Royal Society: bit.ly/Royal_So...
Films by James Hennessy and Brady Haran
You know Keith means business when uses the phrase "Let's unpack the goodies" whilst wearing neon blue gloves.
Brady, I'm sure you'll find so many interesting things in there that you'd want to take home that it would be easier to just move your bed, computer and camera equipment to the royal society.
So cool, I love these videos
I love them also!!! Always excited when I see a new video up!
starreactor thanks, we love making them
Objectivity This made me miss the always wonderful Numberphile calculator unboxing videos.
Objectivity Also, it appears that I am psychic.
The prefessional relationship between Brady and Keith is really quite inspiring. Brady will show such enthusiasm for an object, and Keith will accomodate him, letting him interact with the object as much as each case permits. The give and take between these two fellows is so perfect. Wonderful to see :) Loved the orrery. As Brady said, such objects were indeed the learcning and teaching instruments of the day.
I think Brady almost shed a tear at the end... Very cool object. I love this channel.
The reverence in Brady's face when he's told he can give it a turn, brilliant.
If the Royal Society were on fire and you could grab one thing, you'd grab Keith. But you'd be shouting out _"Keith, grab the Orrery!"_
Thank you Brady and the Royal Society for making this possible - this is truly awesome. I feel like having a museum a few clics away.
Great work, great video thank you !
Hugs from Belgium :)
it's official, this channel is now my absolute favorite Brady channel, and in the top 5 of my favorite RUclips channels (it's currently a 5 way tie with educational channels).
Great camera work on the transit James. You're the most under appreciated member of Objectivity, but objectivity the most important.
Tell Brady and Keith what I did there!
I like you so much Brady. Your passion for this is so intense, I can feel it and share the love.
These videos provide a great bridge between science and history.
My day brightens a little whenever these are uploaded. Keep them coming!
You should've asked Keith what he'd save from the fire.
Awesome. Great shots of the mechanism functioning, well done.
Thank you for all the amazing channels.
what a beautiful object. loving the series Brady.
I think this object is most beautiful Brady. Thank you for all of the videos you do. 💌👍
This is a seriously cool device. It makes me wonder if the mechanics of such a thing could be assessed, rendered in a computer and printed with 3D printing, so Brady could have a replica for his coffee table.
Definitely could be replicated but I doubt they will even consider dismantling it to assess its construction
Yeah, that's a stumbling block.
SoG Watchman They could CT it though, should do the trick.
Or, you know, go hire a watch maker or whomever to make one for you. It would probably cost a few grand plus supplies and take maybe a month or less. Maybe you don't get the neat backstory, but you get to put something on your coffee table.
Melthornal Or you could just model it in OpenSCAD and print it with a 3D printer. You would need to modify it a bit for the medium, but you could get the gear ratios to work out just fine and it could be mechanically sound.
Brady and Keith, I love your videos. I recently discovered that a Fellow of the Royal Society, Jeremiah Dixon, served as assistant to Charles Mason in 1761 when the Royal Society selected Mason to observe the transit of Venus from Sumatra. However, their passage to Sumatra was delayed, and they landed instead at the Cape of Good Hope where the transit was observed on 6 June 1761. In 1763 these two gentlemen were hired to survey a border in the United States that eventually became known as the "Mason-Dixon Line".
Imagine the effort it must've taken to create that beautiful orrery, making every piece by hand and getting everything to line up that perfectly.
These Objectivity videos are tremendous! Thank you for making them. So fascinating!
I love this series!
Wonder piece of human history. An introduction to the orbits of the planets.
A+ for the transit of venus... solid A for Brady's Jacket
This really is a fantastically wonderful series of videos! I can't wait to see more. Great job all involved.
I love Brady and I love this channel. Brady your the boss.
Keith seems to be a very kind and interesting guy. Give my thanks to him!
Very cool. One of my favorites so far as well.
this is an awesome object, ive always wanted an orrery just such a cool piece of equipment/engineering, and with this one a fantastic history behind it
I'm glad I got to see both of the last transits (2004 & 2012)
I love this new channel, keep it going Brady.
When you introduced the channel, I was a bit like 'Meh... how's that going to compete with the real scientists?' I stand corrected. It's different, but no less interesting. I love it.
Some say "unboxing"
Others say "Unpacking the goodies", which I personally prefer
Oh no, a new Brady channel. Bang goes the next half hour!
Thank you very much for this! This channel is amazing.
I feel like these are absolutely the most relaxing videos to watch! I look forward to many more Brady!
I imagine that if I was ever lucky enough to go to the Royal Society, I would going around saying "This is my favorite thing ever!" (1 min later) "No, this is my favorite thing ever" and so.... I think working there would be on my top three coolest places to work.
4:00 "... It's just a very beautiful object. *stares gracefully at Brady*"
This channel is teaching a much better interpretation of the term "toy".
Keith is my new fav!
Wow, that is truly a very cool object.
Man, I love these videos!!
Love this channel!
I love this channel Brady! Just caught up on them all. This one is my favourite!
Beautiful! I'd always wondered where the word Orrery came from. There is a wonderful one with all 8 planets at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. It's encased in a 60 inch (151cm) glass and steel sphere with the stars and constellations painted on it. One of five made by Michael Sendtner in the early 1930s, it's twin is in the National Museum of ScotlandI.
Keith slightly dunking on Brian Cox is amazing
great video yet again!
Keith for president.
Nice shirt Brady. Go burrrrsss...
On a more relevant note, now I'm looking forward to an orrery showing up as one of the Hello Internet videos.
this really is awesome
Now that is a cool guy!
This is such a cool channel!
Remarkable!!!
Now I want an orrery. Seriously, I will get one!
amazing!
The comment about fire made me think about the damage a simple fire would indeed cause. Man. Security and procedure has to be of tip top importance when you are in that building, leaving a coffee pot plugged in could be a sad historic event.
6 13 20 Hey to the Objectivity Team, I want an orrery too!!! Love it. Thanks for the post. Stay safe, keep calm, & be well. v P.S.: A toy??? I think not!
Is there any particular reason why you number these episodes as opposed to the way you do it with numberphile or other channels?
Now I really want to know what Keith would save in a fire. Or what he'd take to display on his table.
Same!
Brady, you should do an extra on all the things they have in case of a fire.
And now I know where the word 'Orrery' comes from. I'd always assumed it was a latin or greek word. Never realised it was an Earldom.
I forgot to mention the giant one at a monastery in Ploermel, Brittany, near where I live. Weight driven, with gearing all the way down to a clock dial that indicates the century!
Awesome! :)
But will it blend?
You know things are getting serious when both of them are wearing gloves!
Amazing =D
A few people have said they'd give anything to have one of these. Well, I don't know about a venus-transit one, but solar system ones can be had for under 50 dollars (in cardboard), and for around 1,500 you can get a seriously classic clockwork powered brass one (replica, I mean). Ahh, internet shopping...
That is so cool :-).
I would get Newtons apple tree bits...
You did turn it multiple times! Or you had at least three cameras around taking all those detail shots. :D
yes.
Epic, i know its not possible but a price estimate would be cool.
Silly me, not having realized earlier that OF COURSE there had to be an EARL of Orrery.
Another great video Brady :D, I just have to ask one thing: Don't you thing that "a cool thing" is a really generic title? :P
MEgix my plan is to change it in a few days for "the archive" but while the video is new, I didn't want to spoil the surprise quite so much given that the intro is not super obvious!
ok ;)
Brady is like superman of youtube.
Another cool object! Hmm, I didn't know the word 'orrery' came from Earl of Orrery... never though of that.
now i want to make a working replica and give it to you haha
I think I'm not alone in being willing to pay good money for a good replica.
Who wouldn't want a gorgeous orrery like that?
Rinoa Super-Genius Replicas of the most fascinating Objectivity objects would be amazing!!
Queue the fans who have a knack at tinkering and making things sending Brady about 30+ replicas of it...
That would be one more object for your mausoleum brady
I MUST HAVE ONE! anybody know where they sell similar objects?
Are there newer versions of this to buy, same design and everything?
What was the video called where they looked at an Escher drawing and infinite staircase?
can you do something on Edw Forbes FRS?
I'd take the Isaac newton book or the signature book
I wasn't subscribed to objectivity?! How did I forget to hit the button when the channel launched? Problem solved.
This video needs a better title I think ^^ Maybe then it'll get the views it deserves ;)
So if we bring these back we can get rid of Brian Cox? I'm in!
Prettier than Brian Cox? Derek from Veritarrithis ... Verbosium, Veritasium Is going to get jealous Brady.
Hey
CGP Grey probably wouldn't want that huh lol
While it's a beautiful object, I don't think it's what I'd save from a fire. I'm guessing the Royal Society has the first print of Newton's Principia, which is arguably the most important book in human history.
... and we have a box ... and lets see what's in it ... and it's a dead cat.
@ 3:40: Don't get your hopes up Brady... They will pro'lly ask Grey... ;)
crazy they could make something so awesome in 18th century. I hate when people thing that people in the past were stupid or primitive. They were like us.
Also "Venus" wasn't so extremely small in here because they didn't know its size, but because real proportional distances required a bigger sun, smaller Earth and a much larger total object.
Basically they had to make the sun and Venus proportionally small to make it fit in your pocket. It wasn't a lack of knowledge, it was a lack of resources.
Video about object showing mostly two talking guys instead.
I would save Newton's journals I think.
Shit now I want to make one
I feel like wearing gloves now... oO
Ello Ello
If the RS was on fire I would grab the small radiometer and take it home rather than this one!
