  • On 3 September 1999, ITN joined Harrods owner Mohamed Al-Fayed as he made his way around the iconic luxury department store, greeting grieving customers visiting the shop's memorial to Diana, Princess of Wales and his son, Dodi Fayed. Al-Fayed posed beside the memorial to Diana and Dodi, both of whom were killed in a Paris car crash two years previously. The footage was recorded to coincide with the release of a long-awaited report into the crash. While much initial public reaction to the tragedy blamed the paparazzi for chasing Diana and Dodi’s car through Paris, the report cleared all the photographers and the press motorcyclist implicated in the accident. The judge, Herve Stephan, placed the blame for the crash mainly on the driver, Henri Paul, who was found to have been drunk and on anti-depressants when he got behind the wheel of the Mercedes.
For his part, Mohamed Al-Fayed never accepted that version of events. Two weeks after this footage was filmed, he repeated his claim first made in 1998 that Princess Diana and his son, Dodi, were murdered and that the car crash in Paris wasn't an accident. He claimed the driver Henri Paul was being paid by MI6, and that blood samples taken from his body after the crash had been tampered with. Later, to his claims of conspiracy he would add his belief that the murder was ordered by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Mohamed Al-Fayed’s claims were found by more than one investigation to be unfounded.
It was announced on 1 September 2023 that Mohamed Al-Fayed had past away on 30 August, aged 94. A statement released by his family said he “passed away peacefully of old age” and “enjoyed a long and fulfilled retirement surrounded by his loved ones."

How heart wrenching it was for dodi to see his son dead. He loved and fought right to the end for his son. But in vain. God watches everything 🙌 🙏

Tao gentil, sr. Mohamed. Mas seu olhar carrega a tristeza da perda de seu filho.
A dor mais insuportavel, de um pai e uma mae, eh de ter de sepultar seus filhos.

It was very difficult for him to accept the drunken driver not funktioning seatbelts and reconstructed Mercedes theory. Why they left the hotel that night switching cars remains a mystery. Too many unanswered questions and to painful. He was a good friend to Diana when she needed it very sad ending

@@nadiasawicki4108Sad to see that almost 27 years later people still repeat the drunken driver story! At first it was the paparazzi and then when witnesses said there were no one around when the car crashed they made up the drunken story giving a percentage of carbon monoxide that would have made him impossible for the driver to be able to stand.

The poor man was heartbroken when he lost his son. The memorial in Harrods would be like a lifeline. Regardless of his wealth he was a father first and foremost. I was sad to hear of his passing....he never found peace for the tragedy. RIP Mohammad 🙏🙏🙏

His words were vile and I don’t excuse them but he was just bitter that his son died many people say irrational things in their grief and bitterness. About the night in question hindsight is 20/20 and I love Diana but what she should’ve done was stay at the hotel she was at for the night and try to leave till the next day but I digress RIP Diana, Dodi, and now Mr Fayed
