- Shiny pokemon are one of the most iconic features in the pokemon franchise, appearing in nearly every form of pokemon media. This of course includes the pokemon tcg, so join me as we take a look at the history of shiny pokemon in the pokemon tcg.
It’s wild that they called a palette swap “shiny” and set the Pokemon world on fire
Shiny was actually initially the fan term for them based on the sparkle animation when they were sent into battle, it later became the official term
The work you need to put into the games along with the time it takes makes everyone understand why we go crazy over recolord pokemon
They weren’t called shiny until the shiny legendary beasts event for HGSS that was shortly before the release of BW (it unlocked the Zoroark event in BW)
Even earlier that gen there were shiny events that tiptoed around it with names like “pikachu colored pichu”
That Palafin card is SO GOOD it's gonna make me like a pokemon I actually find horrendous
I remember collecting all of the Shining cards from Neo Destiny when I was younger, they were so cool. Wish I kept my Pokémon cards just for the nostalgia and memories, but I randomly gave them all away one day. As a kid I would grow out of things overnight, also sold my Yugioh deck for 50c in grade 9 so I could buy a cookie
My first ever shiny was a golden Magikarp in Sootopolis city. A Bittersweet experience. One of the coolest shinies but at the time also the only Shiny they just give you in the game
My first shiny ever was a Graveler. Take a wild guess how that one went.
I had just gotten the Hoopa card myself, it's so so so underrated and cheap rn I'm so glad you included it in this video
I know, I was so happy that it wasn’t expensive and hot myself a copy
Didn't realize I wasn't subbed; fixed that issue! I can't wait to see the feature length movie for Gardevoir in the TCG haha
When i was younger
My big brother came home one friday night and bought me some pokemon packs. When i opened them, i got the first shining gyrados card.
The next day, mom took me to walmart, where i would buy my packs. And obtained the shining magikarp. Oh man, was i happy when that happened. Good old days
Dude I love your content you seem pretty knowledgeable about the card game and I've been playing competitive tcg for 10 years so it's cool to hear about things that I remember and things that came before I began playing
Love the quality of these videos👍
Just got back into the Pokemon TCG and so glad your channel came up on my recommended! Love your content cant wait to binge the other History/Legacy videos you have!!!
Awesome vid! For some reason im in love with the Shining Rayquaza card from Shining Legends, its just so sleek and well put together. So happy to own it, I want the shining Mew & Jirachi now too
dude that natu video got me into shiny hunting back in like 2015
Fantastic work yet again, these vids are some of my favorites!
i wish they put shinies in every set and made them chase cards like real shiny pokemon in the games. as in, you pull a common pikachu and there's a 1/???? chance of pulling a shiny version. same art, just different colored pokemon. you'll have people collecting master sets where they have the entire set in shiny pokemon form and it'll be insanely hard to accomplish
Thank you for this video!! I’m trying to collect all of these cards and their variants. There were three Japanese cards in this video that I missed. There’s a shiny Silvally card only in Japan that you didn’t mention, as well as a ‘Shining Imakuni’ card, which is just him having a flashlight shone at him. Thank you for the video, I’ve been needing a shiny Pokémon card video since CandyEvie’s came out several years ago!!
I loved this video. Great quality, well researched, and very informative.
The Call of Legends shinies were MY shinies. Always tried to pull them as a kid, but never succeeded.
Keep them coming dude I love your videos!!!
Another great video👏👏 keep up the great work
Commenting for the algorithm but I also like the quality of your videos, looking forward to the next one
I want a shiny elektross from an egg, but I still haven’t gotten it yet. I hope that 2024 gives me shiny luck. Also great video!
another banger. keep up the great work!
They also have other exclusive Japanese shiny cards that weren’t released here, Pryces delibird and Sabrina’s espeon from the Pokemon VS expansion
Kinda wild seeing a complete collection of shiny pokémon cards because I remember hearing playground rumors of shiny pokémon cards existing at the same rate as the games, which was obviously not true in retrospect, but still weird to have that like two decade old rumor finally officially dispelled from my brain.
I have that corocoro shining mew from my childhood :) fav card
I'm not really sure if it counts, but I remember seeing 2 cards of/featuring Jigglypuff with green eyes (one was a Jigglypuff card, the other was a supporter card I think), yet oddly enough those cards don't count as shinies! I think there's been a mix up with people at the time: because the first Jigglypuff of the anime had green/emerald eyes instead of blue, they gave it green eyes on some official artworks, including TCG.
Wait is this a reupload? Or am I havin the most insane case of deja vu
This is the shiny version of the video
as a non-tcg player (i collected the cards as a kid but didnt really know how to play) this was a very interesting and engaging video to watch, thank you :)
Great video, subscribed.
As for me, since I just started collecting I got some preorders for an ETB and a premium collection from Paldean Fates, even with the backlash I just want some shiny pokemon cards tbh so fingers crossed for that Palafin
Saving to watch later! Another blessing from Weeaboolin 🙏🏼
Fantastic video!
My only critique is that some of the descriptions of the cards' appearance are a bit misleading. E.g., the shiny vault being on a 'white' background is true but lacks nuance about the hologram and texture. Or the Neo Destiny shining colors being hard to see is only true for those atrocious digital scans that make the pkmn look more like a silhouette, when irl they are much brighter and very easy to see the colors.
*sees font in the thumbnail*
Ah, I see you're a man of culture as well
Dropping everything to watch this
I love the black and white shinies. I opened a few back in the day and they are quite stunning in person
Very very dope video my guy
Amazing Video!
This video is so well made 👏
I somehow got ahold of shining star metagross as a kid and traded it for shinging star flareon and around 5 years ago I sold it in terrible condition for $70! Gosh I wish I took better care of my things

*stares at my English rayquaza collection*
Yeah, you and me both...
Lovely video btw
awesome video, thank you
I actually have one Pokémon Star and that is Entei. I also have a few of the Radiant Pokémon cards.
Call of Legends is the GOAT
What a video man, that was a really great compilation on the TCG history. Hope many people come to watch it too.
This channel is dope
Can we get a history of the sets from Ruby and Sapphire right around the time the transfer from WOTC to Nintendo?
The mi678tv natu is nostalgic :,)
the background music is from battle revolution right? can someone tell me what song it is
I still have a CoroCoro Promo Shining Mew card
12:00 THAT'S HOW THE SHINY SHOULD BE
What about the common shiny azumaril from one of the omega Rudy sets
Niceu!!!
Can you do lugia next thank you
what’s the song at 9:00 ?
Mudkip Gold star is not the shiny version of Mudkip tho... does anyone know why? Shiny Mudkip is pink/purple-ish
No, black and white had a shiny pokachu in base and a shiny mewoth in like noble victories or something
Did it?
yeah look it up@@jy2967
I will say the art rares and the special art rares are what I wish shiny pokemon cards looked like. Having the normal shiny pokemon just being the pokemon on a white background is so boring. I dont care if its "rare" I want the cards to look pretty!
I like shiny pokemon
Didnt even bring up shining imakuni smh
You also cant get shiny volcanion legally in game which could be another reason why volcanion wasnt shiny in the tcg
It’s a card look up shining volcanion it’s illustrated by Hitoshi Ariga
ARE prism star cards not considered shiny?
Why doesn't pokemon import japanese exclusive cards like Yugioh
so the mudkip star is not shiny?
radiant eevee isnt THAT bad
SHINY NATU
You never mentionrd the light toxicity hydro mmymikiu
Honestly I don’t think I’m going to be picking up he new shiny set. While the art rares are beautiful, it’s not worth it to me to rip packs for a chance of pulling 7 cards. The shiny vault has always been kinda ugly to me, but that’s just my opinion
it’s never “worth it” to rip packs. if you’re hyper focused on a few cards from a set save yourself time and money and just buy them as singles.
@@logannnnI meant it’s not worth it for me. I don’t really care about the card value.
in what way is a gold star pokemon a shiny pokemon?
In the way that they're literally depicting the pokemons shiny color
Weird to hear red gyrados is 'popular'. I don't think I've ever met a single person who likes it, being tied to the story really ruined it's allure
The history of arceus in the tcg please
But half those gold stars arent shiny? Lol
I do not like the black and white shinys personally I like the diamond and pearl cards better
You can always tell how sad a person's life is by how they scream "oh my god" like morons over a shiny pokemon. Sweet Jesus. 😆 🤣 😆
I'm so glad I'm not related to a shiny hunter holy crap the Natu guy was insufferable lol
0:06 bro shut up it’s a mid recolor
I love your content man. Please keep it up. I was never into the Pokémon tcg, but you’ve made me want to look into it a lot as I really like your type of content as the history of games is so important.
