  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Food sovereignty activist Daniel Anthony pounds poi, a staple of Native Hawaiian life, while he tells a story of reconnecting to our ancestral foods. Find out how an indigenous food was once considered illicit, and how it heals a community.
Food sovereignty leader, local farming advocate, driving force behind the movement to bring kalo back to our classrooms, kitchens and local economies.
Daniel Anthony is a keiki o ka ‘aina (child of the land), raised on O‘ahu’s Waianae Coast surrounded by the ‘aina (land), kai (sea) and kupuna (elders). As a father, it became his goal to raise his children the same way, so in 2009, he co-founded Mana Ai LLC, a company that produces, distributes and promotes fresh artisan poi and paʻiʻai made from the kalo (taro) plant.
Two years later, Daniel was one of the driving forces behind a statewide movement to successfully pass legislation legalizing the public sale of hand-pounded poi, which is produced in the traditional Hawaiian manner using a wooden board and stone. Driven by a vision of restoring ‘aina momona (abundant land) in Hawai‘i, he also established Hui Aloha ʻAina Momona, a nonprofit organization that engages the community in a range of cultural activities.
Daniel believes that many of the challenges facing Hawai‘i today can be addressed through fostering a relationship with Häloa-the first ancestor of the Hawaiian people and the Hawaiian name for the kalo plant. He will appearon the big screen in I am Häloa, a feature-length documentary film slated for release next year. I am Häloa chronicles the journey of three young Hawaiian women as they gain a better understanding of their culture by making kalo their starch staple for 90 days.

Wow! Indigenous culture entrepreneur! I'm inspired! What an AMAZING speech.
I am a Toastmaster and a lawyer, practiced years, but I don't think I can speak this WELL while pounding on yams so hard, both at the same time, while seamlessly interchanging from speaking to pounding. One of the best speeches I've heard in my life !

But they have so much talent! I mean, not "talent" in the sense of singing, dancing, acting, painting, playing an instrument, writing, playing a sport, but... I mean, they are pretty and people give them a lot of money. That is kind of like a talent, I guess 🤷

Loved it!!! I'm doing research and this is also considered part of the Hawaiian culture. I hate to admit that I have only tried POI in Japan and it was imported from Hawaii and frozen. The attempts to make it were failed cause I had no true Hawaiians near by on a military base, I understand the process better after watching you and others make it, but the sacred rites and special process is of great interest especially the fermentation which give sit the special flavor. I plan on visiting Hawaii one day soon. Since I am in San Diego, there doesn't seem to be many sources for POI. The water alone in Hawaii was a very special ingredient as it did NOT have the "chemicals put into city water.(I rarely drink that anyway) Bottled, filtered, or not at all....I'm also trying more coconut water, but hardly any comes from the Big Island. (Thailand, Philippines, Costa Rica, or even form Brazil, etc... I look forward to eating Real POI made by real Hawaiians and getting "Healthier" Aloha !
