Big thanks again to Jason for joining us on this episode, be sure to check out his work using the links in the description, and also let us know what other games or moments you would like to see his take on!
Also, sorry again Jason for all the bagpipe gameplay you had to listen to...
I think bagpipes were an official weapon of war in the past.Beautiful when heard from a distance, but up close, maybe no so much.
At least no one was playing the violin at the same time. Those two instruments do *not* go well together.
Would love to see an episode 2!
Jason is a nice guy and a gentleman. And I love the fact that he has used his money to pursue his interest instead of status symbols.
@@Iscannon The army deploys its two secret weapons. The bagpiper who plays masterfully, and a violinist who plays _very_ badly, and _very_ enthusiastically.
This was a fun thing to do. Always interesting combining two areas, history and games, into one video like this. Thanks to the team at GameSpot for giving me the opportunity.
A very well edited video, I liked the combination of narration and game ,snippets. and excerpts from your own films. And what you said about the trade-off between realism and what will look good in the game. Everyone is more or less aware that this must be the case, but we rarely have the opportunity to find out what, in detail, such a compromise consists of.
Kinda understandable now, how your uploads are so erratic, CEO, Historian and RUclipsr among other things. Renaissance man indeed😂
You are a busy Knight. 😄
Known about you for ages, never knew you were CEO of Rebellion. Mad!
Very entertaining and informative video!
Cheers from chilly old Cambridge!
The fact that Jason has his own (quitesuccessful i might add) game studio, AND they're friends with Jonathan Ferguson makes me really happy.
Rebellion also publishes 2000AD, the comics company behind Judge Dredd
I only know him through his youtube channel and you’re telling me he has a successful game studio all this time? Bonkers (in a good way)
He owns the rights to Judge Dredd too
I knew he must be successful in some way to own such a beautiful property and horses. No idea he was in the video game industry that’s awesome
Why isn't he making a dredd 2012 sequel RN, people have renewed interest in Karl Urban @@celticperspective5183
Same here! Have watched the medieval stuff he makes (really interesting stuff) but had no idea he made games as well.
This was a real good episode, had so much insight in the history as well as the game mechanics 👏
I am in the same boat right now. This feels almost like an "out of left field" situation. Never would've guessed.
Also another comment says he owns Judge Dredd???
Ok, please tell me that I wasn't the only one who watches this guy's channel but had absolutely no idea he was a CEO of a gaming studio.
And great video, as always. I really enjoyed Jason's commentary (as always...).
i had no idea either
He owns Judge Dredd and the comic studio too lol
Only learned of it when I bought his book a few months ago.
I'm a British game developer and didn't know 😂
You are not the only one. I have been subbed for years to his channel. And had no idea.
At the risk of a YT love-in, I love your channel as well Jason :) It was great to have a trustee so invested in the subject and objects.
Cheers Jonathan, we must catch up sometime soon.
@@ModernKnight PLEASE record it! It would make for an amazing crossover episode!
I think I saw you out in Leeds yesterday Jonathan! Almost came to say hello. Love your work too!
Nothing wrong with a love-in, if it's sincere.
I knew that he is also the Rebellion CEO, but I‘ve usually only heard him talk strictly history. Seeing him talk as a game dev, makes him even more interesting. I really can’t stand the “historians” criticising games for being unrealistic, whilst not understanding entertainment and game development. He understands both, very nuanced
that's something I've always found a litle grating too. yes, historical accuracy and realism can bring a game to life, but it's not like devs who spend years on projects don't *know* most of the facts (especially since most games stick to the more well-known time periods), they've made a creative decision to be more cinematic or bend things to accomodate a type of design etc.
I also like that he uses this chance to educate and share a passion for his own experimentation and the knowledge he's learnt
I love how Jason is living his adult life EXACTLY how a 10 year-old castle/medieval enthusiast would imagine how their life might be "when they grow up." Must be nice to be so successful in life you can **actually** live out your childhood dreams lol.🐎
A game company CEO that actually loves and even PLAYS games? He's too precious
I had no idea Jason Kingsley was the CEO of Rebellion. I've been watching the man for a while.
Jason Kingsley is awesome. Love his youtube channel.
Yeah. I follow his channel for years.
He is! His book is great too
@@fpc3017 same, had no idea he owned rebelion studios
@@huntersherwood5665 he plays Skyrim in real life.😂
Totally agree
Everytime i see Jason in an interview i learn something new about him. This guy is secretly behind everything i love
Would love to have the option in games to choose whether you want the cinematic or the realistic HE explosions
that's actually a good idea!
Please make more videos with him. This was really interesting.
Wow, I seen a few of this guy’s historian videos and I never would have thought he had a drop of interest in videos games, but he is the CEO of Rebellion. That’s awesome. More of this please.
It's really hard to not like this man. He just seems so pleasant and humble. I love SE as a series, keep up the amazing work.
You gotta be freakin’ kidding me. I’ve been watching this dude’s channel Modern History TV casually on and off for years and had NO IDEA he’s the head of Rebellion 🤯 That’s really awesome and I’ll never be able to watch one of your medieval videos the same way again😅
Such a kind man who truly knows his craft. That was one of the most enjoyable videos I've seen on RUclips in weeks. Thank you GameSpot.
3:14
"Most combat, if you can, you try and get the enemy between 10 o'clock and 3 'o'clock. That's going to be your strongest attack"
And that is why British Tea Time usually begins around 3:30.
Well that was wholesome af. Seriously recommended watching his channel, such a great guy that adds so much knowledge and quality into this world. When it seems especially dark, watching a man talk about medieval pub signs in a genuine and wholesome manner, really picks up your mood.
Warhammer Total War is one of his favorite games?! This dude is awesome. I’d watch an entire series of him talking about Warhammer Total war.
I can't believe I learned so much about cavalry tactics from a commentary on a warhammer game.
Jason Kingsley himself? Great catch for this series.
I could watch stuff like this for hours, Kingsley and Ferguson are both an absolute gem on youtube
The one sticking point for history buffs when it came to Kingdom Come: Deliverance was the (over)use of bows as early 1400s Bohemia was more of a crossbow country.
There were tons more historically wrong things than just that, I assure you
@@duchessskye4072 Like what?
@@blooperman1997 everything to do with the cumans, a fair bit of the armor, the fashion of the main lord characters such as Hanush or Radzig and Divish, the architecture isn't entirely correct to early 15th century bohemia. Etc etc.
IIRC crossbows were considered during development but they either couldn't get it working well or chose not to include them for gameplay reasons. A crossbow isn't as versitile as a bow,
Plus the overreliance on swords as opposed to the true harvester of men up until the mid-gunpowder era - the spear. First mod I used in KCD was one that let me pick up and use pole-arms.
I could listen to this man talk about historical video games all day :')
WW2 Rebuilder is easily the most unique game shown. It's a wonderful game with doing parts of the rebuilding and why they are helping. I really enjoy that combat free experience and learning about the characters and history.
Bannerlord and kingdom come deliverance are my faves on the list.
"You cannot swing through the horses head more than once" Words to live by.
I never knew he was the CEO of a gaming company I only see the occasional youtube video with him in it suggested
I'd like to think Jason Kingsley is like Hideo Kojima if Kojima ever pursued his passion of filmmaking in his free time
With how positive and amiable Jason is in this video, I now view Rebellion and their games in a new light. Such a chad👏👏👏
No way! I love Jason's channel, and this is such a dream collaboration! Thanks for the video, GameSpot!
So glad Bannerlord was covered
Haha after all these years of watching his videos I missed the part where he was CEO of Rebellion
Since Rebellion was mentioned, I might aswell as for a reaction to the guns from "Strange Brigade". There are a few I'd never even heard of before seeing them in there.
Big fan of Jason and it's doubly nice to get people that are genuinely passionate and having fun in these
Heck yes! I love that you're diversifying this series with excellent guests such as Jason.
10/10 video, would watch again.
This was a great video! You can really see his love and appreciation for history and obviously game design
10/10 for Jason, I was hooked from beginning to end
Knowing he his also the CEO of Rebellion, a legendary dev studio, just blew my mind! Great video! Hope there will be more ;)
great video! i love that he's also a game developer (and gamer) so he adds in that bit of practicality/understanding for the developer's perspective. in some of these style of videos the expert can be a little harsh on the devs!
This was a really fantastic video. Kingsley gave a really great perspective and was a joy to listen to.
I love this, hes both a gamer and a historian thats mad wicked
This guy is living my best life.
Spectacular video! Love to hear the insight of someone well versed in two subjects I dearly love.
Whoa! I'm a fan of his channel, never knew he has a dev studio, even a successful one!
Jason's Channel rules and I had no idea he is the CEO of Rebellion. Great to see him here. Please bring him back!
About time! Jason is a legend, all the way. His history channel on youtube is fantastic.
Great to see Jason getting more exposure and looking at some video games.
I've wanted to hear him talk about Kingdon Come Deliverance for a while.
Had no idea he was CEO of Rebellion lol. Dude literally owns Judge Dredd.
Marvellous. A gentleman and a scholar... as well as much, much more! 🎉
Great commentary. You can tell the passion and open mindedness. Cannot wait to see more.
This was awesome, I want Jason to come back.
I loved this! Definitely looking forward to more in this series, if he's up for it.
Rebellion is also the publisher of 2000Ad comics, judge dredd etc.....im glad this fella is incharge of such important IP.
I love watching sir Jason. Man is excited to review games, fair, and positive. But also knows his history and even game development.
An absolute pleasure to watch.
Very nice to see the Expert Reacts horizon broaden, well done, Dave
Jason is a really cool guy! i didn't know he was the CEO of Rebellion until i played SE5, which surprised me a lot!
So this is going to be a new series right? 😊
In the very least give us like... half a dozen please and thank you.
Aw man love his channel, I had no idea about his carreer irl
I love this kind of contents, keep it coming !!!
More Jason, this was great!
Fantastic video, thank you!
20:43 i think that the lord of the rings movie showed us this perfectly when that one old guy at helms deep couldnt hold his knocked arrow for long and accidentally shot too early.
So cool that Jason plays Warhammer 3!
Excellent idea, Dave!
Very nice to see Jason
I've been subscribed Modern History for a while - I had no idea he was the CEO of a video game company. 😯
He sounds like a good boss to work for so much love and passion for history
Awesome idea for a video. What a treat!
Great video! A nice compliment to Jonathan's firearm videos.
At the timestamp 21:12... MYFF. Move Your Feet. Very good advice, in melee combat!
Excellent commentary. Makes me realize just how much realism has been baked into KCD's game design.
Can we just appreciate the comment at 2:54 "You cannot swing through your horse's head ... more than once."
Excellent point about killing the peasantry leading to nobody being able to work the land, and interestingly the game takes place after the Plague, which meant there were far less peasants so they became more valuable.
I really only knew Jason through his channel!👍Great👍!!!
This guy looks like Denethor from LOTR
I love his channel!!! I never knew he was the CEO of a game company that made a few of my favorite games!!! This man is truly something to behold!
Now I *really* wanna see jonathan and jason do something together. other than a dope AAA game, that is
I remember watching a few of Jason's videos but I never knew he was Rebellion's CEO :O
This guys great. Never heard of him before but he knows his stuff AND he's dialed into what makes games fun. Awesome!
I have been a fan of this guy for so long and had no idea he had a game studio hahaha that is awesome
Wow, didn't know he was Rebellion CEO, I only knew him from his channel. Thats fuckln awasome.
Jason is always interesting to listen to
Great video I loved it
I’d love to see more from him and others in the industry.
Wow.. this is amaizing! I am a subscriber of his channel and have no clue that he was the CEO of Rebellion
Jason Kingsley is awesome. His book is great too
Please have him back soon
If you have some footage from the Manor Lords demo, please show it to him in the next one. Thanks!
Holding a bowstring is like holding on to the leash of a dog that’s caught the scent of a squirrel, trying to hold that dog in place for more than a couple minute would be incredibly tiring.
Man, Jason seems like such a down to earth guy. Would love to just sit down and talk to him, better yet, just listen
Those were old knights, CA then made them much heavier and they now just run through 1-2 infantry formations.
16:28 the bagpipes 😂😂😂😂
23:25 I would have liked to hear examples of the societies he had in mind when saying that. Also, those imperial knights mount griffins, that's why they move like cats.
Wow! I didn't know what to expect from an interview about historical video games, but this was facinating! Jason Kingsley (@RebellionJaskon) filled his analysis with loads of real historical facts. Great analysis of how history & historical weapons are manipulated to create effective game play. No way to take it all in with one watching. 😊
I really miss cavalry charging through infantry. Total War Warhammer looks ridicilously bad in that regard. They just stop at the first rank.
I remember in the old Mount and Blade days, playing Full Invasion 2, we used to do pretty epic cavalry charges, and you quickly learn to just keep going, keep moving, reform, and do it again.
In reality, multiple charges apparantly were quite rare. I remember reading about the Battle of Rossbach were Seydlitz managed the unheard of feat of regrouping and charging a SECOND time.
Best episode yet 👏 👌
Fully expected Jason to say "Ive experimented with chopping heads off..."
I would very much like to see Jason return to comment on more historical/high fantasy games. He displays a lot of practical understanding of the matters, and has a good approach to this type of commentary.
Frankly, I prefer him over Toby Capwell, who mostly seems to talk down to the games being displayed.
I have been watching Modern History for a while now and had no idea Jason was the CEO of Rebellion
