  • Yet another excellent chess set from the House of Staunton, this time the Cambridge Springs Series Chess Pieces, Camaratta Chess Collection, purchased together with a brown premium leather chess box. Chess pieces are natural boxwood and Indian rosewood. Inexpensive chess set with a great overall quality and attention to detail. As always, House of Staunton makes great chess sets and chess pieces that any chess enthusiast would be proud to own.

    The holes made on the Knights might be pilot holes made to secure callipers to hold the chess piece securely, while the shape of the knight is machined, perhaps the craftsmen have issues with shaky hands.

    • @AlSuChess
      @AlSuChess  2 года назад

      That's an interesting observation! I think the knights are still machine milled, at least partly, so the machine has to attach to the base of the knight! I was told that the machines that mill the knights are expensive and different from the machines that make all the other chess pieces!

    I think once you make public the idea to give the chess set to your friend, you kinda have to do it! It’s a win win! You feel good. Your friend gets an awesome gift!

      I agree! If it wasn't for the customs charging him a hefty tax on it, then it would have been a total win.

      I am able to get the chess sets as they become available, and at times I trade my old ones in, at the moment I have about 7 or so, but I buy new ones if the price is good.

      It’s easy to get hooked on Chess! In April this year I learned that a new Chess Club was forming just down the street from where I live. That inspired me to upgrade my gear to something nice. Less than 4 months later I’ve got a $1000 hole in my wallet and I don’t regret a penny of it! In more than 55 years I’ve had many chess sets and accessories but never spent more than 50 or 60 bucks on anything! It’s about time I had gear that reflects my own passion for the game! It’s not a waste of money if you use it and enjoy it! There’s nothing wrong with sharing your passion!

    I do have quite a few sets and I'm always looking for nice cases for them, but I can't afford anything as nice as the case you have. Still, if you keep your eyes open, it's surprising what you can find in flea markets and yard sales. I've found some really nice cases that way, even if that's not what they were made for.

    • @AlSuChess
      @AlSuChess  3 года назад +2

      That's a good approach, in doing that you are always keeping your eyes open about how to improvise things you see to take on other uses, really interesting! Thanks for watching!

    The head of the king is big and roundish and is different from the normal staunton. It might be a French set.

    • @AlSuChess
      @AlSuChess  3 года назад +1

      You are right, you'll notice the head looks more round, the bishop is looks slightly more rounded too. It's different, but still aesthetic.

      @Al Su Chess yes, I think they wanted to make a staunton chess set but the measurement went slightly wrong but still it is OK for playing chess with it.

    Why are the base pads for the kings unglued?

  • @ragnorak56
    @ragnorak56 3 года назад +2

    Very nice review, thank you. My HoS Zagreb set has interchangeable King finials and 1 of them had that slight slight gap that yours has. I just sanded down the stem which was fractions of a mm too long. After that the base of the cross actually touched the top of the King piece. I also have a HoS coffer for my 4.4" Official Staunton 1849 set and it is huge. Much bigger than I expected and I don't think you would want to use it for that set. Lastly I have only experienced that large pours thing with my Blood Rosewood sets from CB and RoyalChessMall. I might be mistaken but did you say you can buff that put?

    • @AlSuChess
      @AlSuChess  3 года назад +2

      Thank you so much for that information! I wasn't entirely sure that the finial can be removed and figured I'd leave it as is, I have seen where you can change the finials on the Zagreb set, just not sure I can do the same here, but I'll have to take a look. I was looking to see how a coffer would compare to, say a full briefcase, I am thinking about getting a coffer with my next set if it happens to be a large enough set, but we'll see. I would assume you could theoretically buff the pieces to reduce the visibility of the pores within the wood, but if the pores extend through the entirety of the wood, then I'd think buffing it would have limited success, maybe using some sort of coat would provide better shine, but I like the set the way it is and wouldn't really need it to be different. It's interesting you mention Blood Rosewood having pores like that, because for a while now I have been eyeing a particular chess set on the house of staunton clearance section - the 4.4 murphy series luxury pieces in boxwood/ blood rosewood and on the picture that blood rosewood is super shiny, it looks as shiny as genuine ebony. Maybe they lacquer the blood rosewood pieces to give them that luster.

    • @ragnorak56
      @ragnorak56 3 года назад +2

      @@AlSuChess @Al Su I know the Zagreb finials were mechanically/wedged in and meant to be changeable. I'm not sure if they added some kind of glue to yours and I personally wouldn't risk more than a a few light tugs. I don't own any HoS Blood Rosewood but the ones I do own have a a high gloss look to them. It is also an interesting wood in that out of the types of wood sets I own I think its color changes the most depending on light source. I'm also thinking of purchasing a HoS Cooke set but I'm eyeing the 3.625 set.

    • @AlSuChess
      @AlSuChess  3 года назад +1

      @@ragnorak56 I think the Cooke set look very attractive, the sharp lines on the king and I also like the modest blunt look of the knight. Reminds me of the HOS Golden Collector Series that sells for $2k. Good eye!

      Could it be because the original Cambridge Springs sets had a unique finial design so they provided an extra set of finials to have an authentic looking replica or the traditional ones that your has on the video?

    Can the box fit all the pieces standing upright, or do some *have* to be lying down as you showed? EDIT: never mind: I see you addressed this!

    • @AlSuChess
      @AlSuChess  3 года назад

      They almost fit! I would probably recommend a slightly more spacious box for this set. It's tricky to know ahead of time when buying though.

    • @-johnny-deep-
      @-johnny-deep- 3 года назад +1

      @@AlSuChess Thanks. The "box situation" always seems to be a problem. HOS needs to start selling boxes appropriate for the chess sets they sell. Boxes that don't require you to risk damaging the pieces. And I never understood what "too small for a coffer" means. If each piece fits in its own padded slot, then it doesn't really matter how much extra space there is. I also think it's nuts to have to pay almost as much for a box as for the set itself, at least for the sub-$200 sets.

    • @AlSuChess
      @AlSuChess  3 года назад

      @@-johnny-deep- Yeah I totally agree with you on that. I think if the set is too small for a coffer then maybe your pieces would be rolling around in their spaces and possibly getting damaged, although that would probably be more of a problem if you were carrying the coffer around all the time, I could see that being an issue in a fitted briefcase, because those are held sideways in a way that I could see pieces would roll around if they are smaller than intended for the case. I definitely agree with you on the price issue too, I would only consider getting a box when I am buying the pieces, as they tend to give you some kind of discount at that time. Sometimes, looking around for a decent chess "set" may mean that you'll get a box with a board and the whole deal, sometimes that way you get a decent box as part of a set. I am looking at those board boxes, where you have drawers on each side for the pieces, but they are sold out of those.

      @@AlSuChess I kinda like this style box with padded slots from Chess Bazaar - www.chessbazaar.com/chess-set-accessories/storage-chess-box/chess-set-storage-box-coffer-with-double-tray-fixed-slots-for-3-75-4-0-pieces.html.
