitar is very funny. Zal Ianovsky was a man behind that model.
I think they might be called little-buckers or something, I'm not sure. They're whatever comes standard in the Guild Thunderbird though. I always thought this was a pretty good video on the guitar: ruclips.net/video/OpLXCa9AOO0/видео.html I think he talks some about the pickups.
Yeah, Bernie is seen with both a P bass and a Rickenbacker around this time, so it was probably one of those, but I figured my Bass VI would sound closer than my Hofner on this one.

Tony's simple guitar parts are really the secret ingredient in this song, they add a nice texture over the rather basic rock and roll riff
Which part is Tony? the opening riff is Allan?
Is not simple
One of my fav guitar intros. YOU got it all !!
Thanks for the compliment, glad you liked it!
Here are the lyrics:
Saturday night I was downtown
Working for the FBI
Sittin' in a nest of bad men
Whiskey bottles piling high
Bootlegging boozer on the west side
Full of people who are doing wrong
Just about to call up the DA man
When I heard this woman sing a song
A pair of 45's made me open my eyes
My temperature started to rise
She was a long cool woman in a black dress
Just-a 5'9, beautiful, tall
With just one look I was a bad mess
'Cause that long cool woman had it
I saw her heading to the table
Like a tall walking big black cat
When Charlie said I hope that you're able boy
'Cause I'm telling you she knows where it's at
Then suddenly we heard the sirens
And everybody started to run
A-jumping out of doors and tables
When I heard somebody shootin' a gun
Well the DA was pumping my left hand
And a-she was a-holding my right
Well I told her don't get scared
'Cause you're gonna be spared
I've gotta be forgivin' if I wanna spend my living
With a long cool woman in a black dress
Just a 5'9 beautiful tall
Yeah, with just one look I was a bad mess
'Cause that long cool woman had it all
Had it all
Had it all
Perfect! You nailed it. Thanks for sharing :) I also like your guitar taste, very cool instruments.
Thanks, I appreciate the compliments!
Phenomenal. One of Hollies' favorite songs. Thank you
I played a Guild Thunderbird exactly like that one at a music shop in Beacon, NY, about eight years ago. Funky looking axe, but what a cool sound!
Everything is so spot on! One my favorite songs ever man, I remember my dad introducing this to me forever ago in the early days of RUclips lol
Possibly my favorite guitar intro of all time and you nailed it perfectly 🙌🙌
I’m just learning to play! Damn one day!! Just one day, this is the one song I want to master!! Wow!!

Sounds great!!
Thanks Kimba!
Great job!! 👌
Thanks David!
Why do I like this more than the original song
I think actually you’re pretty close on the tone here. I like it. But I have always thought that maybe he used flat wound strings on that song? Can anyone confirm? It just has that campy 1960’s sort of dirty tone that flat wound can give.

👍👍👍👍
Это слишком круто!
This is badass. Almost makes me want to become a fed lol. Almost
haha thanks, glad you liked it!
love the squire
Thanks, I'm definitely loving the new mint green pickguard
Can you please do Get Together by the Youngbloods
Well done! The original guitar part was recorded via D.I. though. No amp/cab/mic involved. But I prefer your version through an amp :)
Do you have tabs available for this?
Telecaster on original recording of Hollies? Maybe?
Yep, Allan said he played a Telecaster with heavy gauge strings.
I have a Fender Bass VI too. Sounds like Jazz Bass in some ocasions and Hofner In a other. That Guild guitar is very funny. Zal Ianovsky was a man behind that model.
Amp settings?
Not exactly sure, I think pretty low on bass, and treble was probably a little higher than halfway, volume low enough to keep it a clean tone
Just wondering what pickups are in the guild?
I think they might be called little-buckers or something, I'm not sure. They're whatever comes standard in the Guild Thunderbird though. I always thought this was a pretty good video on the guitar: ruclips.net/video/OpLXCa9AOO0/видео.html
I think he talks some about the pickups.
how come that guitar sounds like a bass? is it a 6 string bass?
Yeah it’s a Fender Bass VI, basically a guitar tuning tuned down an octave
Who played the intro riff was it Tony?
The intro riff and solo bit (me in the purple shirt) are Allan on a Telecaster, Tony does the overdubs
@@ManWithNoExpression where about are the overdubs in the video?
Which part does Tony play?
He does all the parts where I’m wearing the white shirt with blue spots
@@ManWithNoExpression Tony's guitar is the higher tone then. I have this vinyl sleeve of signed on my wall by Tony Hicks and Bobby Elliott!
@@ManWithNoExpression thank you.
Are you sure it wasn't a 4 string bass?
What difference does that make?
Yeah, Bernie is seen with both a P bass and a Rickenbacker around this time, so it was probably one of those, but I figured my Bass VI would sound closer than my Hofner on this one.
@@ManWithNoExpression you should buy a P Bass or a Rickenbacker 4001
That's fuckin Tiddys.
Lol, your shorts make you look like you're donald ducking it.
