    :P I meant it as they both pretty much have the same meaning - "YOLO" is "You only live once" and "Carpe Diem" is "seize the day". They were meant to be taken (or, I take them) as the same thing - Live life to it's fullest. Problem is, people take it much, much differently now.

    I saw it through my bare eyes (with a solar filter), through several telescopes (again, with solar filters), and a projection.
    Needles to say, that was an awesome event.

    I used to stare at the sun all the time when I was little. I was probably 4 or 5 at the time and I remember being amazed at how at first glance it was shapeless but if you looked long enough you could see a circle shape.I don't know why but it never seemed to cause any vision problems. I've become a bit short sighted over the past year or so but I think that's more due to staring at a screen 24-7.

    We all saw the partial eclipse. 8x21 binoculars - eyepiece projection. Close to the horizon, so this was through a 2nd floor window. Hope to use the ten inch scope with solar filter for the transit. It was too hard to get the ten inch up to the window...

    no. carpe diem is "I'm going to do something productive/exiting opposed to standing doing nothing". where as YOLO is "I need an excuse to do something stupid". (BTW I don't mean to hate on your comment (the internet is bad at emotions))

    Off topic scientific question incoming (I figured: "What better place then scishow"): I am trying to find out what is the longest distance on the surface of the earth at which the error added by the earth's curvature can be disregarded. That is when must I stop calculating the distance between 2 points by simply using the differences of their coordinates to form a triangle, and start using the more complex formulas.
    ^_^ thanks in advance

    Hank, I'm sure I'm not the only forgetful Nerdfighter out there. Could you or John perhaps slip a reminder of Venus's transit into a Vlogbrothers episode or something closer to when it happens? Also, then anyone who watches those videos but not these will know about it.

    well I'm even more confused then I was. I need to rephrase my question.
    I want to calculate the travelling distance (lets assume that it's being done on foot) from point A to point B with map coordinates (45° , 19°) to (46°, 18°), and under the assumption that 1° = 111km. How close must A and B be so that the difference in the distances between them in a flat plane would be a few meters from that when the path is set on the surface of a sphere (well approximated sphere)
    hope this one is clearer

    I saw this and called high school kids going home to stop and take a look. This is one event that we can use the Pythagorean theorem to use to figure size and distance and the students all saw math as useful. One actually said. "Ahh!" and I could see her light up in acknowledgement. Cool science is at our fingertips. (Using telescopes and things...)

  • @ImrazorZodd
    @ImrazorZodd 12 лет назад

    maybe I phrased the question correctly or you just misunderstood.
    Additional info, for my question. the path from point a to point b must go over the surface, not through the earth. (curvature is pretty much useless when you can burrow underground, isn't it :P )
