The reason why the diagonals look ridged because you cant really use shift to straighten the line so when you use the pen tool and go diagonal it will always appear pixelated. Also happens in illustrator.
Theoretically, would it not be easier to just rasterize the text and choose XUS, thereafter making a layer from cut, and ctrl + click on XUS layer thus choosing it. After this erase the fill of the text and creating a stroke on the *selection*. After this just erase the parts where you want holes in the stroke. I absolutely love the idea, but would this way of *accomplishing the first step* not be easier? This would also make the stroke more clean ^^

You should use Illustrator for the Type Treatment, making thoose strokes and dots can be done alot easier
+Cazbar1980 lights and particles are easier in psd though. but i agree the typo should be done in illustrator
