I did a similar thing in 2015 in China, but went out to a remote village on the border of mongolia with no hotels or anything, and the taxi was so confused why he was dropping us in this super remote village. We knocked on doors to find a place to stay. We had one of the best nights of our lives hanging out with the locals and sleeping on their floor. I love China so much and feel it's misrepresented in so many ways.

I lived in Shanghai near Jing'an temple in 2010-2011 and it was one of the best years of my life… the food, culture, nightlife, and people were incredible. Such a shame that there are many, especially in certain subsections the US, that think negatively of China… but I think that’s slowly starting to turn around.

Great video. But I have to point out:
1. The men in navy blue uniforms with whom you took selfie are actully security guards hired by property management companies. There are not many policemen patrolling the streets as foreigners might think.
2. The tiny car you were given a ride in is designed for grandpas' or grandmas' trip to grocery stores or for them to pick up their grandchildren from kindergartens. That's why there's not much room for adults.
3. People with whom you danced together were wearing traditional clothing of the Uygurs.
I lived in China for almost 3 years and 95% of what I found online about it beforehand was a lie. I LOVED living there due to the people, the amazing food, the adventure of a new place and the beauty of where I lived. It’s such a huge beautiful country that if you traveled non-stop for a year in it, you’d never see it all.
So real. I wouldn’t say everything is a lie, they are indeed strict, but people have so much more freedom compared to what media portrays

Dancing in the streets is generally not allowed. Chinese people should go to parks or squares to dance. You can dance to your heart's content as long as it doesn't disturb traffic or other people, and there are usually no police there.
As a Chinese, I fully heartily thank you guys for showing the real China to the world. Great job!

This channel has helped me in so many ways the past few years. From starting to learn how to snowboard all the way through my next adventure of climbing mountains in europa and South America..Covid brought me down in a deep dark depression that I only shared with myself and I was just starting to follow and watch this channel right before hand 2018. I still struggle with depression and such, but with the tools that I've been shown and how to use them, I've managed to want to continue on living and move outward in life with exploration of different countries on a budget, meet new people. I love what this group of people!

The people are some of the friendliest I’ve ever met and I wish more people would understand that they’re more than just what you hear on the news. As an American living in China for the past 5 years… the majority of the people here are so incredibly warm-hearted and welcoming. There’s so much that people outside of China would never or could never understand or see about life here. I’m so happy that this series is bringing new light into y’all’s eyes, but also the people that watch this video. The minds and souls of the regular Chinese people aren’t broadcasted through news and other propaganda we’re subject to. I hope you’re entire trip is incredible and something to remember! I'm an American who has lived in China for 11 years, and I want to thank you guys for coming to China with an open mind. So many people who talk about China online and in the media do so with an agenda, and most don't understand the country at all. The reality is that China is not a perfect country (no country is), but it is incredible in many ways.
People in the US are constantly bombarded with negative information about China to the point that they imagine it as a scary, dystopian nightmare. I highly recommend that more Americans and Europeans visit China to see it for themselves. People-to-people exchanges are vital, and if more people understand China better, it will help ease the insane geopolitical tensions.

When living in China, I found that people were always so willing to make exceptions for you. There is a lot of 人情…. I’m not sure how that translates in English, human kinship? 😅
That's not even a car, it's actually a modified moto tricycle 🤭. In Chengdu those elderlies drive them and pixxing off so many other cars because they get in your way out of nowhere when you are in a hurry...and you can't do nothing bc they are ELDERs.

Everybody let’s go to your nearby Chinese restaurant to order a plate of egg fired rice or cook it by yourself to celebrate the special day and support Chef Wang Gang because Chef Wang is about getting cancelled just for uploading a video about how to make egg fried rice on Weibo yesterday because Mao Zedong’s son, Mao AnYing, “was killed in action by an air strike during the Korean War.” (according to wiki) Little Pink think egg fired rice is an insult to Mao AnYing and saw egg fried rice as a taboo. Ridiculous and insane😂

As a British person who has lived in China for the past ten years I was confident that their experience would be great and their preconceptions would be quickly dissipated, their eyes have been slightly opened but to really realise how propagandised you are in the west it takes a long time living outside. The irony is that the US advises against travel to China when in reality you are at far more danger travelling to the US. I hope more people visit China and open their eyes, its really one of the best countries in the world to travel, its cheap (or at least it can be), transportation is cheap and convenient, it has unrivalled history and culture and its probably one of the safest countries in the world.

I have lived in China for two years now, and I have got to say: unless you have been here, you really don't know anything about the country.
The police in China are super friendly. Their jobs are to make problems go away (and not necessarily solve them) - it's not perfect, but you never have to be afraid of police causing problems.
Also, being such a big country, nobody cares what you do on the street. It's the opposite of Japan, really. I was a socially anxious person in my small town in Canada, but not at all in China. Just don't hurt anyone or break anything, and you can really do whatever you want (the amount of crazy stuff people do in China is wild)!

Well, it's "Crazy" in the real world sense, rather than something you 'crazy' you might see on the internet.
One time I was in a Chinese park, and an older man took a golf club and was just whacking anything and everything on the park's path, as far as he could send it.
Any grocery store (In some cities, not everywhere) has aquariums, where if you buy a live fish, the put it in a plastic bag, SLAM the bag on the counter to kill it, and hand it to you for purchase.
One time in a mall, I kept hearing chick noises coming from every direction - turns out that children had been buying baby chicks and putting them in white plastic bags to carry around with them.
On the less quirky side, on busy shopping streets you can often find impromptu edm concerts, rap battles, hip-hop dancing, skaters doing flips off of anything. Honestly its difficult to remember everything, but if you go out often around town in the busy spots, you will find some strange things.
Point being: with all of this going on daily, you don't need to worry about being socially anxious.@@StefanCreates
You can be free in public places under government management. For example, parks and some sidewalks or commercial pedestrian streets. But in some commercial squares, it may not be possible. Because although it is a commercial square, the square belongs to a private company. There may be security guards there to prevent you from affecting pedestrians.@@komodood

As someone who currently lives in China and has done for 6 years, this makes me so happy. I love my life here, the people are so friendly and life is so comfortable. Of course, when it comes to visas and permits it can get a little stressful, but that's nothing new. I had just as much trouble visiting the US from the UK as I did when I first travelled to China from the UK. Glad you guys finally made it out and are able to educate more people about what life is really like here!
I agree, I also moved from the UK to China around 10 years ago. It shouldn't be easy to obtain the right to live in someone else's country. The UK gives out passports like candy at a sweetshop and this means a lot people moving to the UK are less than desirable. In China, sure you can come study for a short time but if you want to live here long term , you aren't going to get a free ride. That's how it should be.

I'm an American who has been living in China for over 15 years. Post covid it seems like there is a lot more youtubers coming to china and challenging the narrative they see on the media, and discovering this unique and interesting country for themselves! And as you experienced, China isn't nearly or scary or depraved as many westerners worry about (I mean, you got free starbucks! lol) I moved here in my 30's originally for 6 months and I haven't left since because of how much I like it here (especially in comparison to living in the US.) looking forward to your next videos!

Even with a huge language barrier, body language, a smile and a bit empathy and compasion will be the only communication you need to connect with this beautiful people. I’ve been living in China for 5 years already.People are so friendly and helpful,the only challenge is language and they might get shy seeing a foreigner. It’s absolutely normal here to dance at the square or on the street and the guys with a uniform are just guards,not the police 😊

Their daily tasks are just to guard the door, prevent people from accidentally entering private spaces, open the door for vehicles, or maintain the order of the street outside the company, nothing more. Most of these people are just ordinary support staff.
I think that place belongs to a private company. So the security of the company does not allow pedestrians to dance. May be concerned about affecting business and pedestrian walking.

Obviously, they have jurisdiction over the area. If the area is a public area, people can dance freely (but it cannot affect pedestrian walking). In general, parks can be very free. There are also some street parks available.

As an expat living in Shanghai, you are way too worried about the police. They are really not that bad 😂 it’s not a scary place to go and people are generally very friendly and generous
But most of the cops in this video r actually security guards, I didn’t see that many real cops on the street. Maybe people from the west r too sensitive and watched too much anti China propaganda
The air polllution is really bad though, right? I would love to visit China someday but I have yet to find a city that is both easy to get around but still has an okay air at least because my asthma would otherwise just destroy me. Hope you have some recommendations.
@@Shirumoon the air pollution is actually not too bad. It is currently a good AQI rating. We have a few days where it is bad but not very often. It’s definitely not as bad as places like India. China moved a lot of the industrial factories away from the city’s to reduce the pollution. My wife has asthma as has very rarely been effected by the air quality. It definitely recommended Shanghai. It’s very foreigner friendly. Metro systems and taxis are very cheap and most signs are in English which helps. I don’t speak a word of Chinese and I’ve managed here easily for 3 1/2 years

@@Shirumoon I mean that may have been the case in the past. But I have not known anybody to do that at all since I’ve been here. And there are definitely people with asthma living here and are fine. Just the odd day where they might have to wear a mask to protect themselves. But I’d say that has happened maybe 2-3 times in the years I’ve lived here. I think even cities like Bangkok generally get worse air quality than the big cities in China now. I would say not to worry about the air quality if you was to visit here.

It's a wonderful culture, and I'm curious why are the police so strict? I was confused why they were waved out of the park, no filming and chatting?
I'm sure ppl are great but the fact that all people are constantly monitored made me decide never to visit even I have always wanted to since I was a kid, but I don't like feeling like I'm on a leash.
Mainland Chinese culture is a lot more privatized in the sense that while there is public surveillance for safety purposes, civilians filming in public is a lot less of a common thing, especially if it's foreigners. Definitely a cultural thing since people are a lot more reserved in general in public. Despite this, there are many mainland Chinese and foreign RUclips channels that do actively film in many Chinese cities, so I wouldn't say this is a widespread thing. Could just be a cop seeing a foreigner group filming with professional cameras and asking them to take it somewhere else. This cop could be an isolated incident too because I don't think this happens too often given the number of videos you can find online of people filming their experience in China. Also had a friend travel to Henan Province back in March who took a lot of videos and pictures for me and received no trouble from the police.
they dont actually track what u do all the time. i would say its similar to the surveillance system in the US, where by suspicious activity online would be raised to the system, and actually many countries do so to counter terrorism. so as long as u dont break any serious laws is fine. using vpn for personal use to surf youtube etc is fine as well

I really adore this video because I'm currently on exchange in China and I am overwhelmed by the kindness of strangers here and how easy it is to become instant friends with anyone. I have had so many fascinating conversations with strangers on the train, with taxi drivers and even people on the elevator. I wanted to add though that the people Matt took photos with were not police - it's funny here but security officers wear practically the same uniforms as police officers so it is very hard to tell them apart even for locals, but there are hardly any actual police on the street so don't worry!
Just don't get hurt they won't help you.

As someone who lives in China, I found it funny how you guys thought it would one of the hardest places to go 24 hours with needing help from strangers. Say what you will about the Chinese government, Chinese people are some of the friendliest and most helpful people on the planet. I'm glad you got to experience that, and that people got to see it. As Chinese I assure you we’re mostly nice and easy going😊 no need to worry about cops they’re most likely not there for spying on tourists and take as many pic you want 😂
China has many cultural differences, but for the most part, they are generous, the food is amazing and you're treating as a laowai mostly with curiosity and respect.
The pollution up North isn't great though.

I agree with you. I visited Shanghai prior to COVID with my family and two kids. The people are so friendly and willing to help. I have been to over 35 countries and I would say this is my favorite by far. Selfie s with everyone. Specially our kids everyone wanted one with the little ones. Love what you all do.
I love that your time in China went so great! I visited this beautiful country a few years ago and was amazed by absolutely everything! Most people are quite sceptical when I tell them, but I had the most wonderful time there as well and would love to go back some day!

I absolutely wish that I could have hosted Matt and Stefan while in Shanghai. I feel like there was a whole other world that they didn't get to see. Shanghai is such a beautiful and vibrant city with so much nuance. But I am so glad that they got to experience it the way they did!!!! We definitely need a Yes Fam Shanghai meet up. This is exactly what people need to see. There’s a MASSIVE difference between the the governments of each country and the people of each country. Some governments are better than others but all people are equally as amazing.
The government isn't even bad. If you compare what the Chinese government has done for its people compared to most western countries its not even comparable. If you watch footage of Xi Jin Ping interacting with ordinary Chinese people you can clearly see what a caring an empathetic man he is and how he genuinely cares about the lives of Chinese people. That is why the government enjoys such high support from its people and its leader is loved so much. You are not shown this in the west and it requires actually living in the country to really wake you up.
It's literally the government laying down the base making possible for a harmonious society.
The safety, the education, the wealth. You would find beggars on the street; less smiles while walking; people feeling uncomfortable greeting strangers; kids being warned agaisnt foreigners. But It's literally the opposite; the western media is just trying to blind people from their own governments shortcomings.
You just can't deny that their government did a good service for their citizens.

I can attest that China is one of the most Welcoming places I have ever visited as a foreigner/tourist. I spent 11 days between Beijing and Hunan Province, and every day was a new adventure full of smiles and conversations with locals. Granted the sheer amount of photos I was asked to be in was surprising, but I was more than happy to make another person’s day if it put a smile on their face

I'm from china and i stated watching yes theory since 2019 when i was in china when covid started in china. You guy's video have given me so much energy during the dark times during lock downs. I was quire suprised that yest theory haven't traveled to china over the years yall've been traveling the world and seeking discomfort and i've bee wating for yall to show this beautiful country to the world. The media doesn't even have to tell peope what to think for people to think a certain way. what i mean by that is if u keep on showing only one side of the story to someone, it wouldn't take long for people to form a styriotipical view of a counry (and this is tru for china and the US). I'm so greatful for what you guys are doing for this world, to show the truth, to set aside our differences as individuals and to connect with strangers and learn about eachother. I was actually in shanghai during the time you guys were there and when to the same places, i really hoped i could have met yall in person in my own country. I'm from China and the video is so nice. Most of the cops that you've encountered are security from either the mall, or so called "traffic police" who only deals with traffic problems, including controlling crowd flow. There are just so many people from China that every crowd gathering means a potential stampede or other security risks, plus we really do like gather around and look at stuff lol. In those cases just follow their orders and walk away and you are all good. I think the only real cop that you have encountered in this video is at 8:45.
Love all of the work you guys do. I'm a Chinese-American and it's been painful to see the way my ancestral home country has been portrayed in the media and the rising tensions between there and the country I was born and raised in. I have attachments to both and just wish for peace wherever we can achieve it. Thank you guys for portraying a hidden side of China that many don't get to see. Super sad Matt is leaving but also super glad that Staffan has come so far from meeting you guys randomly for a video in Sweden and now going on all of these adventures with the team. This is due to China's history of poverty. It used to be so bad everywhere, that having something to eat was never guaranteed. Asking someone if that had eaten that day is a more sincere way of ask "How are you?" to the Chinese, and they actually cared if you ate of not.

It's like going to a shopping mall in the United States and feeling intimidated because there are mall rent-a-cops walking around. It goes to show that when you visit foreign countries, you should leave your preconceptions behind.

Indoctrination works from all sides so there's obviously some people with preconceived ideas about the East and the West, but Yes! Chinese people are very friendly. But some foreigners will take advantage of this friendliness, so it causes a lot of resentment. And some public institutions in China tend to treat foreigners too favourably. This also caused a lot of resentment
