- Fuse Exclusive: Interview conducted 11/23/11, one day after the band announced its plans to disband. Geoff discusses the band's foundation and early days, the bands who inspired them, the new crop of artists they've influenced, career highs and lows, the band's brotherhood, and what the band plans to do post-breakup.
On seeing them last year (at the age of 22), I managed to sneak backstage through a curtain to the side of the stage. Geoff was there, talking to a couple of girls. I shouted his name and he turned around and ran over to me. He gave me the most heartfelt hug and thanked me for coming to the show. I thought back to 15 year old me sitting in my room, listening to Thursday. It reminded me of what music is about and why it'll always be such a pillar in my life.
Geoff shouting out Lifetime, You and I, La Dispute, Touche Amore, and American Nightmare. Love to see it
God, I wanna hug this guy before I die. It's officially on my bucket list.
I could also really get used to geoff's smile
Gene Cole, yes he is.
I hugged him after a show in 2012 and I felt my body sink into him, it was crazy
I did! I was 17 haha- 27 now
Same
Ten years later and I'm still listening from time to time. So nostalgic. Deep down I'm still the same 15 year old rocking out to cross out the eyes.
Seems like a really kind down to earth guy, no wonder he wrote such good stuff
amelia marie you're a cutie!
Forever grateful for them. Truly saved my life.
I talked to this man before his acoustic set at Warped Tour.
Alot of musician's are like "Look at me I'm awesome."
But when he said "Thank you so much I appreciate hearing (what I told him) and hugged I could definitely tell how much he cares about the people he plays for, and shows it in his fan moments.
I hope things go better for him, cause he was like "I got invited to play at the same time I was getting kicked out of my apartment." I was recently in a flipped bus accident" " I was like aww
I missed my opportunity to hug and thank them from the bottom of my heart for their music and I'll always regret it! They have always been so freaking nice and I see he hasn't changed. I wish the best for all of them and for Geoff especially with this tough economy.
He is so cute. I always smile when I see his pics/videos 😌😍
You're on my arm dudes. You revived my urge to play music again after I had been away for too long. Then a friend of mine played the War All The Time album for me and I was hooked again. You will be missed.
yes it's been a decade since I first started listening to Thursday and I can say that full collapse and waiting saved my life also.
I did the same at the Seattle stop. Thursday inspired me so much I got a tattoo on my arm, which he took a picture of. I took some video from the set, I'll put it up in a moment.
I remember buying Full Collapse when I was 15 and being blown away by Geoff's integrity, sincerity and passion. I remember hearing stories about how he would break down the barriers between the band and the crowd by climbing down into the audience, finding those singing with the most passion, embracing them and singing the words that meant so much to them for them, with just as much vigor and heart as they were. I was determined that one day the same thing would happen to me.
Nothing to say that hasn't been said. Forever grateful for their music. Saved my life. -3
My inspiration for getting into music. I hope one day I can make someone else feel the same way Thursday made me feel.
25 years later still killing it with a new release.
that was like the worst day of my life.. hearing that Thursday had split.
Good news...
And now I'm seeing them in Nashville in a few days!
I didn't even wanna go that much or knew the line up but reading "Geoff Rickly" at the acoustic basment.....I was so there.
I feel the same way as you do also....i got into Thursday around the same age when Full Collapse had just come out. The scene was really awesome back then.
before I died I wanted to see Thursday and Paramore and MCR and alot of other bands play but i cant now.. and that upsets me that i cant ever see thursday nor paramore(with josh and zac farro) perform. i guess i better see MCR before they split up even thought they lost bobby.
i know he is. i saw him play with circa survive twice and I'm seeing him in December. but he has nice teeth
They should be more known
Bro got 10 minutes of national airtime and spent the whole thing shouting out other bands. Fkn class act.
You & I is soooo good
It wasn't Jeff screaming on Full Collapse?! What the hell? When did this become news? I really love the screams in 'Understanding'... weird that Geoff ended up sounding so similar on the next records
Yup it’s a weird rare thing but yeah, he isn’t the one credited with the screams
@RevolutionButton Same for me man. Tough year...with Thrice too. Tough times...fuck.
I see people talking about how they snuck backstage to talk to Geoff meanwhile I was over here too scared to follow Thursday to their tour bus haha.
Aaahh... someone else who did the same! Guess I'm not as crazy as I thought :-)
Touché Amoré and La Dispute sound nothing like Thursday?
what do you mean? they may be more hardcore oriented. more "screamo", but thursdays sound was clearly a branch of screamo. he wasn't even claiming they sounded like them, but that they had an association, and were fans of each other.
also, in my opinion, la dispute and touche might as well be the same band, from my ear.
the band that i most feel is goin to keep running with that thursday sound is brighter arrows from chicago, check um out.
Adam Schmidt
oh and yeah.....My Fictions (formerly a breath beyond broken) kill touche amore and defeater. their gettin slept on.
WHAT THE HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHY?! Thursday this is a sad day to here about Thursday on a Thursday... :( no joke very sad, just not about the day. :(
Thursday shouldve listened to the band Kolya they were better and narrative vocals than La Dispute and much more before la dispute was ever band and around the time thursday started since Kolya began in '98 with a 2 song 7" called Iditarod
Slint. End of discussion.
Tyler the Creator looks like black Geoff Rickly
This comment haunts me
Cause of the gap tooth? I don’t understand lmao
mmmm chad croger
i could never get into that spoken word shit. i just cant .
k k
Thursday is a pretty good band. Happened to have Waiting, Full collapse, five stories EP, War all the time on cd along with Full collapse on 12" vinyl. Cool band. But i wished they stayed diy and real. They played with some amazing bands during their summer ep, waiting and full collapse such as Staynless, Portrait, Reversal of man, Hot cross and Saetia. They ended up playing with shitty bands like mcr, paramore and all that other crap afterwards. Wished they didnt go big after full collapse.
nice teeth
