    Just what I need. I have all kinds of devices but always gravitate toward my phone because it is easy to hold in one hand as i type. But I always have issues with eye strain and battery life.
    Also, I type a lot of comments and exchange ideas, I don't need a color. So I ended up buying all three devices, Boox Go, Boox Max Note, and Palma 2. 😮
    I definitely love the battery life on e-readers. Plus, Google Play for music.

    I think my dream handled device would be a flip-style phone with two separate screens: A monochrome OLED on the bottom for responsive touch inputs, and an e-ink on the top for viewing content.

    primarily using mine for working with open-source software projects (especially Meshtastic and SDR stuff), especially stuff I want to use outside where the usability of e-ink just blows everything else away -- but because the screen is so pleasant to use I find myself reaching for it instead of my phone and putting my phone into hotspot mode for it! it has the same CPU as the NA4C so I completely agree about the snappiness, and it being so easy to root will be helpful for backing up apps or experimenting with Linux software on it.

      Yeah, it's a lovely screen. It really is a pleasure to use!

    I added a popsocket to the back of the plain case. Really comfortable to hold for long periods of time.

    I love the idea of the Palma, IF ONLY it had an EMR note-taking layer.
    The other issue for me, why it would remain a reader and not become a sort of phone replacement is its lack of security and system updates. I am fully into the Google system, but to protect my personal data (email, calendar, chats etc) it needs the latest updates and Android versions, which Boox will never provide.
    But - I keep reevaluating my 7.8" Nova Air and whether the Palma could replace that, especially as I travel a lot and normally decide between the 10.3" Go or the Nova Air. If only the Palma had a pen! ☺️

    Is it possible to install ChatGPT on this device and have it run smoothly? I usually read summaries on it, and I’d like an e-ink option so I can spend less time on my iPhone.

    Tip: you don't need to pay otter for that. You can use your own laptop for transcribe, or if you really want to pay openai api and whisper is 1/100th of the price.

    Great review, as usual!
    I am so interested in this form factor but I have some concerns. It's a tad too expensive, so much so that I wish they made a stripped-down version one can use just for reading and little more: a good OS, no speakers, no camera, for example. I wish Amazon and/or Kobo made a device like this, as I wonder what'd happen should one have problems. Has anyone ever needed assistance? How is Boox behaving about it?
    Does Android 13 need the upgraded CPU? Why was the first Palma left with Android 11? Does that mean this device won't be updated regularly in the future? Will that compromise its longevity?
    Last, but not least, why is everyone so obsessed with it not having a Sim card? Would you honestly use it as your sole phone? An eink device?

    • @filoniz
      @filoniz 7 дней назад

      I think it is a non-compromise expectation. Whether I will use it as my main phone or not having that option is nice. Especially when you are trying to minimize screen time on RUclips, TikTok, and other video content that get quite addictive. Not having that distraction but still having access to people for calls and texts is welcome. Also, carry just one device instead of a wifi hotspot make much more sense.

    Hi! I'm using my palma 2 along side a Nokia 6300 4G. Great combo for my needs. I'm using the nokia for phone calls and hotspot when necessary (or when rarely there is no wifi available), and the palma for everything else . I'm a few days in and I'm curious on how much battery life should I expect? If someone got any other use cases please share!
    Love your content, after two years with my freewrite I descover the palma with one of your first videos and I recently bought it, I'm super stoked! Thanks lots :)

      I would use this device as music player in the car. When I go in and out of the car, sometimes it takes a while for my car to sync with the phone, and sometimes it just completely refuses to connect. Having super long battery life and Bluetooth without cellular maximize the battery life while still using it to play Spotify and RUclips music.
      Having Google means you can also use Kboard, which is one of the better voice types as I tend to type a lot but would not miss the color screen. 😅

    Great review. I preordered the bigme hibreak pro because it’s essentially the BOOX Palma 2 but with 5G connectivity. Same form factor and e ink screen, even has a bigger battery and 8 gigs of ram. Excited to test it out as a daily and hopefully permanent replacement to my iPhone

      I canceled my preorder and got this instead because of the user experience with the original hibreak. Bigme should be called bugme considering how unusable their software is.

    Kit, if I have a smartphone and a Kindle, how large is the space into which the Palma would sit? Does it replace a Kindle for you in your use-cases or does it supplement it? Would I want to go out (walking, shopping, whatever) with my front pockets filled on one side by a smartphone and the Palma in the other? Would I not simply take the Kindle with me (given it would be rare to go out without some kind of bag)?

    In a previous video you were endorsing rhe Inkpalm over this--I actually went for that based on your recommendation. But now it sounds like you're Team Boox. So which is it?

    • @N33k5
      @N33k5 2 месяца назад +3

      It's a matter of how much you want to spend and what your needs are. He isn't really overly team any of the devices he reviews. He is a writer by trade so he tends to go over devices repeatedly to explain their strengths and weaknesses from his own use cases.

    • @orangemc9358
      @orangemc9358 2 месяца назад +2

      Chief, you're the one pulling the trigger. Not him. Always watch multiple videos, read mane store page reviews, look it over and weight what YOU value most. Maybe he likes both, maybe he goes back and forth. Which do YOU like the idea of more?

    • @raficusx
      @raficusx 2 месяца назад +2

      @@orangemc9358 No doubt about that. And as a reviewer, he's going to feature different devices, extolling the virtues independently. But there's also no doubt that one of the latest videos, he compared and unilaterally chose the Inkpalm, which is what tipped me over. I was a bit surprised, that's all. And at least one other person here agreed with me.

    • @KitBetts-Masters
      @KitBetts-Masters  2 месяца назад +1

      No, it would still make sense for you! As long as you aren't put off by android OS, you'll be fine and have a great time!

    I want a great android tablet with an oled screen the same size and shape/screen format of the Boox Mini Tab C. I read on both e-ink devices and tablets. I've never had any issues with eye strain using a good tablet screen. E-ink devices have too many compromises with the only benefits being longer battery life and being able to read outside in full sunlight.

    @6:04 If connectivity is the big letdown, then perhaps the upcoming Bigme Hibreak Pro with the same dimensions and 5G just made this obsolete? Thouhgts?

    • @florismaat6069
      @florismaat6069 23 дня назад

      It would not be obsolete because the use case for the Palma 2 is not to be a phone, it is a pocket sized e-reader. It is relatively cheap coming in at 300 euros, if it would have phone functions like 5G it would easily double in price.

    • @KitBetts-Masters
      @KitBetts-Masters  2 месяца назад +1

      It works well. You should expect a certain amount of tinkering with the eink settings, but yeah, you can make it look good! And it remembers those settings for the next time you open that app.
      I'm trying to resist the urge to load chess on it though.

    • @jacobrichards3728

      Thanks for the advice! And I get it, my main usage for this device would be the reduce of eye strain so I love the idea of using normal apps on an e ink screen.
