Resin is toxic until it cures, you need way better safety equipment if you're planning to do something like this again... aside from being horrified at it dripping onto your bare skin, and the whole breathing in resin fumes - it was a pretty cool project
@@saix_unicorn not sure if studies are needed, since they're industrial chemicals that cure into different plastics (depending on which resin you use). The companies that make them are supposed to provide safety sheets on proper (safe) storage, use and disposal, like you would find in an industry context (though some of the more cheaply produced ones don't have them). There's plenty of information out there about the risks of using resin without following the safety guidelines. There's also a few videos people have posted of how their health has been affected by not taking any/correct safety precautions - one lady in particular who has suffered quite severe symptoms and now has long term breathing problems from the exposure talks about her experience getting into resin work and how she ended up where she is. I guess those would be like case studies.
@@saix_unicornI can't provide you with a resource or anything, but I've read that you can get an acrylate allergy which would make you allergic to pretty much anything made of plastics.
For the best chance at success, use professional quality balloons (Qualatex brand comes to mind) and a slow curing resin for the initial coats. These resins are typically 2:1 mixes and are quite thin so you will want to let the resin sit for a few hours to thicken up for coating the balloon. Slow curing resins do not heat up as much so has less chance to pop the balloon. Once the entire surface of the balloon is coated, then switch to the faster curing resin for strengthening coats. The existing coats will protect the balloon from the additional heat.
@@Dinoslay Actually, UV resin heats up faster and hotter than epoxy. I wouldn’t expect it to work for anything but a top coat. Consider that UV light is what causes sunburn.
@@Dinoslay Generally the resins with longer cure times will give off less heat since the reaction is slower. Look for 2:1 ratio resins also marketed as deep-pour resins. Expect 3-4 days for a full cure of a thin layer.
Great stuff as always! I think the reason the green balloon kept popping is because as resin cures the reaction starts heating up. I’m pretty sure the green shade might have been a darker compared to the blue which would cause it to absorb more heat. I’m also super impressed by the structural integrity of it! Real interesting

Such a fun and entertaining video! I loved seeing how the project turned out! Please in the future better protect yourself! I would hate to see anything happen to you! Additionally, even when using protective equipment, always wash your hands and arms extremely thoroughly and change your clothing afterwards. This is important to make sure there is no cross contamination with any surface, food, or people you come in contact with afterwards in case there are traces of resin on you. I also saw in another comment you mentioned having a young daughter, so this is even more important! You can never be too safe! I only say any of this because I genuinely care. I have seen and heard many people over the years who have gradually become extremely and debilitatingly sick after working with resin without taking the proper safety/protection measures. Definitely not something you want to deal with! After resin is completely cured properly, it is generally deemed safe, but it MUST cure properly for this to be the case, and unfortunately not everyone does it the correct way, so make sure you know the proper method to cure it! Thanks! Welcome aboard!
I have to imagine the artist filled these with foam or something substantial 🤔
Nope I did lots of research and it was just balloons and resin! His process is definitely more refined/streamlined though 🙌🏻
Why? Lots of furniture is just hollow plastic.
@@scrubtug6507 it would be much stronger and would not risk popping during coatings. You could also set the shape as the foam cures, where I’m sure the first few coats of resin were very fragile. I am impressed by how strong ~8 coats of resin is though.
