You are not watching Rugby, you are watching Rugby League, there is a massive difference and don't know why no-one in the comments has explained that to you. It irritates Australians when League is called Rugby.

I don't think anyone was overly bothered by the adds on the field. There are never any commercials while the ball is in play and the play stops only rarely, and normally not long enough to play an add. And often no adds but after tries and at half time. Unlike NFL that stops every couple of minutes. So I think everyone realises that the game has to make money. BTW the game your dad told you about was almost certainly Rugby Union. Rugby league is a different game and only in the north of England is it called Rugby. In Australia we refer to it as League or Rugby League, never Rugby - except in Victoria, where they don't know a lot about the sport.

The adds aren't even there painted on the nrl field, their just computer generated images that can only be seen on television.
The only sign painted on the fields is the NRL logo.

A scientist and sports medicine expert did a comparison in the 1990's (before head concussion rules) and his team found the lack of helmets and pads meant lower level injuries. By removing the metal you remove the severity! He compared Rugby Union, Rugby League and NFL.

In 1908 rugby league officially started in Sydney and in the north of England 13 years before that where it was called Northern Union.. Normally rugby league is not called rubgy in Australia that term is used more for the 15 man game of Rugby Union which although gets some good support is nowhere near as popular with spectators. The NRL or National Rugby League competition only began in 1998 after the Superleague war ended before that the top competition was being run by the NSWRL. The shoulder charge has now been outlawed from the game and some of those tackles not involving arms in the video would now result in the player being to the sin bin for 10 minutes as well as a possible suspension. If it was deemed to be an intentional attack to the head it could even result in the player being sent straight from the field followed by a long suspension.. I went to a Stanley Cup game in Montreal between the Canadiens and the Maple Leaves they certainly hit hard and there was no quarter given but at least those guys have a bit more padding and helmets as protection in both League and Union they dont.

'Get that into ya' is a common phrase in Australian sport, in this video you heard it from about 3 or 4 different commentators & in Australia you'll hear it in multiple different sports. The shoulder-charge used to be legal up until a couple of years ago, so you'll see it all the time in the older clips

Shoulder charges (checks) aren't legal anymore but where about 10 years ago. You now need to make a genuine attempt to wrap with the arm, but the initial point of contact can still be the shoulder. The sport has had a massive crackdown over the last few years due to fears around concussion/CTE which means we'll never see many of these hits again as anything which even looks like it makes contact with the head (primary or secondary contact) is penalised, both in game and via fine/suspension.

Mate, Downunder, Ozzie, and New Zealand we may be small in population, NZ about 5 million, 3 million Kiwis and as for the other 2, that is a different matter, and about 25 million for Ozzie. Every contact sport you can name we have or have had a former World Champion, from Boxing to UFC to the All Blacks Rugby Team, just Google their record for the last 100 years. Regarding your query re Shoulder Checks, they are now illegal but the guy we saw at the end who did one on the big guy who as you said, Didnt go over, well the hitter's name is Sonny Bill Williams and he was the King of the shoulder checks, it helped he is over 6 feet and weighs about 15 stone of JACKED body, the sheilas loved him mate. He wanted to play for the All Blacks all his life and the ambition still resonated through his veins but it would entail leaving Rugby League where he was a Poster Boy in Ozzie and Kiwiville and the UK and France League circles where he obviously was on Big Bucks. He did in fact switch codes and took the gamble but first he had to learn the game of rugby and its nuances to League, he would then have to play well enough to get noticed and picked for bigger teams. The dude is a training fanatic and he made the All Blacks within a couple of seasons, Skills Sonny. He also started Boxing and has some high profile fights where he had some wins against some hard men that people thought whip his butt, all on You Tube if you want a look and you will also see what a fine physique he has. Renee Ranger was a GREAT tackler and also when he ran with the ball he took a power of stopping. Here is one of his vids to save you time but he has a lot out there because folks just loved to watch him and tape him. Enjoy. There are a few to choose from and you will see them at the end of the vid. I chose this one cos it's the longest one there. ruclips.net/video/9ZK-1ierdlE/видео.html I hope he piques your curiosity and you find more of him, especially when he played for the All Blacks he pulled of heaps of try saving last line of defense tackles against the top teams in the world and also his hits in midfield where he bent guys like the letter L. CRACK you could hear them on tv, ooh that gut feeling...it ain't nice. Look forward to seeing more of your work, eh. We Kiwis say Eh a lot as well as you guys do. GG.

One benefit of those ads on the ground was that you could still see the run of he game. Previously the TV broadcast would often cut away from the action to show a ad or series of ads and the TV viewers would miss key plays or events in the game.
There are youtube videos out there which show some of the big hits from top level professional Women's Rugby League and Rugby Union that can look as huge and as exciting as the men's game. As the saying goes "The meek might inherit the Earth but they will never succeed at playing Rugby".
Shoulder charges with the point of the shoulder is severely penalised in the modern game. The tackler must now be seen to attempt to wrap their arms around the ball carrier during first contact in a tackle and any contact by the tackler above the ball carrier's shoulder can expect to be penalised even if the ball carrier lowers their head or whole upper body just before impact. There are also penalties for tackling or hitting a ball carrier in mid-air or off the ground in most instances, and for tackling a player late when they have already disposed of or passed the ball on.

In fairness, NRL, AFL and Union have rules about head high tackles, taking out legs in the air, shoulder barges etc. NFL doesn’t (or at least doesn’t seem to) so the padding is probably essential to make it safer, though they still have some pretty bad injuries.

Just a quick word the NRL is totally different from Rugby....it's a different code... National Rugby League was a spin off from Rugby about 70 years ago or more. Both great games but yeah not the same with different rules etc. The rules have changed in as much as it's an offence if you hit a player above the shoulder and contact the head....also shoulder charges are also banned and players can be sent off etc. One of the best players in attack and defence was Greg Ingles (GI) this is when he played for the mighty South Sydney Rabbitohs,,,, I know you'll appreciate this ruclips.net/video/nv4zJQSLEmE/видео.html
