Wow this was super helpful. I keep seeing Hungry Root and when I signed up for an account I felt like it wasn't transparent enough, like I had no idea what I was getting myself into and didn't trust that. So I wanted to see a review or two and this basically answered all my questions, thank you!

After a hungryroot box arrived 2 days late, i figured I should take the temperature of the foods that arrived, as their site says to toss any refrigerated items over 40°F. Most of the items were over, including a curry sauce that was 53° and tomato marinara that felt warm, so I didn't even bother to take the temp.
I've had other warm and not quite cold items in the past, and my most recent box had warm ravioli pasta for the 2nd time. I'm just starting to think that the boxes are not sufficiently cold with the single ice pack they use. I'm not looking to get food poisoning, and there have definitely been days I've felt really off after eating their items. Now that I realize 53° feels "cold" to me, I'll be taking the temp of any "keep refrigerated" items I receive through the mail. Probably just going to go back to Purple Carrot.

Holy smokes! What a wonderful HONEST review! So rare these days... my husband and i will now NOT even go down this road because this service would drive me crazy with the "credits." As a fellow "ancient old school customer service gal" i can't deal with ppl who don't take complaints seriously.
Thanks again! By the way... anyone ever told you that you favor Rumer Willis? 😊

I’m so glad you found my review helpful!! Since I posted this video, they have updated their credits system allowing for unused credits to roll over into the next order, which is great! But there is still the issue of the price transparency.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard Rumer Willis but I think I’ve gotten Demi Moore in the past so that tracks 😂

I was given a $300 subscription as a birthday gift. From day 1 there were problems. Customer service is only handled thru e-mail which is not very quick in responding. Website is difficult to decifer at first, everything is listed as credits instead of dollars, prices are expensive.I adjusted my orders to fall in line with my available credit since I was unsure if I would remain a customer. They left many items out of 2 of the 3 deliveries and adjusted my credit by $53 credit. I chose 2 add ons, one a sandwich which was $20(pricey) and another a steak and potato meal for $23.I DO NOT want to give them any credit card because I don't want to continue with this sketchy company any longer. Stay away, far far away from Hungryroot.

I was searching for an organic non gmo food service, and their site came up. But every unboxing vid I have seen, I took a snapshot so I could zoom in on the produce stickers, and not one has been organic. All conventional. I also find it very odd that they literally want you to pay before you get to see what they have chosen for you. I backed out when I realized that. Thank you for your review as well, sort of clenches it for me.

Thank you so much for this review. I've seen a few really good deals come through for them and I really couldn't decide if it was worth it. I went back and forth a few times but I finally decided to sign up. I've seen a lot of positive reviews floating around out there but nothing that addressed my particular concerns. I'm glad that you brought up literally everything I am worried about. The credit systems seems purposely shady. Why can't they list their products in money? While I like the idea that they send you full size items like a real grocery store. I feel like it would just lead to a lot of food waste in the long run. They don't allow you to edit the "recipes". If something comes with potatoes, but you have a giant sack at home already, you don't have the option to add all the other things and remove the potatoes. You can't even swap ingredients. Lets say you really like the sound of some recipe but it contains an ingredient that you can't eat or don't like. They don't offer the option to swap that ingredient or remove it from your shopping cart. You are just stuck with the dilemma of what to do with that extra ingredient or not ordering it entirely. I also find their recipes to be overly simplistic. What is the point of being a full grocery delivery service when the meals are basically things that I can come up with on my own. I also feel all the convenience foods leads to a lot of packaging waste. It's like the worst of both a meal kit delivery service and a grocery delivery service. The reason why a true meal kit delivery service is nice because they give you exactly what you need to make a meal and nothing more. There's not extra, minimal waste, and you don't have to worry about dealing with leftovers if you are busy or traveling and the reason why true grocery delivery is good is the pure customization of everything. You can order literally anything you want, make your own plan for how to address leftover ingredients. I am still willing to give it a try but honestly, I plan to cancel after the first delivery.
I also agree that their customer service is lacking but I think that's by design. There's no phone number or chat. You have to text or email and wait for a response. They don't want you to be able to easily address problems with your order because it would lead to them having to offer more corrections. A time sensitive service like this really should have a way to get a hold of them immediately.
Also, I agree with you that it's not a good idea for these services to send you things that aren't remotely similar to what you ordered when something is out. I know Misfits would send me freebies every once in awhile but sometimes it was things I would never eat and they sat in my freezer for years. These companies claim to care about food waste but sending food that you won't eat is not the way to address it.
For my regular grocery delivery, I prefer Imperfect/Misfit Foods. It's just groceries, there's no gimmicks, you can skip as much as you want, and order as little or as much as you want. You also have the option to select certain items as "never" so if you are vegan for example, you can go through and select all the meat products. They still sell plenty of convenience foods so you can put together simple meals on your own. They even sell that lentil pack that you mentioned.

    • @TotallyForkable

You made so many spot on points! I’m curious, did you end up ordering, and what did you think? I still use them but only when I have credits built up from people using my discount code, so I still enjoy the service but am not actually paying out of pocket for it. I find they have enough interesting products that I can’t find in my local stores, paired with my usual essentials, that it makes it “worth it” in a sense even though, like I said, I’m just using affiliate credits.
I hear what you’re saying re: the recipes and not being able to make substitutions. What I would do is browse the recipes to get inspiration, and then put together my own “recipes” from the “grocery” section. That way I could add exactly what I wanted. Otherwise, like you said, you end up with way too much of one thing that you’re never going to eat again, and it doesn’t feel good throwing it away.
I used Misfits years ago (I reviewed them in one of my first videos on my channel, back when they were pretty much produce only!) but I’ve been wanting to revisit them for quite some time now!

@@TotallyForkable I did end up trying it! That first deal was too good to refuse but I have not ordered since. I do appreciate how they specialize in high quality meal kits that are quick and easy to make. Personally it's not my style of meal kit, I much prefer meal kits that offer some kind of learning experience, either a new type of food or cooking technique that I've never done before. My husband on the other hand, really enjoyed Hungryroot. He's always pressed for time and it's nice that the recipes are so fast and simple that he can make us dinner when he is tired and just got home from work. He doesn't have to think about it, everything is there. One of the recipes, actually made so many leftovers that we were eating it all week so that is nice if you like to have leftovers. As far as will we order it again? I don't think it will be a regular thing for us. I think it will be nice if we have a particular busy week coming up and we need to be able to cook convenient things but still want to eat healthy. So, when we order, we'll have to keep an eye on that ordering window to make sure we cancel before they send out another box. That's something I also don't like, but all the subscription services do it, they will keep sending you stuff unless you make specific plans to cancel or skip. Personally, I leave mine in the "cancelled" mode until I plan specifically to order something and then after they ship it out, I log back in and set my account to "cancelled" again.

@@TotallyForkable I have been using them off and on now for the last 6 months. Recently I was using them a lot because they were sending discount code after discount code. They added a feature that lets you remove items from recipes so that's nice. But I just cannot get over how weird they are about the actual money that things cost. It seems purposely shady. Even if I try a new discount code, I can't see it applied to my order until after it gets charged to my account. That just seems like they're trying to "trick" you into buying things (again, not great for food waste). I am a frugal person, it's one of the main reasons why I cook at home so much, not showing me the real cost of the item is really weird. Nowhere in your account can you see what discounts were applied or what your current order costs in real money. You can only see the previous charges that were made to your card after an order was shipped out. In order to find out if a discount code actually got applied, I have to email or text them and wait for a customer service rep to respond after checking my account. It's just odd, I don't know why they don't change the website to make it easier to see these things. It can't be cheap to hire all these customer service reps to deal with each situation.
I also just find their service living in no-man's land. It's not quite meal kit, not quite grocery. All their grocery items are like the things you find from the convenience section in a grocery store. It all comes individually packaged in plastic, and then they go out of their way to provide biodegradable bags for the meat (which are also individually wrapped in plastic). It's just plain odd. I could see Kroger or Instacart integrating the "recipes" idea into their online shopping experiences but I just don't know if this service will be around long term doing only that. It's just odd.

My first experience was so very bad. The delivery was over 72h late (!!!) and the food was 50 degrees and up. Additionally, since they told me about substitutions ahead of time, I bought some things locally to replace them. Then the meats, etc were warm so the ingredients I'd bought separately were orphaned as well!! So frustrating. The only good part was they canceled and refunded my entire order with no hassles. These services are only as good as the delivery companies they partner with :c

All I hear is things you didn't do that caused problems not the company. You didn't pick because you forgot, you closed forgot and had credit. Meat on later probably again you probably forgot to redo on picking diet option when you redid. They give you week to change the order and seasons of food possibly for substitutes and out of stock from there stock . But again you can edit constantly. But you did have good points of substitution options. I disagree but I did like the review. But most of stuff was your fault by forgetting so makes me think you didn't update and you did something wrong and ripple effect.

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  Год назад +4

I never forgot to "re-do" the diet picking option. The meat was sent to me when I was on my first round of Hungryroot. When I re-started my account it still had all my info including my dietary preferences. I don't think it matters who's at "fault" for forgetting this or that, the point is it's frustrating when a company seemingly deliberately makes it difficult for you to remember (doesn't send designated reminder e-mails, etc). I've used other services that make it much easier so I'm just speaking from my experience. Many other people are frustrated with the same things as you can see from the comments, but to each their own!

Maybe the problem is with you, but I would not buy Hungryroot, cooking is not that hard, the store has frozen meals similar to this. The reason Co's like this exist is to take advantage of people too lazy to go to the store and too dumb to boil water.
