    At 11:20 it seems you're now saying the advantage is the respective modes, by definition. have the most chord tones allowing all the diatonic non-chord tones to act as 'passing' tones?' (Is that correct? This is the infernce I'm hearing.)

    Great video! How may we make jazz solo with the mode (inspiration)? How may we play scale all around the neck without linking the 3 positions finger ?

      For inspiration in soloing using the modes check out Kind Of Blue by Miles Davis. It's important to learn scales all over the fingerboard with different fingerings and also the names of the notes. Thanks for watching!

    What pickup is in the bass?

    I am a novice trying to learn music theory, so pardon my question if it is a bit much. When demonstrating the scales on keyboard, playing the keys all in a row, what makes the very next note a "tone" sometimes and a "semi-tone" at other times? I thought only the black keys were semi-tones. Thanks from America

      Hey Johnny, thanks for checking out my video, I hope it's helped! The distance between and two ADJACENT notes on the piano is called a semitone, therefore E-F is a semitone, as is G-Ab, but F-G is a tone because F#/Gb sits between them.

      Johnny, The distance between each key is a semi tone and two semitones make a tone! Just in case if you didn't get what bass lessons said...

    I think your explanation and examples are exceptionally but I really don't understand why one would need to formalize scale runs as modes if you're already playing in key. (8:00 and on)
    All adjacent diatonic tones are a half or whole tones so can't one simply think of scales as stacked triads and then create the feel you want on the fly? If I want a major feel I play M3 m3 ... which you would call Ionian or mixolydian and then I might go m3 M3 ... is there advantage to say I'm now in dorian, Phrygian or aeolian? (What if someone said the rules to play in a major key are: you can't play more than three ascending whole notes or more than one half tone.)

      Hi Randy! Thanks for checking out the video and for your feedback. Like I say at the start of the video this is really an introductory video explaining what the modes are and how they function at their most basic level (diatonic chord/scale relationships). In my opinion the modes can really come into their own when you start to use them on chords that aren't directly connected diatonically e.g lydian on ANY major chord, Dorian on Dom7 chords etc; I hope this helps?

      Like 'passing modes'? ... I will absolutely take your word for it as I'm a beginner on the guitar itself and have been trying to teach myself theory.

      Hmm, not sure what you mean by 'passing modes' exactly. My best advice would be to find a local teacher who can help you with all of this, much better than trying to figure it out by yourself!

      By passing modes I'm making up a term to mean a mode that's not it's tonic? mode? ... not using the V mode (phrygian) with a V chord as you were describing.
      That said (if I'm saying anything sensible) do you ever play in key but not in mode? For example, suppose I played WHWHWH ... on whatever chord starting on whatever tone ...it's not any mode as it doesn't follow any rules for the major scale.

    When do we use these modes...can i solo in g dorian if i have a key as g

    • @Basslessonsmelbourne
      @Basslessonsmelbourne  6 лет назад

      Not really as G Dorian is the second mode in the key of F. In the key of G you can use: G Ionian, A Dorian, B phrygian, C Lydian, D Mixolydion, E Aeolian, F# Phrygian. Good luck!

    How to apply modes in minor key? Example: Am

    • @Basslessonsmelbourne
      @Basslessonsmelbourne  6 лет назад

      Hey there, you could think of the key of Am being the sixth mode of C major or second mode of G Major, so you could try using aeolian and dorian scales.

      I have one that looks EXACTLY the same that is made by Aims. Same sunburst, pickguard, pickup, 2 saddle bridge, same shape neck and headstock, but has an AIMS logo on the headstock. My suspicion is that someone sanded off the Aims logo and put on a vintage precision bass logo. :)
