Troll Hunters series by Michael Dahl ...great for boys
Beast Quest series by Adam Blade...again great for boys!!
All of these are fairly thin books that are great for building up stamina and giving the children a sense of achievement as they finish each book and move into the next in the series.

York County, PA is the snack capital of the world! There are so many good snack companies around the state. You should take the boys to Litiz to a pretzel factory. You can even twist your own pretzel at Sturgis. Martin's and Utz are my favorite chip brands. We also have great Tastykakes! At some point you should also go to Shady Maple Smorgasbord in East Earl (near Lancaster).

    - "Baseball Card Adventures" by Dan Gutman; reading level = Grade 3-4 level (according to Scholastic Book Wizard). My son (was in Grade 5) absolutely loved this series. If you have kids, especially boys, who like baseball, they'll love these!
    - "My Weird School" series also by Dan Gutman; reading level = Grade 2-3 level (according to Scholastic Book Wizard)
    - "Geronimo Stilton" and "Thea Stilton" series; reading level = Grade 2-3 (sometimes 4) level (according to Scholastic Book Wizard)
    - "Charlie Bone" series; reading level = Grade 4-5. This series was recommended to my daughter (in Grade 4 at the time) as an easier alternative to Harry Potter. She loved the series!
    - Irene Punt's hockey series; reading level about Grade 3. Great for hockey lovers who are reluctant readers. There are only about 6 books in the series.
    - "Ghostville Elementary" series; reading level = Grade 3
    - "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series; reading level = Grade 4-5
The series being mentioned most often are great but mostly early Grade 2 to 3 reading levels. For example, A to Z Mysteries is about Grade 2-3, Cam Jansen is mostly Grade 2, Magic Treehouse is early Grade 2-3, Junie B Jones is Grade 1-2, Boxcar Children is Grade 3, Goosebumps = Grade 2-4. Spiderwick Chronicles is great (about Grade 6). (All according to Scholastic Book Wizard). So in addition to these, I'd look for Grade 4-5 series. I'm finding that level more difficult to find (in series)! It seems that at the higher grade levels, books are often in smaller series of about 3-5 books. Some good ones would be trilogies by Gordon Korman (ex: the "Kidnapped" trilogy) and Margaret Peterson Haddix's "The Shadow Children" series (hers is about Grade 5-6; good for more advanced readers).
