When I watched some of your video’s i have never checked your views. Today I watched this video and checked it. I was stumped. You sir, you make content that deserves way more than this. Keep up the good vibes. Greetings from the Netherlands.
The main thing about making charcoal is eliminating the oxygen so it doesn't actually burn off. Cody on codys lab used cleaned out paint cans when he started making charcoal. He needed larger amounts for his experiments, so he upgraded to barrels, but it was still interesting. I wonder how a packed paint can would compare to the aluminum foil method. Anciently they'd stack the charcoal in large orderly piles with very little space in-between the sticks, and then I think they'd seal it with clay. The fires were very intense to the extent that it was used as a plot device in a book/tv series called Cadfael. I think well you can buy stick charcoal for art very similar to what you created. I think the one you bought is crushed charcoal with a binder. I could totally be wrong though
this guy deserves the world. When i watch one of his videos (ive been binge watching them for a day now) i just know hanging out with him is the best thing ever. the vibes he gives off are just different.
I’m watching this while finishing my last charcoal drawing for my drawing course. 🙃 Also you made vine charcoal which is different than compressed. Vine is thinner and lighter, and is often used quick gesture drawings.
LOL! As I undrrstand it, Aluminum has only relatively recently bern smelted from its bauxite ore form, like ir only really started being smelted starting in the 1900s. That's super recent compared to iron, gold, & silver. So no, cavemen wouldn't've used Al foil (tangent: aluminum & tin [Sn on the Periodic table of the Elements] are different elements. Calling Aluminum foil "tin foil" is a misnomer.
haha why thank you, taken me many years to grow a proper stache! and thanks for the support, ya it was really fun to make! definitely want to do more like it :)
Hey, I'm someone who frequently uses charcoal as a drawing medium, and I have a few things to say. First, charcoal comes in many different forms, and I'm sure that the professional stuff you got said something like 2b b, or 6b. higher numbers are darker and harder, and it would be more difficult to erase, but better fine detail; but that's not all. A thing called vinyl charcoal is frequently used and it's basically what you made, it just has a different use than standard charcoal. It's used to block backgrounds or make sketches before refining, and I have made sophisticated pieces almost exclusively with vinyl charcoal. Another thing you might find interesting is that with charcoal, it's standard to use a thing called a subtractive process. with that, not only is charcoal a tool, but the eraser is also a vital tool in the process; in that you would spread an even layer of mid tone vinyl charcoal on the paper, then you use your eraser to sketch the highlights of the subject, then you come in and use your vinyl charcoal to block in more of the dark spots, eventually you keep on doing this process until the piece is refined, you can use harder charcoal pencils for finer details, and you can use white charcoal as well to get bright highlights. anyway I would love to see you make a video exploring this more I think it's wonderful that you're still reading and replying to comments made on your videos that are years old, it just shows the love and passion you have for youtube, thanks for reading my yappage, and have a good day :)
Something about your videos make me feel really cozy. Though, the place you live in is also really beautiful. I'd love to live in a place like that. Much love, peace.
Hi Connor, i have this kind of idea maybe you are interested to try. Back in the 80s in my country people used to cook the whole chicken in an empty cooking oil tin. The chicken is hanged inside the tin with a wire, put the tin cover, make a small hole to allow water vapor to escape, then put the tin in fire 🔥 there is another method, they used bamboos and aluminum foil but the chicken needs to be marinated with special herbs. Hope this helps 👌
You live on such a nice place in the world. The detail with the old broken down truck in the back of a lot shots really ties it all together. Amazing, wish you the best.
Can you do a short or something like that of trying to shave the edges of the charcoal stick for flatter edges? Even if you just take the end and rub it straight on a piece of paper, eventually you should end up with a similar edge to the amazon stuff, which would allow for cleaner lines.
Splitting the sticks in half (or sanding them square) would likely provide a nice edge. And I imagine if you used core willow wood (or at least not dead branch wood) and draw out all the moisture or compressed it while cooking, that would provide a more "professional" art grade charcoal.
hi. Could you make a video surveying the nature around your house? mountains, forests, rivers. These places are so beautiful, with your shooting experience, it would make an amazing movie.
I just found your channel and I absolutely love it. Your videos are so calming and they give me a chance to relax and feel happy when I'm going through rough times. Thanks so much, your channel deserves more views.
