I love the way Niles sits there at the end thinking “what the hell just happened?” He has loved her for so long and has worked to move past her that this situation causes him to freeze up instead of freak out.
I really liked them as a couple, and they had some fantastic episodes together after they finally got together. Unfortunately, the last couple seasons suffered from some bad writing, but David Hyde Pierce and Jane Leeves always had great chemistry on-screen no matter what.
Its because people missed the will they wont they part of the show. I was always happy they ended up together. Wasnt happy about the whole fat and fat camp story line but that was the 90s.
@@matthew9326 The fat camp storyline came about because Jane Leeves became pregnant in real life. She was going to give birth in middle of the filming of the season. Rather than have the pregnancy in character or tried to hide it, they used the “fat” plot line to explain her weight gain. Then the fat camp to explain her weight loss. Personally I loved that they embraced the relationship and showed the up and downs.
Sam Vidas These scenes are great. And what’s funny is rewatching the show there are so many times when one of them would tell Fraiser something the other had told them earlier, like when Daphne told Fraiser what Niles had gotten Martin for his birthday. It makes you realize they did a good job of planting the idea that they see each and other and talk more often then what is simply shown on the show. And it’s done in a wonderfully casual way, like they were just planting the seeds.
I think Daphne loved Niles for a lot longer than we think, she was in denial and thought he would never look at her cos she isn't posh but when she found out he did like her from a doped up Frasier she panicked cos she never dreamed he would and she was already engaged.
I agree. There are many times before season 7 that point to Daphne's attraction to Niles, even if she wasn't acknowledging it herself yet. But in the episode Back Talk, where Frasier let's it slip how Niles feels to Daphne, it's very clear she had liked Niles already because her immediate reaction to that news is so different from her previous notion that it was Frasier who loved her.
Jane Leeves said in an interview that she was attracted to Niles but figured he wouldn't go for someone like her since he was too posh and preferred the finer things in life, which is why it was a complete shock to find out she actually had a chance with him.

@@tonymccaul7159 I think you have to watch the episodes in sequence to appreciate the friendship that Daphne built up with Niles over the years - so for example she would go to Niles for help and advice as a friend. If that wasn't laying the foundation for a happy relationship I don't know what was!
This scene is one of many that illustrated how on point the writing for this show was. They pull us in as observers viewing her reaction making their attraction obvious to us but still questionable to the characters themselves. You can't help but root for their inevitable joining. Brilliant!
You know, it feels strange watching these episodes where Daphne has found out how Niles truly feels about her, but she keeps quiet about it (apart from telling Roz in "The Fight Before Christmas") until near the end of Season 7. Because Niles and Daphne have basically switched roles at this point. Daphne knows Niles' secret and is beginning to develop feelings for him, but Niles is completely oblivious (even though he kind of suspects something at the end of this scene and mentions it to Frasier in the next scene).
@@newperve I like how they did that. They never said anything to suggest Martin knew, but then in the season finale it turns out he has noticed everything. He was a detective, you know.

@Sakredrok well I think at the time he was dating Mel and Dapne was engaged to Donnie. So real in fact that the lack of audience reaction to Frasier giving away Niles' feelings for Daphne had me rewind it several times to check I hadn't misheard! I think they must have had a useless audience in that night!
Considering how the roles were now reversed, it would have been appropriate for Niles to use a Frasier-ism..."Daphne, what are you doing? " Frasier said that to Niles every time he saw the two in a overly-comfy situation...
