In theory you can update firmware through Displayport or HDMI. Another brand managed to do so, and I believe Msi aswell on one monitor. But it is Xiaomi so the chances of them actually letting users do it, most likely pretty slim.

After reviewing so many monitors I'd like to hear your opinion on the PG32UQX with its perfect brightness and pop and outstanding local dimming algorithm (due to G-Sync scaler) if you ever had one according to other people. Afaik it's as best as it gets for mini-LED although it's one of the first gen panels. Let's hope we'll get similiar monitors at an affordable price in the future with the same performance and size since the G-Sync module is effectively dead and will be integrated into the mediatek scalers going forward.

I have the AOC, the truth is both suffer from the same issues, flickering with freesync active (although oleds and VAs claim to suffer more from it than IPS) and possible red tint as I read in some reviews (I noticed it on my AOC).
The advantage is that the xiaomi is IPS, no black smearing and the viewing angles and color uniformity towards the edges is much better than the AOC. The AOC suffers from a horrendous viewing angles and a pinkish color shift towards edges, although you are dead center to the screen… for content creation is a big no, but I learned to live with it for now.
What I have read about the xiaomi is that it does not automatically switch to the last local dimming setting that the user set when activating HDR, which the AOC does. That saves time.
On QC issues both are on par: I was lucky that my AOC arrived in perfect condition.
      Both monitors cannot update
Still, if I were you, I'd go for the Xiaomi. If you can have some patience, maybe over time the units will improve in terms of QC and firmware.
In my case, I'll hold out as long as I can with my AOC and as soon as I get the chance, I'll trade it in for the Xiaomi. Cheers.

It doesn't make sense to use local dimming in SDR (mainly for work) no matter how good the monitor and its algorithm are.

So the black smearing, is it noticeable? Yes, but very little and only for office tasks. In games, it is not noticeable, and I am a casual, non-competitive gamer, the clarity of movement and input lag I feel right.
