- Chess set review of the Turin Series Artisan Chess Pieces from the House of Staunton, another excellent addition to the chess collection. Elegant wood chess pieces are among some of the best chess sets I've had the opportunity to own. Initially I wanted to include within this chess video some of more in-depth size and dimension comparisons between the Turin Chess Set and the Modena Chess Pieces, but I ended up digressing far too much as usual, so I will make another video next week where I can sit down in the comfort of my home and give you guys a closer look at how these pieces compare to some of the other chess sets I have in my collection. Until then, be sure to watch and comment, I try to read everyone's comments when I have the time, a lot of people have wonderful and helpful ideas, a true chess community. Thanks for the informative show and tell. The knights are very detailed. As they say, the knight probably represents half of the cost of a chess pieces due to the details involved. As usual, you did a good job telling us the features and benefits of the Turin.

Thanks a lot, I was intending to do a more elaborative comparison video of this set to the Modena just to show the similarities and differences, but with family and kids, didn't really get around to getting everything done that I was setting out to do. If people are interested I might do a comparison video next time.
I really like the color of those blood rosewood pieces, they are really pretty!
Yeah me too, I don't know if I was able to really show how the blood rosewood reflects in the light, but it reflects in ways that you usually don't notice wood reflect.

Pretty nice set. Of course, it's still out of stock. Do you just check every so often as you hinted, or is there a way to be put on an email alert to be notified when it's available? I know you're a member of the "free shipping club and 10% discount" club (can't remember the name)... As for the pieces, they're too elaborate for my tastes, but they do look flawless, except for the knights as you indicated. But that could be rationalized by realizing that they're natural animals and so don't always look perfect :-) I also don't like that the bishop miter slot cuts into the top knob. I know many other set designs do that too, but it just looks careless to me.
EDIT: HOS has a screamin' sale on their high end glass-topped chess boxes. Was $169, now $59 until 6/6. Fits kings up to 4.4" tall, and might fit this Turin set with all the pieces standing up. I have the same box and my tournament 3.9" set with 1.9" base king fits in with all the pieces standing! (Though you might have trouble with those knights - I'd probably wrap them in felt or something and lay them in sideways.) Hey that's great information about the boxes! I am going to look into those options, because I am definitely in need of some decent storage boxes at this point. In regards to the availability, it's tricky because as I might have mentioned in the video, it seems like once they sell out of a particular set, you can only hope that they will get it back in stock, especially the more expensive sets. For example, there is a set on house of staunton, the genuine staunton vintage set, sells for like $1500, it's been sold out for a long while now, I called about it at some point, they weren't even sure when they will get it back in stock, but I remember checking back in 2019 and it is still out of stock. Less expensive sets will probably be available more often due to higher demand and lower cost of manufacture.
Wow beautiful! Been busy and catching up on videos when I saw this. Other than the knight I gotta say I love those pawns. What board are you considering pairing with it? I have a new set in that wood and I'm wondering what type of board to pair off with it.
Hard to say! Possibly a walnut maybe, its always tricky to determine a good board without having to physically see pieces paired with it beforehand.
Just bought my first chess set from India (StauntonCastle), just want to ask are they already coated with sealant coming from the factory? thinking about applying a varnish to protect it.
I bought a set directly from india at one point, my set came coated but I think on some websites they allow you to request if you want it coated or not!
It looks beautiful but I would be afraid to play with something that delicate and expensive. It would look nice as a display piece though.

Are DGT Chess pieces great quality. Would like to have a nice collection of chess pieces from DGT. Have the DGT Official FIDE e-Pieces Weighted. Which i like the best maybe the Timeless also. The Ebony and Classic chess pieces is to beautiful to play.
At this point I don't really have much to say about the quality of dgt chess piec s or boards, I have been wishing to buy a dgt eBoard at some point but they are a bit expensive.
I want to buy a good and wooden chess board of size about 17 inches.
Any idea about price of this size board.

Hard to say, chess bazaar has some decent boards from time to time, I would look there. House of staunton has a lot of their boards out of stock, I don't look for boards too often.
Idol, i have a question for you. Besides feom collecting chess pieces do you still have another hobby or can you tell us about your skill on chess. are you a rated player and tell us about it. what is your rating online or otb
I haven't played chess much recently, I really do miss playing chess and getting better daily, it's just playing and studying chess takes a whole lot more time than doing these videos. It always seems to me that I have no free time. With a full time job, two small kids, life is busy busy, and although I have other interests like any other person, I must pick and choose what to do with the little free time I have. I always enjoyed going to the gym, also running. I enjoy art, photography and videography, pretty much anything that allows for creative expression. I wish I could fit it all into my days but I can't, maybe one days I'll start playing more competitively at chess again, but until then I just have to be happy with the balance I try to create.
