    Several commenters have pointed out that the painter who strapped himself to a post in a storm was J.M.W. Turner, not Van Gogh. Sorry about that!

    Amazing how many still believe that every colour under the sun can be mixed with just three tubes of paint (primaries) plus white, assuming, as in light, there are also three perfect primary pigments. Rarely have I seen any videos that discuss pigment bias and the effect of that bias on any given mix. Crucial vid. Thank you. Re Turner and the ship's mast, I can highly recommend Tim Spall's portrayal of the artist in a film called...Mr. Turner.

    There is a scene in Lust for Life (Kirk Douglas bio of Van Gogh) where he paints hanging on to a tree in a storm...so maybe writers added some artistic license there. Great mixing video. Several artists recommend the split palette and it does save a lot of money! Thanks!!

    I’m kinda late because, ya know, sleep, but this was so useful for me! I just started using acrylics, and so far they’ve been good but this video helped me out sooooo much. Thank you! I was also wondering if acrylics dry fast? A lot of times I end up painting and going to fast because I never know if the acrylics will dry.

    • @kirstenpruitt131
      @kirstenpruitt131 5 лет назад

      ya local spoopy gay you can try adding a retarder to your paints or just have a spray bottle filled with water on hand to spray it when it starts going dry. from experience, i find the paints don’t dry too fast, it takes a few hours unless you’re mixing tiny swatches of paint

  • @burnts1enna

    Hi Michael, just a couple of points. It was Joseph Mallord William Turner who strapped himself to the mast of a ship during a raging storm at sea. Also, why do you not follow Gruppé’s inclusion of orange on your palette? With orange it is so easy to mix infinite varieties of cool and warm greys. I enjoyed your video. Thanks for posting!

    • @chamberlainpaintings
      @chamberlainpaintings  5 лет назад +2

      Ah yes Turner! I had heard it was Van Gogh. I'll correct that info in a future video. I included Cad Orange on my palette for many years but found I wasn't using it. I much prefer the results when I mix my own.

    The reason the purples aren’t ‘true’ in this demonstration is because RED is not a primary colour, though rich and varied violets, purples etc can easily be made using a MAGENTA colour. Also magenta, mixed in appropriate amounts, makes beautiful luminous greens and browns.
