What is SEALCOATING and why should I do it?
1. Sealcoating protects and prolongs the life expectancy of asphalt pavement by filling surface damage and providing a protective layer to keep out damaging UV rays, vehicle fluids, and water.
2. The low cost of regular sealcoating can save you money in the long run. A properly maintained and sealed asphalt surface has an extended lifetime and reduces long-term repair costs.
3. With exposure to the elements, asphalt pavement over time becomes faded in appearance. A fresh sealcoat application enhances the appearance of asphalt, making it look and wear like new.
4. Sealcoating is typically done using one of two application methods: spray or squeegee/brush.
5. Sealcoating accelerates the melting process of snow and ice on pavement surfaces. This helps to protect against water penetration, rain, frost and snow damage.
6. To correctly complete the sealcoating process, the air and pavement temperature is recommended to be at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit for the duration of the application and for eight hours following the application.
7. Prior to pavement sealing, the asphalt surface should be cleared of all dirt and debris. In addition, minor repairs, like potholes and cracks, should be filled and vehicle fluids, like oil, should be properly removed.

Why use asphalt emulsions?
Asphalt emulsion does not require a petroleum solvent to make it liquid and in most cases asphalt emulsions can be used without additional heat. Both of these factors contribute to energy savings. Additionally, asphalt emulsions offer great flexibility in their application since they offer the end-user a great variety of characteristics not found in other paving and maintenance materials. Asphalt emulsions are environmentally friendly. There are little or no hydrocarbon emissions created with their use.

Idk what’s it’s like having a driveway so when he says it’ll last 3-5 years if it’s clean does that mean you can expect it to be perfect for 5 years or will it be on it’s last leg in 5 years
It will still have the dark finish but it will be faded and chipped. Also, any hairline cracks that developed under the coating will break through and become visible. If you have roots growing under the pavement, that can also cause the surface to crack and bulge.
@@xXxJSCOTTxXx oh okay thanks. If that’s the case then are there any alternatives to a driveway that last longer? I figure if there’s definitely expensive options out there but idek what the normal standard for one is.

Thank you. New videos out in May 🌺
Also, the non reputable ones will water down the sealant so it goes farther and still charge you top dollar. After a couple heavy rains, you no longer have a sealed driveway. Be careful!!!!
Nobody in the comments gets why you should do this every few years. In cold/snowy regions it helps prolong the life of the driveway by keeping water from getting into cracks, freezing, and breaking up the asphalt. Plus the smooth black surface absorbs heat which helps melt ice and snow making the driveway easier to clear.
I always put that in the video description.
I live in Ireland no one would do this here not only is it a waste by your point its also lazy
@@garyowens1284 his point literally explains why it isn’t a waste
In some cities they are painting the streets with white color because yes, the black absorbs heat and this is a big problem due to climate change. so i don't think it's a good idea painting it even darker than it already is.
@@garyowens1284 how many feet of snow do you get in Ireland every winter? Cuz in Minnesota we get on average about 4 to 10 ft sometimes more also you dont want water to get under to asphalt when it gets -20 degrees Fahrenheit for a month straight thats how you get pot holes. And when the driveway costs around $10,000 to replace you kinda want to protect it.
So oddly satisfying to see that coating spread out like that. Nice job.
My grandparents had this done roughly 15 years ago and while the driveway now is cracked in places most of the sealant is still in place and has made it much more difficult for the asphalt to deteriorate and loosen and is still in good condition to this day.
Seal coating makes it black, I am a contractor it only protects a good none cracked drive way, and cracked or broken pavement will get worst with time any how, but it does add curb appeal
Clearly not a very good contractor… every driveway is cracked, all concrete cracks.
“Hey, I saw that your missing 2cm on your driveway”
*“Bruh”*
No It’s inches
Are you just looking for the negative side only?
The problem is that sealing a driveway doesn't help it last. Driveways fall apart _structurally,_ not somehow from the surface characteristics that get worse every year. It's a cracking throughout the layering. It's not from water getting into cracks turning to ice, etc. Seal coating is an aesthetic thing only.
That's good info about the scammers. Thanks for mentioning that.
😎
The old look was nicer, the black looks like cheap tarmac.

To be completely honest,i also liked the old look very much, but i also agree with you saying that it was awesome to see the change and how good these people are in what they do xd
The old look appears nice, but I am not sure if it can stay that way without binding material like cement.
I think it won't stay that black in weeks. Becomes nicer over time.
Black looks way better
The former ground coating was probably less satisfying to see but it was clearer. The new one is black. So it will absorb a bigger quatity of Solar heat and restor it during the night aggravating the urban heat island phenomenon.
Prioritize clear ground color to participate to cool the street !
Good point! I live in the middle of nowhere in a temperate climate, so I didn't even think of that issue.
True asphalt and concrete are really good as a heat trap and combining with air polution, especially in high humidities places, make cities almost a stove. Just look at India, shit is crazy

It’s asphalt. There’s more info in the video’s description.
I remember when my grandparents upgraded from a gravel driveway to paved and sealed. I had just gotten tough enough to run across that gravel barefoot, too. But it made a huge difference! Easier for us to play on, MUCH easier to clean in the winter, and it’s easy to maintain. My sister goes and helps them wash and seal it every few years.
That’s great. Did you use a squeegee or a brush?
I used to do this with my uncle, Walt back in the day. Only we had a huge tank on a trailer and he would slowly keep pulling it forward with the truck and I would control the valve to let out just enough to work with as I went. You're right about the dirty driveways not sticking. Often times we would have to do the cleaning ourselves starting with torches to burn off oil and organic matter, then we pressure washed and dried it with the torch before then immediately laying our layers. Spraying it sucks, like you said. We tried that once and never did it like that again. Slow, even spreading is what's best because you have far more control of where it goes. The only drawback to spreading instead of spraying is that if you get too much close to the edge it can flow off and into the grass or a ditch, wasting materials. But if you're good you can mitigate mess ups like that. Thanks for sharing! This brought back lots of great memories. Keep up the great work! It looks great! 🙂

I hear those stories every day
Welp interesting business model
Reputable company... heh.
Story time:
My parents rent the house, so therefore we can't control who seals our driveway, that's controlled by our landlord. The most recent time they hired someone, the person came in to seal the driveway, which was uneven, so they came in an earlier time to seal the cracks and put some stuff in to try to get the lowered parts even with the rest, but as a result, the part they "evened" ended up being around an inch above everything else. The sealed cracks weren't eve either. I think you can see the problem there.
When they came to seal the entire driveway about a week later, they got stuff on our garage door, and even on the doors of our truck- we couldn't park it anywhere else other than on the road, unfortunately close to the driveway. That's not the point, though. They did a bad job and weren't careful about what they were doing. All they cared about was getting paid in as little time as possible since they're paid per job, not per hour. Yes, it's understandable they'd be in a rush, but if they don't do a good job, they're not likely to be hired again.
I hear this same story all the time
I do hope that they were held responsible for the damages, or at least the landlord took care of you and the crappy company took care of the landlord.

@@MrSen4lifE Oh, the irony!

Looks great just need a follow up picture of 6 months later
very cool to see this pop up in my recommended. i do accounting work for a paving company that does some sealcoating on the side yet i'd never seen the actual process before
The equipment required to pave is crazy expensive. I had no idea until I stared researching it.
I would pay this man to read me the user agreement for youtube
Ill do some "books on tape" for ya
I would also do that
These guys take pride in their work. Many seal coaters wouldn't edge the driveway and would slop the sealer onto the concrete sidewalk.
Very helpful! Thank you!
You're welcome!
I LOVE YOUR WORK!!!!

GOD BLESS YOU!!!!
Thank you!
it's really cool seeing a video about sealcoating, my dad had been doing it his whole life but whenever i talk about it nobody knows what it is, but its nice seeing some appreciation for it in the comments, it's definitely not as easy as it might seem
It's amazing that when they step on top of it while flattening it doesn't leave foot print
It does leave footprints, they just do it over when they come lower like he did it at the end

IS VERY SATISFACTORY WATCHING YOURS VÍDEOS!!!

Man that looks good, maybe you should open up some classes and teach the county how to do that.
I actually had my driveway done by some college students going door to door selling their service, and it was done right then and there. Surprisingly has held up for 3 years so far, doesn't look like it's going to fall apart anytime soon.
That’s usually how many “small” business owners try and make an honest living by going door to door offering their services. Not all are scammer.
The young kids are hardly ever scammers. It's not till you get a little older when you realize how much more money you get for being dishonest
Because anyone who can pull liquid without making a huge mess can do this literally it's nothing skilled about it
@@donnieharness2 you have no idea what you’re talking about. Seal coating is NOT just “pulling liquid”🤦🏻♂️
@@troymcallister8400 lol no not at all didn't do it for ten years I just dreamed that and if your pushing the sealer your pretty ignorant works better if you pull the liquid asphalt sealer
As someone who's sealed and dealed many bags of weed. These guys do it right!!!
Beautiful job!!! I am a woman but I wish I could have a business like this, but I'd probably be laughed at. It looks like a good physical job reasonably physical and it's like an artwork. I would love to do this kind of work It would be very rewarding rather than sitting on my behind on a computer.
That is absolutely amazing and wonderful and I'm so glad you guys do with the right way thanks for putting this on RUclips you guys are absolutely amazing and good for you guys
Glad you enjoyed it!
Outstanding Job Guys ! I have seen others that would have the sealant all over the grass , sidewalk and concrete besides missing half of the worst places and not even clean or sweep before hand , Very well Done , Wish You All a Very Prosperous Long Future !!!
Thank you
Black absorbs lot of heat and radiates all night long.
Multiple places in my town, as well as my boss, got scammed by sealers... they used the "we got a bit left over" line, just like u said. They did a crappy job, got sealer everywhere and grossly over charged what they originally quoted. It's been 6 months and it's already wearing off. And the "repair" they did at edge of drive way with asphalt is still so soft you can poke dents in it with fingers. We went after them and got payed back, minus cost of product. WATCH OUT. You guys seem legit.
If they did the streets the cities and villages wouldn't have to rip off the streets and increase taxes
Not sure why you don't already pressure wash the driveway yourself so you know it's been done.
Probably because it has to be dry… just a guess and also that would cost more if they did do it- it would probably double or triple how long a single job would take
@@msuew94 Well... they could charge for it.
