Concussions are also a big thing in professional wrestling, which is just high-intensity stuntwork mixed with performance art. Until 2008 one of the most manly things a pro wrestler could do was to take a bashing in the head from a steel folding chair. Chris Benoit even allowed people to bash him in the BACK of his head with a chair. When he died, the medical examiner said that 40-year-old Benoit's brain resembled that of an 80-year-old Alzheimer's patient. So now full-contact shots to the head with heavy objects are virtually banned in pro wrestling. How can we get this done for football?
I like football, and I'm glad you talked about this. I think these studies about the affects of sports on the body are very important. Even if only a small number of people go pro, a much larger number play in college, and a huge number of children play sports throughout school. Thank you for talking about this.
I really like how now this channel, that started a few weeks ago to present some themes, is now full of different sections, and releases a new episode in like 2 days. I hope this gets bigger, and makes people to appreciate our work as scientists.
Kids at my high school get concussions very often, and it is a really serious problem. We have a cheerleader that's been dropped so many times that she has to sit in a dark room for hours every day. My good friend hit her head going of the high dive and was in the hospital with a concussion just yesterday. So many hockey players and football players at my school sustain injuries to their noggins as well. Something needs to change in not only professional sports but in schools as well.
I totally agree with you on how the sports leagues need to take more steps to ensure the players' livelihood. I'm a huge NHL fan & 2011 was a rough year with numerous hockey players comitting suicide. Yes, they did suffer from depression. It takes the enjoyment out of seeing a player get hit on the ice or get into fights because there's that fear of a serious concussion/brain damage.
Cool video! Also, I'm seriously impressed at how you've drastically cut down on the # of times you touch your glasses! Only once this vid! as opposed to the 19x in Cavitation...Good job!
I played football in high school and we were studied by wake forest university for concussions. We had sensors in our helmets that determined, speed, angle, and force. All of these which were sent wireless to a main console that kept records during practice and games. About twice a year we were held under mandatory MRI scans to watch and record influences of the brain and impact. We were also given various tests to identify if we already had previous damage with recognition, cognitive speed, and balance. Also questions involving sleep deprivation, moodiness, and sensitivity to light were brought to attention. I am not sure how there studies are going now for I am graduated but it seems to be headed in the right direction.
i just found you on you tube, but your my new ray william johnson but funny AND clever. i really learn loads every time i watch the show. my most loved eppisode was about the tardigrades, they obviosly came from space :) genious
Also, the lack of padding generally mean fewer and less serious concussions, as you can't tackle anyone with your entire weight without hurting yourself as well and feeling it. This is also why boxing injuries went up as boxing gloves were introduced.
Gotta love the brain, not so much the brain injuries. I'm currently in a lab that's doing work in stroke injuries. Hopefully the near future will lend insight into brain injuries and offer better detection, treatment, and prevention strategies.
@TheSage555 For a permanent colony, yes, Mars would be more viable, in the long run. However, the Moon presents a number of challenges that must be overcome for either environment, and we may as well tackle those nearby. Also, the most efficient way to get to Mars is going to be via launch from the Moon, no matter what kind of propulsion we go for. With that in mind, to truly sustain a Mars colony until the point that it becomes self sustaining, we are going to need a semi-permanent moon base.
I just want to say thank you, for measuring things in miles and degrees celcius as well as in metres and degrees farenheit. It really helps us UK dwellers :)
I'm not comparing the subjects, its just a great essay for illustrating how confusing language is if you don't continually add new words. I really recommend reading it; its very amusing, although mostly incomprehensible.
Today in Economics my teacher asked the class if anyone knew what Helium-3 is. I excitedly said yes and then said something like "Isn't it used in medical scanner things?" and he looked at me like I was crazy and moved on to explain it without mentioning what it is currently used for. But thanks, Hank, for making me more knowledgeable!
please....please don't ever stop making this show. also, i'd like to see an episode about drug resistant bacteria! they just found antibiotic resistant e.coli in antarctica!
I really like the 10 minute format of these updates. For users, great to have more info. For SciShow, less expensive / involved (I suppose) to produce. Mo' dis please.
The commissioner of the NFL is taking steps in the exact departments you talk about. He's enforcing fines for helmet to helmet hits, mandating benching for players with concussion-like symptoms and ultimate cracking down on things that jeopardize player safety.
Concussion damage is actually more functional and physiological rather than structural. It doesn't cause a lesion like severe traumatic brain injury or stroke. Instead, chemicals released by the cells after concussion cause issues for the sodium potassium pump, and much of the symptoms are related to a change in energy needs. However, in adolescents two concussions within a relative short period of time (24 hrs usually) can kill you (second impact syndrome). Scary Stuff.
@PaperSoapy Thats a lot harder than it sounds, hits can generate up to 1600 pounds of force and that is only an average sized DB. I've played for almost a decade now and the quality of the equipment has improved, but many time minor programs can't afford to upgrade and use out dated gear. I've had dozens of concussions, many of which I don't realize until hours later.
@Katlingphish I think he really meant NHL. NHL also has a concussion problem as one can see with Sidney Crosy. A lot of effort has been put to stop concussions in Hockey.
Hank I hate all of the common misconceptions on snakes and reptiles in general. I would love to see an episode about them. I personally own a ball python and a bearded dragon and am an advocate for expanding people's knowledge of reptiles and attempting to explain the misconceptions along with illegitimate fears.
As I wait for this to buffer, I'm reading the comments, and between Irish O'Possums, Lamas being frenched, moon pads and slytherin discussions, all I can say is... This is going to be a good 10 minutes and 12 seconds.
Hank, could you do a show on LD50? just something to get out the idea that too much of anything will kill you. You might be able to couple that with something about how all organisms (including humans) have evolved to be environment specific--which is one of the huge challenges of space travel.
Hank, you just look so tired right here. Take a break, man! Also, loving the videos. :) So good! Could we maybe do some on dark energy and dark matter later on? DUDE, NO EDGE.
Hank: 3:40 The NHL doesn't have a mandatory time off for concussion recovery. It's only for examination by the team doctor in a quiet and distraction-free area. It's not perfect, but it's better than having nothing.
That plan definitely has its merits, but the argument against is that manufacturing andy building on the moon would be quite complicated and costly. Fuel consumption would be different, and the ability to refuel and acquire resources would be superior. However, the amount of labour that we would need to put onto the moon would be enormous.
Actually the origin of the term 'Football' comes from the fact that it is played on foot (not on horseback as many sports were back in the 1800s) making it just as much of a football soccer (or your normal football).
@LDraycott95 I think it's the rapid deceleration that is mostly to blame for the concussions, but the helmets undoubtedly help keep the head lacerations out of football.
@ElHasZardo That plan has pluses and minuses. The major negative is that construction in zero gravity and on the moon are very new ideas. Building a base on Mars would be complicated, building a launch facility on the moon would be more so. I'd advocate for first sending the return rocket unmanned to Mars, and have it synthesize fuel on Mars and then sending the crew to mars. More space, and a guaranteed return. I don't have enough characters to demonstrate the chemistry...
@TheSage555 I recommend taking a look at the proposal "Mars to Stay" too. It entails sending astronauts to Mars not planning to leave in several months, but with plans to stay there indefinitely, and create this permanent presence. Additionally because we don't need to pay for a return trip (and fuel is heavy), it's projected to cost billions less.
I think the reason our idea of entertainment hasn't evolved much since gladiator times comes down to a few things. We find artists, musicians, athletes entertaining because they can do something better than average people. We are envious and left in awe because we can only imagine being that good at something. Where violence ties into this has to do with the same envy. At a certain point we want to see all those people we look up to fail, so we can revel in them being pulled back down to normal.
I play High School sports and if you get hit in the head hard you're taken off the field, and then you have to get concussion tested before you can get back into play. It all takes about a week.
You should do a video on nerdy science. i.e. lightsabers, laser weapons in general, superpowers/mutations, etc. But all, like, in the context of comics/ movies. Idk if it would be discussing why they are or are not possible, but I'd really like to see something like that.
You said, and I quote "critical point, that's where sea water stops acting like a liquid and starts acting, like a gas". I'm really interested in that, can u make a show and explain more about solids, liquids and gases and explain further about the point you made =] thanks xx
Something that could be really interesting is about Fusion power plant. How close we are to the technology to be useful, Why it is so much safer, Maybe also about the HiPER ?
Please make an episode about brain function and what triggers it to sleep because it's very interesting and we still don't know what hormones run when you're sleepy, and add as much facts and data about the brain's secrets and what it does :)
@spazzyshortgirl23 NFL is American Football, NHL is Ice Hockey. He is saying that the NHL has already started to implement rules which deal with the problem of concussions and that the NFL should follow suit and introduce them.
This is the first episode of this that I've actually enjoyed. This is no insult to you, though. I'm just very stupid when it comes to science and I've accepted that.
I actually love watching competitive gameplay, I use to play SC2 but got bored of it, but i still love to watch the pros, (yes theirs pro gamers mostly in asia)
This was really cool news! (and sad) Hank, did nerdfighters ever figure out if it was more efficient to get pasta from the moon or grow earth cows? Space stuff is so expensive..
for football the number 1 improvement for safety really is, remove helmets or use leather ones, because all helmets do is remove pain, the damage to brain tissue is all the same if not its reduced but dispersed over a larger area. without pain you do not realize you have damaged tissue unless you feel dizzy, usually you will brush it off because its not much for an athlete. with no helmets or lighter helmets im certain guys wont headbutt each other at 100% strength for long.
I believe one of the reasons there are so many pythons is because owners buy a cute, little snake, then it grows, and they realize they don't want it anymore, so they let it go, not thinking of the consequences. The same thing happened on Boca Grande island with iguanas. Some of them have gotten extremely vicious.
Concussions are also a big thing in professional wrestling, which is just high-intensity stuntwork mixed with performance art. Until 2008 one of the most manly things a pro wrestler could do was to take a bashing in the head from a steel folding chair. Words can not express how excited I get when i see that: a) A new sci-show episode is up and b) When I see it's 10 minutes long. Great Job!
Hey dont bash wisconsin... UW Madison has contributed a lot to science... bad hank
I like football, and I'm glad you talked about this. I think these studies about the affects of sports on the body are very important. Even if only a small number of people go pro, a much larger number play in college, and a huge number of children play sports throughout school. Thank you for talking about this.
Remember when baseball was America's favorite sport we should go back to that
I like basket ball better though
I really like how now this channel, that started a few weeks ago to present some themes, is now full of different sections, and releases a new episode in like 2 days.
I hope this gets bigger, and makes people to appreciate our work as scientists.
Why not turn to actual football? You know, the one that doesnt cause dementia, suicide and is actually played with your feet?
You beat me to it ⚽️👍🏼
+Vijay Baxter
HEY! I SAID THIS A YEAR AGO!
+Breeze Ark did not. Dont try to steal my thunder.
Felipe Nachmanowicz
I so did, 'This is why you play football with feet.'
Breeze Ark if you keep that up I will have to sue you.
Hank, I love Sci-show. It's wonderful and I thank you so much for working on it.
This is why you use your foot for football...
man this channel is awesome. thanks for working so hard at it, Hank.
Excuse me everyone in America , but here's your solution 👉🏼👞⚽️
+Vijay Baxter What is the solution? I only see three squares and in each of them there is an 'x'.
I dont know what cpu you are using, but its an emoji... Foot + ball
Vijay Baxter Thank you for clarifying. ☺
Can I just say how much I love SciShow? Thanks for all you do. :)
oh my god...one of my classmates used your last article for their current events presentation today and you definitely made it a lot more interesting.
Sci-show never disappoints, always incredibly fascinating

Love your show! And your ten word song from back in the day was awesome ;)
I learned about the concussions part of this video in my cognition class last semester! Glad to see it's relevant!
I love scishow. never stop. never ever ever stop.

Had a sub today watch SciShow during lunch. I died a little of joy. And shock.

ad block only gets rid of the random ads that pop up on youtube that aren't for the video

i love the set up in the back what you have your pens and markers in. thats so cool xD
As a former College Football player, and avid fan of the game - Thank you for talking this, Hank.
YES! Metric measurements! WE LOVE YOU HANK! Thanks for the conversions!
I agree 100% ! What you said is spot on.
I just want to say thank you, for measuring things in miles and degrees celcius as well as in metres and degrees farenheit. It really helps us UK dwellers :)

True, but you can achieve plant growth with synthetic lighting, and a moon base is the single best staging area for the launching of any mars mission.
please....please don't ever stop making this show. also, i'd like to see an episode about drug resistant bacteria! they just found antibiotic resistant e.coli in antarctica!
I really like the 10 minute format of these updates. For users, great to have more info. For SciShow, less expensive / involved (I suppose) to produce. Mo' dis please.
Paul Grieselhuber The reason it's 10 minutes is because it was the second episode of scishow news ever. Like ever.
"Ah, swanky."
I love you, Hank.
The commissioner of the NFL is taking steps in the exact departments you talk about. He's enforcing fines for helmet to helmet hits, mandating benching for players with concussion-like symptoms and ultimate cracking down on things that jeopardize player safety.
Scishow (and similar stuff) is the kind of entertainment I like.
Concussion damage is actually more functional and physiological rather than structural. It doesn't cause a lesion like severe traumatic brain injury or stroke. Agreed, it doesn't do much except make players "feel" like they are protected - leading to even worse injuries!
I am going to steal that Scishow mug and all the cool paintings on your wall because they look really cool.
@PaperSoapy Thats a lot harder than it sounds, hits can generate up to 1600 pounds of force and that is only an average sized DB. Are there any more video clips of the creatures from the vent? So awesome!
Hey, I've been in the capsule mock-up at 5:15. It is at Lockheed Martin in Houston.
I love how you take the time to properly capitalize your title. That is something that has nearly disappeared.
Love this channel!!
Hank I hate all of the common misconceptions on snakes and reptiles in general. I would love to see an episode about them. of course Wisconsin has one of those.. its badass like that
@Petteronella I was just going to post that. You beat me to it. Damn you!
@Katlingphish It's also possible he did mean NHL, but with the inflection he gave it it's hard to tell.
Such an intelligent discussion of our sports.
@spazzyshortgirl23 NFL is American Football, NHL is Ice Hockey.

@thosefabuloussocks he means that the national hockey league is already implementing the measures he suggested for the National Football league
You're native to Florida?! I love you more. I grew up all over the south east part of the state O_o
I actually love watching competitive gameplay, I use to play SC2 but got bored of it, but i still love to watch the pros, (yes theirs pro gamers mostly in asia)
I just noticed the anglerfish in the backgroud. is it always there? I approve! :))
CTE has been getting big news in the NHL for the last year.
scishow has inspired a whole new level of "did you know..." in me lol
I like the angler fish on your shelf back there. :D
This was really cool news! (and sad)
Hank, did nerdfighters ever figure out if it was more efficient to get pasta from the moon or grow earth cows? Space stuff is so expensive..
LOL hand egg !!
Thanks for the Celsius & Metres, Hank, we appreciate it!
This is a great way to study for mid-terms . . . even though none of them are even slightly related to science :)
I'd love to hear more about molecule/atom imaging. It's so bizarre that we can SEE them...
I love your show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5:42 says fission, He-3 is used for Fusion power.
