- Shining Pokémon are a type of Pokémon found in the Pokémon Trading Card Game that depict the alternate color variation of a Pokémon. All Shining Pokémon are Basic Pokémon. These cards were first Introduced in the year 2000 in the set, Neo Revelation, as Secret Rare cards. The first two Shining Pokemon cards to be printed were Shining Magikarp and Shining Gyarados.

For those wondering why this was re-uploaded: There was about 3 minutes of the original video that was.. umm... largely uncredited information from 3 seperate blogs. So I ran the script through a plagiarism checker and cut those parts out completly, which thankfully was only just the intro of the video. I then re-wrote a new intro and edited it together to connect to the rest of the video full of actually original writing which is what I pay my writers for.
Normally this is not an issue so it slipped by a lot of people before the video went live. Thankfully yall were really nice when pointing out the mistake and I was able to take the video down quickly.
Silver lining: 3 whole minutes of new content for repeat watchers!
Definitely a really good thing to recognize the mistake and admit it. A lot of people on youtube make a habit of exactly the same thing and just get sneakier when people call them out
Have you run your other scripts through a plagiarism checker in case this problem wasn't limited to just that one video?
It's intresting how they basically revisited this exact idea recently with Radiant Pokémon and a few of those have become staples in standard.
radiants got discontinued
@@ich3730 they’re still going?
It was also revisited during Sun & Moon era with Prism Star.
@@ich3730 The last few radiant pokemon will be out with Crown Zenith
@@ich3730 not just yet. VStar Universe/Crown Zenith will have the last 2, and all of the Radiant pokemon will be legal until the F regulation mark is rotated out.
I remember hearing about these as a kid and being confused because we already called every holofoil card "shiny".
I pulled a shining Raichu back in 2000 and it was the coolest thing ever to me (I was about 11). I had a blast making a deck around it to stack it with water energy and blast away benched ‘mons. Not the most competitive card but we were young and dumb and I still really like the flavor of the cards and their wonky energy costs.
It's interesting that Shining Genesect and Volcanion have seen play in the gym leader challenge format and knowing they had some history of people trying to make them work in the current meta they were in.
The shining pokemon are perfect for the gym leader challenge format because they both share the same limitations (only one copy of each pokemon is allowed, and only pokemon that give 1 prize card when defeated).
@@mrcombustiblelemon2902 In spirit I suppose, but the Shining Pokémon revival don't have a rule. They are basically regular Basic Pokémon with a name that references an old mechanic.
@@nmr7203 the middle group of shining pokemon aren't limited to one and don't have a rule box
Multiple energy type requirements definitely doomed this mechanic the first go-around, and while the second abandoned that idea, there wasn't a need to. If you're familiar with the Dragon type, that type never received its own basic energy, and instead used multiple types, but thanks to Double Dragon Energy in Roaring Skies, it made Dragons rather playable, not meta, just playable to work around that. I think it would've been cool to have Shining Energy or something akin to that, but alas I'm glad they've fixed the mechanic with Radiant Pokemon.
I mean, Shining pokemon in their original kinda "one per deck" deal have come back as of late, just under the name of "Radiant" pokemon.
although it will be interesting to see if they make it into the Scarlet / Violet era of cards since as far as i know they are pretty recent.
cant say if theyre good though since I just prefer to collect them for the art n such.
I think the newer SV pokemon speciality will be based on tera forms. You know, a lot like delta species... Pokemon with their types changed. But seeing evolution mechanic getting revisited for returning ex pokemon, i feel like it might come back as a little bit closer to break pokemon. Like putting a special tera form card on one of your pokemon. Would be so cool and fun if they tackle that mechanic in the game :)
Only the real ones saw this video on it's first publishing
I saw it
Or you know, have jobs
Real mentality disabled people who bother like your comment
I saw it when it was being edited
True
At least Shining Pokemon got a good successor in "Radiant Pokémon", who are the old format Shining Pokemon (one per deck) but were actually good enough to justify their one-per-deck rule. Particularly standout examples include Radiant Greninja and Radiant Charizard.
It's kind of precisely because they balanced the power level with their 1 card rule in mind that made Radiants good.
With the Shining Pokémon revival, since they're basically just normal Basic Pokémon that don't evolve, Creatures R&D intentionally powered them at the same level since they had no other characteristics. They had a low chance to be good in the first place.
With Radiant Pokémon, R&D made the condition to "compensate" for the fact that they are stronger than your average single prize Basic Pokémon that don't evolve. So you can only have one of them, but they often have pretty viable attacks or Abilities.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the Pokemon Star from the Advanced era of Pokemon TCG which were practically the same card type. I can't remember if they were good or not because I haven't played a lot of that series. But I think I remember that the water typed Star Mew was good.
Latias star and Rayquaza star also saw a lot of play. The cards were generally just collector cards but a few did see success where they could be feasibly played (such as Holon engine decks)
Umbreon Star and Jolteon Star were both very good as well
Jolteon star had gust of wind as its ability, which was amazing, and wouldn't return again until we got Luxray GL Lv. X
Don't forget the red Gyarados made purely for trolling.
It could work with Delcatty ex, if the Delcatty weren't an ex, or even if it had more than 90 HP.
I'm quite sure there weren't legal cards that could force your opponent to use your attacks, or that card would've been lethal.
I only just realized that this is also DuelLogs lmao. I’m now convinced that this channel was started because they couldn’t believe why the chip chip ice axe was banned.
HAHA EXACTLY
Worth mentioning is the Shining Gyarados from Holon Phantoms, which comes with a suicide attack that shaves your entire deck down to the last card.
I guess it could be used for trolling if there were (legal) cards that force your opponent to use your attacks or do something to that effect, but I'm not aware of any at that time.
You could also troll with it using Delcatty ex's Upstream for an infinite loop, but the problem is that the Delcatty is an ex with only 90 HP, so you are likely to lose in prize trades.
Loving all the pokemon content! It would be great if you made a video covering the fan made Gym Leader Challenge format :)
God I remember trying to make Shining Genesect+ Venusaur work back in 2017/2018, was a ton of fun to play but never was able to keep up with zoroark and buzzwole. Still one of my favorite decks I ever played and I was so hyped when I saw Harrison Grandish do so well with it at that one regionals
The only true way to play shining pokemon is to throw glitter in your opponents eyes when you play them
I personally think shiny pokemon should be in the TCG, but not as a mechanic. I think it would make perfect sense for holographic cards to be shiny.
A video on ancient traits would be cool. that's a pretty obscure mechanic starting in Primal Clash that was pretty big then it never came back.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the Gold Star Pokémon cards from the ex era. Mechanically they’re like the original Shining Pokémon, and based on the 2008 championship deck reprints they saw some play.
I realise I was drunk yesterday but I could have sworn I watched this video yesterday. Am I remembering things incorrectly? Or is it a reupload?
They reuploaded it, there was a large part of the script that was heavily plagiarized from a blog, so it was removed.
@@MozillaFennekin Ohhhh okay.
3:18 that Venusaur is a combination of my two favorite cards ever, the OG Venusaur and NeoGenesis Meganuim that made 1 Grass Energy count as 2.
You could explain the mechanics of 2-types pokémon, released in Steam Siege expansion! I know there was other ways to in the past to make 2 typesw pokémon, but don't remember.
"Are you ready for Round 2?"
My Shining Mewtwo is the only card i still own from back in the day playing with my brother and classmates. As one of my most prized possessions, naturally I use it as a MTG token
Shinies in the videogames have minimal combat perks compared to normal versions. They could just have made the shinies an ultra rare recolor - something like 1 copy per 1000 whole boxes of sealed product and Pokemon fans would still be psychologically compelled to pay big dollars for them.
You should make a video about better versions of previous mechanics, like what radiant is to shining and Vstar is to Vmax.
Radiant Pokemon and Trainer Gallery shiny Pokemon with no special name: Allow us to introduce ourselves
A bunch of Shining Pokemon are important in Gym Leader Challenge. Some you don't see so often, but most grass decks play Shining Genesect for its high HP and damage potential in the format. Water decks often play Volcanion for the spread damage (or used to because of the recent AR Kyogre ban). Shining Mew also has its place in Psychic decks because Psychic often revolves around being behind on prizes in the early game. Shining Ho-oh is also sometimes played instead of regular Ho-oh in Fire decks to preserve energy in case the opponent gets the knockout.
As a Pokemon TCG RUclipsr and player, hearing the way you talk about the game differently is super interesting and unique but also sounds so off to me
when the plagiarising is sus
It is weird singling out shining Pokemon amongst the many more successful iterations of this mechanic. A lot of people are talking about Radiants, but prism Stars and especially star Pokemon were very successful in their day. The Eeveelution stars were seen in a variety of decks for their damage counter manipulation effects and Mew star was the first iteration of attack stealing we'd see. Something that gets a would see even more play from Mew Prime to Fusion Strike Mew.
Celebi in general, produces some very useful cards because being able to use attacks from your previous forms is a super useful effect that did see some play with Luxray trainer lock even if it wasn't that much
This is interesting!
No mention of pokemon star from the EX era? I think those would be worth exploring.
Especially Jolteon Star, which had gust of wind as its ability/ poke power
@@DKQuagmire Jolteon was 1 damage counter on both active mons. Tauros had gust of wind as a poke piwer
With malamar, is once per malamar per turn, for example if you have 2 malamar out you can use it twice (one per malamar) since it says "once during your turn"
Fun video idea!
It's another ban list video but with the newest format. GLC (Gym Leader Challenge).
I think it would've been waaay cooler if there wasnt special shiny Pokémon cards, just the regular cards with shiny colors every few hundred packs, like in the games
I wonder if you can make a video about the Pokémon Trading Figure Game or it’s 2016 mobile release Pokémon Duel which ended service in October 2019 and why it wasn’t it didn’t catch wind like the tcg or other mobile games.
Charizard would likely fit a Failed cards episode, possibly Tyranitar as well
You could have also included star shinies from the Legend Maker era that were a similar series of rare cards, with also the limitation of only 1 per deck, but usually nowhere near as strong to justify using them (eg: Regice had a good move, but very expensive and only good when opponent was about to win, while the card only had 90HP so it was begging you to throw the game)!
Do pokemon Stars (With a symbol) also counts as an attempt to rework Shining Pokemon?
If you made a channel on the Digimon card game I would love you forever
Not a failed mechanic! the reason why is because there’s nothing special about being a shiny, Pokémon TCG, and in the video games, there’s still nothing special about being shiny, except from being rare, the TCG brought us shining Pokémon in a beautiful way, and that is collectability. They just collectibles. they’re not necessarily designed to be good or competitive anyway And the fact that some of them just so happened to Work okay and they were good enough that just makes them good enough collectables.
And today we have radiant Pokémon which are limited to one per deck and some of them are pretty good, but only limited to one copy per deck to show off how rare they are to emulate their reality in the game they’re fine. they’re not meant to be big game breaking powerhouses. They’re just meant to be nice little support cards and that’s good enough. Again, they’re not meant to be a big powerhouse compare of card. They’re just meant to be something nice for the collector. The fact that any of them saw any compare of play at all lucky but it’s not relevant.
I have a radiant heatran and I love it and it sets in a binder on the front page and it just looks good. Radiant Greninja in my Glaceon Vstar what are type toolbox deck.
Only one I own is Shining Charizard. A friend in middle school gave me one in a top loader because he had 2.
Shiny Pokemon are not completely dead. Just reworked. Radiant pokemon is the current form of this mechanic and there is at least one splashed into every deck
like the improved genesect prounounciation
They could have done it simpler. Just change already existing new cards with their alternative color. So if a card is good its shiny will be an even bigger collector item. Cause shiny Pokémon played exactly the same so it should have been released just the same.
I used to have shiny Magikarp and shiny Gyarados long time ago
One idea i have to bring back shining pokemon is just do what they did for the lost zone
Deja Vu I've been in this place before 🎶🎶
Wait, I don't get it. Why would heavier healing cards counter jirachi?
Sorry but i'm not really pokemon cards boy i don't understand how to play pokemon cards, infact i don't have them. Hi, new subscriber from Indonesia.😊
Its so odd watching these, as you can tell the youtuber never played Pokémon
The newer shining Pokémon see some play in glc
What's wrong with the old vid?
...Am I having a senior moment or was this a reupload?
They weren't a failed mechanic because they did exactly what they were intended to do: convince people to part with their money in exchange for mountains of cards.
Shiny garados ex and mega garados ex ?
Is this a reupload?
wouldnt Pokemon ⭐️ from the RSE era also count as shiny pokemon?
its more to do with the Prefex. All Shining Pokemon are Shiny but not all shiny pokemon are Shining
Why are they called Shining, not Shiny? I mean I like the sound of the word more personally but it's just a weird choice
actually I suppose when those first ones were introduced the 'shiny' name wasn't nearly as well known as today
The term "shiny" wasn't official until Gen 4.
Archaic=Arceus
This is supposed to be constructive feedback, I'm not trying to be a dick here. You might want to look up some of the pronunciations of Pokémon while you're recording the scripts. Some of these either sound like you've only ever seen the word written down, or are misread (celesteela being "celestia" in this video stuck out). I've noticed it in a few Pokémon videos now, and imo it's a bit jarring in what is otherwise a well polished and researched video series.
its Duellogs branding!
He just mispronounces things a lot; shout outs to when he pronounced "Trio" as "Try-o" in some video involving Ojama Trio.
