FILM DESCRIPTION:
A surprise attack in outer space forces the Enterprise to crash-land on a mysterious world. The assault came from Krall (Idris Elba), a lizard-like dictator who derives his energy by sucking the life out of his victims. Krall needs an ancient and valuable artifact that's aboard the badly damaged starship. Left stranded in a rugged wilderness, Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto) and the rest of the crew must now battle a deadly alien race while trying to find a way off their hostile planet.

This has an excellent example of how tight the crew is at this point. After Spock warns Kirk about the difficulty of catching all three ships, Kirk comes up with an idea, and right after the schematic comes up, Sulu knows exactly what Kirk is thinking and asks Chekov to scan for life signs because he's about to do a very dangerous turn.

Giving his track record of destroying a enterprise every movie I'd say it was reasonable for them to expect something brash out of him.
@@dontcare7086 ... they do it literally once in this trilogy
@@senseweaver01 uhhh no.. he nearly destroyed the ship against the romulan bad guy which would require major repairs hence it was functionally useless until starfleet repaired it. He destroyed the second enterprise when the admiral blew the warp core and he chased khan. Then he destroyed the enterprise again in the third film. Think of the enterprise as a modern day naval ship. Sure it can still float and sail slowly after being hit by torpedoes but it is functionally listed as destroyed until it reaches a port for repairs.
@@dontcare7086 Okay, I see what's happened here. "Destroy" is when something is damaged beyond repair. Haha, beyond. The Enterprise was 'destroyed' in this movie because they couldn't salvage and had to build a new one to replace it. In the other movies it was badly damaged, devastated, bunked out the wazoo - but it wasn't destroyed.
I just hope they gave the _Franklin_ a nice, comfortable place in a Museum afterwards. The old girl deserved the rest after all of that.
Maybe like a Museumship we have nowadays!
Maybe refitted and sent on tours
Thing sure took a beating and it still kept on going
If I Remember It Was Said To Have Been Turned Into A Training Ship
A year late to this, but the Franklin wasn't given any rest unfortunately, It was Refit into the Franklin A and is a special forces ship specifically designed for taking on swarm ships now
Spock: "Captain, intercepting all the three ships is an impossibility"
Kirk: "Hold my beer"
Ah yes, my favourite ster terk character: spoke.
There is no such thing as the impossible, just the highly improbable
Cooper: “No, it’s necessary.”

@@noblevi3623 that is one very chatty vulcan
the franklin slamming those little ships down into the water has strong "get f*cked" energy
I mean not everyone can say they suplexed 3 starships. With another starship XD
I loved the visuals for this movie, it all felt so smooth, but I think the thing I enjoy the most out of movies like this, most sci-fi movies with large ships, is the sound effects. Hearing the Enterprise, the Franklin, just most of these ships, the whirring of their engines, it's so satisfying.
Hard agree. Regardless of the (somewhat justified) criticisms of this trilogy, the sound design has always stuck with me. My favourite example is Enterprise arriving above Vulcan in the first film, there's no music, just sound scape, and it's fantastic.
Agreed...especially in into darkness and the warp chase scene....the sound of admiral marcus' assault ship catching up is DOOOOPE.
The size is what i love the most about this trilogy, it shows that they aren't small and nimble, but built for long exploration missions
Glad to know police sirens never change for hundreds of years
And they're american too! Guess we know who controls the world in the future.
@@realmechanicalstorm suddenly Elon Musk is starting to look suspicious.
Well the first warp capable ships were not united earth ships but american ships
The first uss enterprise was an American ship

I will forever love the Franklin rising out of the water like a breaching whale 🐋
Say what you want about the reboot movies, but they had some GREAT cinematography
I see what you did there. Or a bird...🦅
The music in this chase scene is so underrated. Fantastic score
can you imagine the sheer scale demostrated here? Yorktown must be the size of a small world: perhaps about 1/20th the size of our moon.
Not really, i mean its not that much bigger than the skyscrappers in the back
That's no moon.
Its a Space Station

This is a fast and furious action scene, but with star trek starships. This is a compliment
And an admonishment
0:19 This is such a cool shot
Seeing the ship travelling underwater
Kyle Campbell , agreed. In fact, when I saw it under water in the movies, I got brainlocked on the scene, even mesmerized by it. I had to see it again.
It was under the water, but not underwater until they punched through. I got your reference, but it was an access tunnel
2:00 the time they turned a starship into a whale.
No. They turned it into the Flying Dutchman from Pirates of the Caribbean.
Huh, I wonder why they didn't just do this in Voyage Home...
I love these smaller starships that can be piloted with such dexterity with an actual stick.
Spock: It's an impossibility!
Kirk: Let's do the impossible
I mean kirk is the only person to have "beat" the Kobayashi Maru.
2:01 I find that theme only works well with the enterprise, much more glorious and it suits her
considering all the things that old girl (the Franklin) went through I think she earned it

Yorktown, Enterprise... The great ships of WWII
Robertson Thirdly Wasn’t Lexington among them or is she a different class?
@@Ranger215able Starfleet had USS Hornet, you can see her in computer map on one TNG episode, in the same fleet as USS Hood and USS Akagi.
@@Ranger215able Lexington and Saratoga were slated to be battlecruisers, but were redesigned to become carriers. Which is why they were the longest aircraft carriers in the arsenal for a while. Enterprise and Yorktown were part of the Yorktown class Carriers.
Also in the original series the USS Enterprise is a Constitution class along with the USS Yorktown and USS Lexington for that reason
Meanwhile the Hornet and the Saratoga is still twiddling their thumbs in rebirth
It is interesting how starfleet's ships are completely waterproof even if they are 'space' ships.
Ship was actually flying inside a stardock hangar deck. Water is contained in a containment field for people to view ships.
how is it interesting? If you cant keep water out you cant keep oxygen in.
Don't confuse today's spacecraft with craft of 300 years in the future. Present day craft are built on a budget, to be as light as possible so the least amount of fuel is required to get it into space. With impulse technology, that limitation is completely moot, so they can build for structural and crew safety, plus adding structural integrity fields and forcefields on top of it
Voyager already traversed Fluidic Space, so it's safe to say they're seaworthy
i mean, on the other hand, they are space "ships"
Seems like the theme song is most commonly used when the main ship rises out from anything that is able to be passed through. Ie clouds, water
Anyone notice how in every film/show when a ship crashes into a Star Fleet populated area everyone rushes to help
Everyone: Cool micro planet!
Me: The ship do a big *S l a p*

How convenient the Franklin, a ship that's crashed way before Yorktown was even built, was able to bring up the schematics so easily.
It ran a scan, I think.
That's what I was thinking too, the ship probably instantly scanned the whole area and laid out a map of it
You do know they travel through warp speed, right? How do you think they avoid colliding with objects at warp speed. They have that fast and high range scanners and radars.

Star Trek Beyond finally figured out what the tone of the Kelvin Timeline should be. It's too bad that time ran out for them. The first move was good enough. It wasn't inspired but it was nostalgic which carried it. Into Darkness was brooding, lacked charm, and made a joke of astronomical distances. Star Trek Beyond was just plain "fun". Despite steps taken for the sake of set pieces, it felt like a Star Trek episode. That's actually high praise.
Tell you what. For an old ship. Franklin was manoeuvrable as hell.
The NX class was little. It was designed to be crewed by 80 odd people. A Miranda class (Khannnnnnnnnn!!!!!) was bigger.
@@willdavis3802Bit of a necropost, but the was a -class ship. It predated the -class, and was invented for this film. From what I can tell, the could fit, bow to stern, across the saucer of an , and an could likewise fit across the saucer section of a .
The is tiny!
@irregularassassin6380 This ship was an NX class, from the Enterprise show. They reference it in one of Scott's lines. It wasn't made for this movie.
@@willdavis3802It is definitively _not_ an NX-class ship for a number of reasons. I believe the line you're referring to includes Scotty saying something like "Can you believe it, Sir? The USS Franklin, first ship to break the warp-four barrier." If the Franklin was an NX-class ship, this line would make zero sense. The Enterprise NX-01 was the first NX-class ship off the line, and it broke the warp-five barrier on-screen before its sister ship, the Columbia NX-02, the second of the line, was more than a metal skeleton in spacedock.
There are also numerous quotes from production sources, including an interview conducted with the designer of the Franklin, all stating that it is _not_ an NX-class.
The USS Franklin is a Freedom-class ship, it was built before the NX-class launched. They're different spaceframes.
I really love yorktowns design it’s such a beautiful city ship
This by far is the greatest Star Trek scene this far
Franklin: HEY THERE! DID YA MISS ME?
(Krall's ship hits Franklin)
Franklin: GUESS NOT!
At 1:57 I feel like they should have had an additional shot of the spacecraft heading towards the surface as when this happened I didn't have a clue what came out of the water. Am I the only one? I'm not a Star Trek fan but this film was fantastic
You have it in 0:17
@@HELLMUTIL yeah I meant if you had that little clip before they burst out the water so you knew it was the ship. It's difficult to explain.
You kind of do at 1:51, right before the shot changes you can see the franklin aiming up towards the water/forcefield on the top of the tunnel. would have spoiled an epic moment with the sudden soundtrack change otherwise
It was common sense. Everyone knew Kirk was trying to intercept the invaders. An extra shot would of just been a waste of time
>I'm not a star trek fan and i loved jar jar ahbrams trek

Franklin, with that Big Ship energy!🖖
A fun fact I noticed about this film is that the Yorktown and the Enterprise are the names of two sisters US carriers served during WW2. It seems as if they are fated to meet again to me.
The USS Franklin was also a WW2 aircraft carrier (although not the same class as Enterprise and Yorktown).
“She was badly damaged by a Japanese air attack in March 1945, with the loss of over 800 of her crew, becoming the most heavily damaged United States aircraft carrier to survive the war.”
Looks like surviving runs in the Franklin Lineage even in space.
@@jk844100 well the spaceship is also a product of earth not discovering shields when it was commisioned. you put everything into Hull Plating as that is your shields.

0:06 Seriously? An X-Wing in Star Trek???
They look more like Starfurys.
I wish.
Lol I was thinking the same thing
AND EMBIID WITH THE BLOCK AND ITS A POSTER!
“Not in my space station, no no no.”
One problem with this movie - the ending. Instead of a new *Constitution* class… they should have gotten a modified *Dreadnaught* class ship, basically the _Vengeance_ with a white paint job and the negative space in the Saucer filled in with science labs and other non combat stuff that wasn't part of the original design.
[imagine if you were originally assigned to get the ship being built at Yorktown - it's just like the Captain of the new Sovereign class that got bumped cause Riker got the Enterprise-D destroyed by a single Bird of Prey, but didn't have the decency to have the crew die as well].
tru.
i can imagine this scene without soundtrack
And hundreds of years in the future they still haven't worked out how to disable a running vehicle safely , like they still don't do now.
Heh Kirk hit him with his own ship lol
Who held on to something when they said to
It’s nice to see another NX saving the universe 😂
Why can the Franklin catch those bee-ships in the hull when the Enterprise was torn to shreds by them?
My guess is that Krall is travelling much slower here than his swarm ships were when they tore up the Enterprise, and when they smashed through the door into Yorktown starbase. We can see Bones is able to fly his damaged drone far faster than Krall is travelling. So Krall is clearly throttling back here, probably to plot his move and to protect his escort.
Hate me if you want but this is my favorite of the rebooted movies and in many ways it's as good as The Voyage Home
Why hate you for it? It's a great Trek movie, and I put it up there in my top three. It actually has a consistent theme and character arcs that build toward exploring that theme.
I was actually shocked by how much they made Leonard Nimoy's real world death a major plot point here, and how well it worked with Zach Quinto's Spock.
All this with a 120 year old ship. It's not just the ship, it's the captain.
I'm still trying to figure out how the Franklin flu from underneath the water reserve. What is holding the water in place? I'm sure it's vacuum underneath, but water has incredible Mass for a liquid the molecules in the water do bind together in space but the sheer mass of water doesn't hold together as one unit, it seems to me there would be water bubbles literally the size of houses at the slightest momentum or movement of the station.
The whole Star Trek univesre is full of magical force fields and seemingly unlimited power generation, holding a bit of water in place wouldn't be much of an effort for them.
Just a bit more power when they rammed so they land on the ground and not back in the pool, and Krall would have been squished.
I can see Burj Al Arab 7* hotel at 1:18 😂😂😂

man.... Yorktown is gonna have a nightmare filtering out all that rust and heavy metal from their water supply (this is a joke)
Honestly overall I'm not wild about the Kelvin movies, too many things in then that bug me, but each does have some little thing I find good, like Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan. In Beyond the design of this space city with its multidirectional gravity fields just blows me away, it's just about the most stunning base I've ever seen, it's just a shame they gave it a name that should be on a ship.

New Star Trek movies are incredible, sci fi masterpieces, and better than Star Wars movies
I love star wars
Why does yorktown look so wrong
Because it is wrong according to your view of how things are to be built on a 3d world like Earth... However to a designer who can build in a 4d environment where there is no up or down left or right. the possibilities becomes less limited and you can go nuts. To people living there for years its perfectly normal. If we created ark ships that had to transverse across the stars for decades or centuries they would likely be giant space going cylinders that would allow easier creation of gravity but you would see a small town or city above you 24/7. It would look absolutely alien to us but to people living there it would be perfectly normal. For those living on space ships it would be normal. for a engineer it would be normal. Normal is simply how you were raised to believe what was normal.
Or as Obi Wan says. From a Certain Point of View.
