I just got a new guitar last week and it was set up perfectly before it was shipped and it arrived with no issues. (Sometimes a guitar is set up great before shipping but then arrives messed up due to extreme temperature changes and/or mishandling. This guitar arrived totally fine.) I changed the strings and everything was still fine. Then I changed to a slightly heavier gauge to get a little more volume and immediately noticed considerable buzzing on several strings. I figured it had to do with having moved from custom light to standard light gauge strings, although the difference seemed negligible. However, it sure sounded to me as if the buzzing was coming from the head stock, not the fret board. I listened carefully and sure enough, the buzzing was definitely coming from the head stock area. So I loosened one of the strings and discovered that the nut (and all the other nuts) securing the tuner was loose. As soon as I tightened them all up the buzzing disappeared. So since this is a video addressing string buzz I figured I'd throw this into the mix just in case it's happening to anyone else's guitar(s). It's a super easy fix.
Hey great video! My acoustic started having minor buzz on the high E string, admittedly I have an agressive picking style that sometimes moves into plucking that makes things worse. Thanks buddy! I just bought a guitar and got it home and realized it had buzzing on the low E and A. I just backed off the truss rod a full turn and it went away.
probably too late for this person’s issue, but for anyone else who has this same issue: make sure your tuner is at 440 hertz. that’s the standard hertz for tuning a guitar. don’t use apps like GuitarTuna, those capture background noise as well and offer incorrect readings. anyway, if your tuner isn’t at 440 hertz your guitar will always sound out of tune. hope this helped anyone that needed this!!
@@abbynvegas Well it's never too late to help. I use GuitarTuna for tuning, but I've always tuned in quiet room, and I can assure there is no background noise. And for me I think it's the bad guitar design. It doesn't have a truss rod. In the beginning, only the 5th string was buzzing, then 3rd started to buzz as well. Both were so annoying, but slowly their buzzing started to go away and now they're good. But now the 4th string is at its peak of buzzing. I can't adjust the action, although I think it's not the problem. The sound seems to be coming from the bridge pin. I guess it might be that the string needs to be replaced.
Thanks for the tips! I have no idea about guitars and was able to identify and fix my D-String buzz by adjusting the truss rod just with your video! Yaay!
You have a high fret. Use a fret rocker, or credit card/drivers license and cover 3 frets at a time. If it rocks, like a teeter totter, the middle fret is high. Using this method, determine where exactly it's high, the whole fret? Just a spot? Mark it with a sharpie so you know where and file it down little by little, checking constantly so you dont go down too far. If you do, it will just move up the neck one fret at a time. After its level, you will need to recrown the fret and polish. To recrown, mark just the very top of the fret and file the sides making a bit of a curve like your other frets and you should have a thin line of sharpie left at the very top. Only do the sides and not the top though as you dont want to take it down any farther, just recrown at this point. Now take some very fine steel wool and polish it up and you should be good to go! BTW, use some gaffers tape to cover the fretboard so you dont scratch it by accident, especially if you have a maple neck as it will be hard to clean.
Have a close look at the 13.fret if it has come loose from the fretboard. If so, use superglue and a screw clamp. It happens quite often with old classical guitars
@@traytonsorensen8352 Raising the string in the nut is a good way to check nut slot height. Usually with a small piece of paper but a shirt piece will do the same thing like you did. However the nut wont affect buzzing at the 12th fret, only buzzing open strings. When you fret a note, the nut is taken out of the equation.
There are many reasons for fret buzz on older acoustic guitars, but in my mind, no new guitar should have fret buzz after adjusting the truss rod as shown in the video, but this is also something that can and does occur on some new guitars. When the truss rod doesn't fix the problem, that guitar requires a setup and that is fairly normal if you are buying a cheap guitar, but on a higher end guitar, that guitar had better play perfectly with no buzzing when new. The problem I'm having is buying online, there is just no way to tell what you are going to get until it arrives, and when it has issues, you have to make a decision on getting it setup, set it up your self, or returning it. I've gone through a rash of bad fretwork/necks on new guitars that is driving me crazy. If it is just a minor issue, then you might be able to do some setup work on it yourself and be happy with it. If not, then return shipping costs start to add up. The thing that complicates everything is when the saddle is adjusted on the bleeding edge low side which means the fret work has to be impeccable for there to be no buzzing issues. It's easy to fix a high saddle to lower the action, and I guess you can always replace the saddle and go from there to set the string action higher than the original one. That alone might fix the buzzing issues. If not, then it's most likely uneven frets or a high fret or two. This is not too difficult to get sorted out, but on higher end guitars, it is not acceptable IMO. There are no decent brick and mortar shops in my area, so finding a great guitar is really tough.
Question if someone can help: I have ESP with oFR. 25.5 scale. It was setup for 10-52 strings. Perfect Float, all fine, no string buzz. Low action. I changed the strings for 9-46. I managed to get stable straight float. I did all well loosening tuning claw 3 springs since springs were pulling old 10-52, but i got awful string buzz. Especially strings 4&5&6. String Buzz is worse while open. It stops in around fret 7. The shape and tension of the neck is probably changed since i got thinner gauge. Low neck tension and strings buzz, right? In what direction do i pull the truss rods? 1/4 from left to right? 👉 Anti-clockwise? If im experiencing buzzing frets, i need to loose the truss rod? Loosening the truss rod allow strings to create more pull on the neck? To loosen truss rod, i turn truss rod anti-clockwise, right? That's what I'm understanding but i wanna be careful. Asking because of my english with the technical words aren't the best. I easily might've got something wrong 😊 Thanks guys 👍😎🍻
What works for me sometimes, especially when I get new strings is to tighten all the strings maybe 2 steps above it’s note. And then stretch them out with my fingers. And then play a few strums on it and slowly bring it back to standard tuning. Please be careful tho. You could completely break your strings if ur not careful. And they could hit you in the face and leave a scar. Be careful.
It's the high pitch sitar buzz that you can't find that is the tough one. Like a loose brace, internal truss rod buzz, small hidden crack, or a bad internal joint. That's when you might as well kiss your acoustic good bye. Or consider pulling your fretboard off or taking the body apart and resetting all the joints. Or paying someone to do it. 😮😅😢
Hi my name is zombii and im a gamer. But i still have passion for music and your youtube channel really helps me with tips and tricks to help imlrove my guitar skills, and i wanna say thank you!.
I just got a new Alvarez Masterworks and am worried there's something wrong. The next day I noticed a ton of fret buzz coming mainly just from the B string on chords like D, Dsus, Em7, etc. I don't have this issue on my other guitars. I took it in, and the guitar guy said it was common and the guitar was fresh off the boat, so he looked down the neck, made an adjustment to the truss rod, then had me try it. It seemed to be fixed. Next day, it was back. I took it in again, and it was the same thing. He adjusted it, seemed to go away, and so did I. Now today it is doing it again! I tried watching some videos and making some adjustments, and can't seem to get it to stop. Is that normal for a guitar to move that much that quickly when new? Should I be concerned?
Hi, I dunno what the hell is going on with my guitar but the open B string buzzes for some strange reason. All the other strings are fine, stranger still, the string doesn't seem to buzz when I play the string with an upstroke!! The guitar is fairly new, it's driving me a bit crazy. Anyone have any clue how to fix this???
@@adamelafifi6566 Yeah, I did, but it's not perfect. I simply used a bit of folded sandpaper to sand down the string slot in the nut and it sounds much better. Seems the string was getting caught because the slot wasn't cut properly. A new nut is probably the best thing to do though to get it perfect.
The frustrating ones are the sympathetic buzzes. Playing a fretted note and no buzz, but play a different string while still holding the fretted note and the back slack of the fretted note starts to vibrate because of sympathetic resonance. I almost needed a 3rd hand and a therapist to solve this mystery... Wish i watched this before. Still came to the same conclusion but your trick for checking the back slack would've disabled my state of confusion.
You probably took off all the strings at the same time, which let the tension from strings on the neck go, hence the truss rod bent the neck backwards. Adjust the truss rod while the strings in tune. You might have to tighten the truss rod and then retune the strings and then tighten again and retune a few times
@@Greasiola it only does it when i play certain songs, like if i pick instead of strum, and only thru the amp,, so i changed strings, and let a pro look at it,,, but that it,,noting more to do, just have to play it alot until it works out,,,, or take it back.
ok, my high E string keeps buzzing with I put my finger on the 2nd and 3rd fret but doesn't when I put my finger on the other frets. What's up with that. and I've checked my finger positionsksks (I am new to the guitar) EDIT: never mind I figured it out, something about my shirt touching the back of my guitar. Which I guess I could have fixed before and not spend like 2 hours on it if I just didn't worry about it.
This was very useful, thank you. I had this problem on every single note all around the fretboard, thought that I might facing serious problems, then I realized that the buzz was because of my 9v battery inside my guitar. Now I'm safe. ☺😅
I have a Fender villager 12 string acoustic guitar only 7 weeks old. I started getting some buzzing and vibration in the past week. I noticed that the 2 high E strings on the first fret were far too close to the fret and It didn't feel as if I was getting enough movement when I pressed down on a chord I did a small adjustment with my Allen key. My truss rod adjusts from the bottom end of my guitar I gave it a very small turn clockwise and the buzzing seems to have gone have I turned it in the correct direction? It seems to have worked anyway whatever I did. I didn't really want to touch it in case I upset anything on the guitar I could have taken it back to the guitar store but I need to learn how to do this stuff myself and they did supply an Allen key with it . Don't know why it started doing this in the first place as it's new. I also have a Fender C60-CSE 6 string electro acoustic it is nearly 3 years old and still sounds great never had to adjust anything on it so far thanks for the video 😍🏴🏴

Thanks buddy! I just bought a guitar and got it home and realized it had buzzing on the low E and A. I just backed off the truss rod a full turn and it went away.
My guitar doesn’t even have a truss rod but I have the same problem
Quíck, simple and straight to the point. All questions answered thanx!
So I just got a new guitar. The first 2 strings buzz and they feel so loose but if I tighten them it’s out of tune. Any help?? Appreciate it
You mean the high E and B string?
Same
probably too late for this person’s issue, but for anyone else who has this same issue: make sure your tuner is at 440 hertz. that’s the standard hertz for tuning a guitar. don’t use apps like GuitarTuna, those capture background noise as well and offer incorrect readings. anyway, if your tuner isn’t at 440 hertz your guitar will always sound out of tune. hope this helped anyone that needed this!!
@@ChArham-bs1ne is it a classical guitar?
For the nut problem you could use a small piece of paper and put it under the net for temporary use.
It worked for me.
I just bought a guitar yesterday and I tuned it and I make this noise something so I think it’s my technique.
Arrow Arrow same
Thanks for the tips! I have no idea about guitars and was able to identify and fix my D-String buzz by adjusting the truss rod just with your video! Yaay!
My acoustic guitar sounds good but it is only the 12 fret on high e that buzzes what can I do?
For me I just weaved a old shirt behind the nut of the guitar and it worked fur me
@@traytonsorensen8352 Raising the string in the nut is a good way to check nut slot height. Usually with a small piece of paper but a shirt piece will do the same thing like you did. However the nut wont affect buzzing at the 12th fret, only buzzing open strings. When you fret a note, the nut is taken out of the equation.
@@12south31 Thanks. I have a similar problem, so this is really helpful.
This video was really helpful. Now I know how to care a guitar. By the way nice room studio
Great video
And then there is a warped neck, or a neck that dips right after the body joint going toward the head stock.
Question if someone can help:
I have ESP with oFR.
Anti-clockwise?
If im experiencing buzzing frets, i need to loose the truss rod? Loosening the truss rod allow strings to create more pull on the neck?
To loosen truss rod, i turn truss rod anti-clockwise, right?
That's what I'm understanding but i wanna be careful.
Asking because of my english with the technical words aren't the best.
I easily might've got something wrong 😊
Thanks guys 👍😎🍻
Incredibly well done. Accurate and complete information
Tnx a lot ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
My low e string buzzes a lot but the other strings I think they’re fine (electric guitar)
Same I have acoustic. Did you find a fix?
Yey now I know that I don't even have a truss rod. Now I know that it's just my guitar's fault.
3:48 Sounds like you're jamming to the backing track
...no
Thank you! The buzzing was driving me crazy!
Ok, I got a question, what if just one fret of just one string is buzzing the fret in front and behind it are fine
Thanks for your technical assistance Mis Amigo 🎸🥁🎸Great explanation 🎸☮️
Hi my name is zombii and im a gamer. But i still have passion for music and your youtube channel really helps me with tips and tricks to help imlrove my guitar skills, and i wanna say thank you!.
Nice video! I have been searching for this info for a long time.
Mine it's hard to turn the truss rod because the strings are blocking the turning way can I remove that particular string first?
Thanks for this!!! 😍😍
Wow, thanks for the cool tip, Tom Hanks. I didn't know you played guitar

I’ve got a 5mm separation xD and my guitar is electro acoustic and has the micro built in to the low saddle
Yea I’m having problems with my B and High E its so weird I don’t know what to do have you fixed yours yet?
@@adamelafifi6566 Yeah, I did, but it's not perfect. I simply used a bit of folded sandpaper to sand down the string slot in the nut and it sounds much better. Seems the string was getting caught because the slot wasn't cut properly. A new nut is probably the best thing to do though to get it perfect.
Learned something new today. Thank You!
Me experiments with action and that inner rod
Ends up breaking it

*The Buzz* - bonjour Monsieur
I knew it was my technique thank you for showing me the right way
My fender has a loose truss rod and when it starts to buzz I have to bend the neck back until it snaps
Did you cure your lumbago yet?
nairB no mate it’s proper fucked my back right up
The frustrating ones are the sympathetic buzzes.
I had no buzz, and then I changed my strings with a similar gage on my acoustic and now every string besides the B and high e string. Can anyone help?
Crash exactly same i dont know what to do
Adjust the truss rod
You probably took off all the strings at the same time, which let the tension from strings on the neck go, hence the truss rod bent the neck backwards. Adjust the truss rod while the strings in tune. You might have to tighten the truss rod and then retune the strings and then tighten again and retune a few times
Best intro ever, made my day.
What if the B string has a light buzz in it? how do you address one string buzz thats in the middle?
Did you ever end up finding a fix? Having the same issue
@@Greasiola it only does it when i play certain songs, like if i pick instead of strum, and only thru the amp,, so i changed strings, and let a pro look at it,,, but that it,,noting more to do, just have to play it alot until it works out,,,, or take it back.
Well i droped my guitar and i think i might have fractured the fret board and it started buzzing is there a fix for that
Seems like stainless steel frets would solve a lot of problems.
While SS frets definitely last longer, they sharpen the tone and unless you have an old muddy vintage J-50 or such, I wouldn't be doing it.
Am I the only one who notices he has a Buttchin
@@ilovegunnyfnlol1398 very informative on the subject of matter
Fantastic and insightful video. Now I need to adjust my nut and get a fret job. *ahem*
ok, my high E string keeps buzzing with I put my finger on the 2nd and 3rd fret but doesn't when I put my finger on the other frets. What's up with that. and I've checked my finger positionsksks
(I am new to the guitar)
EDIT: never mind I figured it out, something about my shirt touching the back of my guitar. Which I guess I could have fixed before and not spend like 2 hours on it if I just didn't worry about it.
The same freaking thing is happening with me,it keeps on buzzing even tho I'm playing the lower three strings.any suggestions?
i got fixed, the person just told me the saddle was to low, or something, so he fixed it for me, it only took like 3 mins.

Great informative video!
What does it mean if only the first few frets buzz?
The strings were maybe incorrectly put on
Your nut is busted.
Sounds wrong, but yeah
Too much backbow , truss rod too tight , if nut is too low it only affects open strings

Wearing your frets out on a beloved guitar is the worst! I've dressed up my share with home made tools until my daughter gave me a slick set of guitar tools for Christmas one year. 😃

Very useful tips, big thanks
When I plug my E-guitar to the amp , it has the
" ffffffffffffffffff " sound but when I place one of my fingers on the strings , it's gone.
Same here, in my case the amp is like 15 years old and has been blown out probably multiple times.
It’s just excess noise you can eliminate it by buying a noise gate.
I have a really small classical guitar with 15 frets, so, is it the fret dressing issue?
Yesterday i got a guitar and the first hour i was fixing the tuning without knowing anything about it and the high e is gone lol
