I fell into a magic rabbit hole after starting magic at the age of 30. It just keeps getting more and more insane.

I labeled the cards slowly, one by one, as described in the book, with decorations and different fonts and placement, using the pips and layout of the cards to guide by labelling. I also associated certain cards with ageist ideas I have about life (narrative associations) and I remember a few based on other relationships like mirroring (5 6s, 6 5s) and coincidence (37 7s, 47 7c) or rhyme. I am a 40 yr old musician who doesn't read charts but brute force memorizes pieces and I was able to get the a good start in a days work. We'll see how long this mess stays in my head! The visual reinforcement fades faster than the associative memory, so far. Everybody is different, I am sure.

Yes, whatever works best for each of us, or whatever associations we have made in our own minds will be the most powerful. For actual performance, the only downfall of visual memorizations is that it takes time think about it. If you can do immediate number and card recalls, it's much faster and easier. (in performance)

@@ULearnMagic Haha, yes, so far a lot of blinking and dead air when I try to practice the effect! My brain feels healthy though and my online chess rating has gone up... Better than sudoku!!

People like to over complicate things. When I learnt the stack, having to remember multiple things for one card just made it even more confusing. So I decided to do it with just one thing to remember. I worked in stacks of thirteen and ascociated each card with a number and that number was the position of the card. Took a couple of weeks to get it down because obviously life gets in the way. Way easier than creating something like The six of hearts is a heart so therefore it means this and because it's a six it means this blah blah blah. If youre going to use ascosiation to learn the stack , one card, one number, that's it. None of this creating stories and pairing them with objects and all that guff. There is no need to over complicate things.
