    Fun fact: I applied for a job as a Senior Reliability Engineer for Office 365 for the Latam region at Microsoft last year. One of the interviewers spent about 1 hour talking about extreme outage scenarios, and how they were building up this amazing monitoring subsystem that upon detecting a server crash could automate a reboot and/or a service restart, depending on several parameters, like the service response time, logging information, ability to reach the server, error/exit code, etc. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't quite test properly for DDoS and the monitoring system was accidentally restarting services on its own. I do recall that they were configuring very tight timings, and a few ms away from that may cause the monitoring system to unintentionally trigger thinking that there was an internal issue.
    PS: Ultimately, they did not give me the job.

      it's honestly wild how intentionally ineffective the report function on Facebook really is. Extremely rigid categories that don't cover extremely important categories. I've heard of instances where if someone is organizing a harassment campaign on Facebook for someone not on Facebook, there's basically no way to report them because you're not allowed to report harassment on behalf of someone who isn't on the site. And some of them are very clearly "yes thanks for telling us, please shut up now." where they don't ask for further details.

      I think it would be better for society if all these were just money laundering. The real thing is that the tech industry is kind of running out of ideas and they're starting to panic at the idea that investors start to think the next iPhone might not be right around the corner. This isn't money being churned for the sake of hiding illicit gains, it's actually worse. People just dumping resources into a fireplace hoping it eventually pays off several times over in the long-run. They already had a few major false-starts with all the Crypto and Web3 stuff that ultimately failed to really catch on outside of a few very sad diehards.
      It honestly reminds me of the late 19'th century having a bunch of millenarian cults. Moore's Law (or the false understanding of it) is no longer holding true, the fundamental assumption of the tech industry is breaking as externalities start to mount. Management gets stuffed with bean-counters and charlatans who don't understand the tech they promote, massive layoffs happen even though profits continue to increase, just not as explosively as they'd have liked. Hell, even when you do meet sales expectations the bean-counters might decide you've outlived your usefulness and give you a Pink Slip Bonus to make numbers that look good to the shareholders. People start putting their hopes in the end of days (the rapture? AGI? The Singularity?) coming soon because that's really the only way they currently understand how to reconcile what they're seeing with what they think must be true.
      This isn't even getting into the weird Effective Altruism scene that got co-opted by people who actually believe in Rocco's Basilisk and insist that it's morally imperative to never do anything to inconvenience the development of AGI, lest you find out that AM can bring you back to life and torment you for the crime of questioning a Tech CEO when you were alive 60,000 years ago.

    Im in Aus and its made me rethink if our consumer protection group has already made them do that here or not, given consumer protection is "decent" here, but also calls me to question what happens if I buy an item being shipped from Amazon US. I personally try to be picky on what electronic goods I get from online platforms and would go with known brands when I do, but this still takes away my confidence in not buying from a physical store instead. Funny how every time AI shows up (that isn’t a frankly pathetic ad) it’s always one of two stories
    1. A small group of researchers focused on a very specific problem, long thought impossible to overcome, used AI to make a huge breakthrough they say would have taken thousands of real people many decades to even conceive of the different calculations just to begin to find the solution.
    2. AI is actively destroying the very fabric of society and everything we’re trying to do about it is either far too broad, or impossible to enforce… without more AI… which is actively destroying the fabric of society… and everything we’re trying to do about it is either far too broad… or… impossible to enforce… without… more… AI…

At least some subset of the AI crowd genuinely does not believe there's any difference between ChatGPT and a person other than that of degree. That *Everyone* is merely deciding what to do and say probabilistically and that stuff like Theory of Mind or Internality is just an illusion.

Not that Microsoft doesn't have any qualified people on the phone; it's just that phone support that actually covers real-world issues seems so rarified it might as well come with chartered flights.

    What more evidence do you need that "AI" is a cash grab just like NFTs than a company blowing it's entire budget on a domain name

    • @prophetzarquon1922
      @prophetzarquon1922 Месяц назад

      Well yes but also no: A major marketing hype cash grab, has latched onto haphazardly slapping "AI" on everything; but it's more like "web" than "NFT", in that it _is_ being used in industry, _is_ displacing jobs, & _is_ getting crammed into everything need-it-or-not. It's the same type of overusage that jargon such as "smart" & "web" went through.
      Everything with automation will be "AI" for a while, until such automation is in so many things, that the term loses significance.
      By then marketing will probably call the latest iterations something like Gen(AI)5000 & conflate it with cornflakes to point out how superior it is at resolving floating point errors.
      Point is, though, all this overhyped "AI" baloney is attracting money like crazy, precisely because there _are_ cost-cutting applications, & cost-cutting is what big business is all about.
